Distracted Driving

Kinds Of Distracted Driving

Texting involves all three kinds of distraction!

Kinds Of Distracted Driving

Manual
Distraction

AVOID:
Typing..
Dialing phone numbers..
Reaching for the phone..
Do not take your hands off the wheel.
Kinds Of Distracted Driving

Visual

Distraction

AVOID:
Looking at your phone..
or at the passenger next to you..

Do not look away from the road.

Kinds Of Distracted Driving

Mental
Distraction

AVOID:
Using voice-activated texting..
or talking on a hands-free phone..

Do not think about something other than the road.

Seat Belt
Research clearly indicates that the use of safety belts has a
significant effect in reducing the number of death and severity
of injuries resulting from traffic crashes.

World Health Organization Wearing a seat-belt reduces the risk

of a fatality among front-seat passengers by 40–50% and of
rear-seat passengers by between 25–75%.

So, Fasten your seatbelt all the time while you are driving or
riding the vehicle to protect yourself.
Seat Belt

ØA Seat belt is a first line of defense against serious injury or death,

which may result from a collision or a sudden stop.

ØIt reduces the probability of injuries and accidents by preventing the

seat belt wearers from hitting hard against interior elements or from
being thrown out of the vehicle.

ØNot wearing a seatbelt increases the chance of severe injury or

death
So Why Do People Not Wear Seatbelts?

“Seat belts are only for longer trips.” “Seat Belts mess up the clothes.”

“I’m driving for years never had an “Seat Belts are not for back seat
accident before.” passengers, occupants.”
• So what do you think are the three causes of
accidents world wide

????????????
TOP Causes of Car Accidents # 3

Driving Under the Influence (DUI) is the #3 leading cause of car accidents.
TOP Causes of Car Accidents # 3

Unlike most countries where DUI is ranked #3

cause of car accidents,

in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; It’s Unsafe Lane

Change, which is very common among
distracted drivers.
TOP Causes of Car Accidents # 2

Driving over the speed limit is the #2 leading cause of car accidents.

Driving over the speed limit contributes to 1/3 of all car accidents.
DISTRACTION WHILE DRIVING

TOP Causes of Car Accidents # 1

Distracted Driving
is the #1 leading cause of car accidents in the world.

Distracted Drivers are the main reason why in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia people loose
one family member every 40 minutes.

Also, they are the main reason why 39,000 inpatients are currently occupying more than 30% of
all hospital beds in Saudi Arabia
DISTRACTION WHILE DRIVING

Facts On Distracted Driving

#1 cause of driver distraction is the use of a cell phone.

It counts for 28% of all car accidents

Journey management Plan

When developing a journey management plan keep in mind

that the key objectives of the plan should be to eliminate
unnecessary trips, reduce driving distances, and minimize the
risks associated with necessary trips.
Your plan should aim to mitigate the following hazards:
Driver inexperience. Distracted driving behaviour.
Driver will not commence a journey without a journey
management plan (JMP) where required and will follow the
approved JMP.
Fatigue is one of the most obvious consequences of poor
journey planning and is a major contributing factor in road traffic
incidents. A good Journey Management Plan will take into
account all the factors that will minimise your chances of feeling
sleepy whilst driving.
Journey management Requirement
Journey Manager will ensure drivers are aware of the JMP
requirements and verify the compliance before authorizing the
journey.
Vehicles must meet the JMP requirement and drivers must
inspect the vehicles prior to departure
Journey management Requirement
1. Schedule your journey carefully to avoid night driving and
those times of day when falling asleep is most likely (2am –
6am)
2. Take into account road hazards and weather conditions
3. Adhere to the legal restrictions on driving times and
distances
4. Plan when and where to take rests
5. Allow for unexpected delays
6. Take plenty of drinks with you so that you stay hydrated
7. Know what to do in case of an emergency
8. Define your route
Journey management Requirement
9. Make sure you can stay in communication.
10. Plan your rest periods and locations.
11. Think about the timing of your journey and how busy roads will be.
12. Identify black spots/route hazardous spots.
13. Consider the route options – different types of roads.
14. Check the road and weather conditions.
15. Identify high risk locations such as schools.
16. Personal welfare – keep hydrated with non-caffeine drinks.
17. Time your journey and allow extra time to account of
unexpected delays.

“ CAUSES OF VEHICULAR ACCIDENTS”

Human error ( Carelessness, Lack of awareness,

Boredom, Disregard for traffic procedures, Distractions)
· Failure to obey traffic rules
· Over speeding
· Driving under the influence of drugs or
alcohol
· Poor vehicle maintenance
· Driving while suffering from illness or
fatigue
“ FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO ACCIDENTS”

· Drivers attitude
· Distraction
· Emotions
· Drugs & alcohol
· Health condition
PRE-START CHECKS

· fuel, water and oil levels;

· tyre tread depth and damage (including spares);
· the correct tyre inflation;

HANDLING OF CONTROLS & INSTRUMENTS

Before you start to use your

vehicle, it’s very important
that you familiarize with the
handling, controls and
instruments of the vehicle.
Refer to the manufacturers
manual to enhance your
knowledge.
UNSAFE LOADS

· insufficient restraints;

· overloading;

· being unevenly distributed; and

· failure of faulty or damaged ropes or restraints.

HAZARDS IN THE ROAD

· unsafe road conditions;

· bad weather;

· livestock;

· mechanical failures; and

· pedestrians or cyclists.
DRIVING SKILLS
· looking ahead and checking your mirrors regularly;

· driving within the speed limit;

· anticipating other drivers’ actions;

· complying with signs and road markings;

· keeping both hands on the wheel;

· keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead;

· driving at a consistent speed;

· indicating well in advance when you want to turn;

· overtaking only when you have clear visibility;

· driving in the left lane, unless overtaking; and

· showing courtesy and patience.

VEHICLE CONTROL

· avoid the edges of the road;

· avoid sudden braking;

· accelerate slowly on wet roads;

· drive slower on gravel roads and slow down on corners;

and

· lower your headlight beam in order to avoid blinding

oncoming drivers.
USE OF LIGHTS

ü lower your headlight beam in order to avoid blinding

oncoming drivers.
ü use your signal light in advance when you want to turn
ü use your hazard lights when ever you stop on the road
ü use your hazard light when reversing
ü lower your headlight & open your cabin light in check point
ü use your low beam during foggy condition, high beam lights
reflect off the moisture droplets in the fog, making it harder to
see
ü use your headlight & hazard lights during harsh weather
condition
CONSTRUCTION SITE VEHICLE & EQUIPMENT
DRIVING SAFETY
ü conduct a daily routine walk around to check
your vehicle & equipment every morning
ü no overtaking
ü maintain 15 to 40 kph speed limit as per instructed
ü obey safety & site traffic rules and regulation
ü do not use cell phone while driving or operating
ü no body is allowed to take break or nap
underneath any vehicle or equipment
ü no back riding
ü give way to pedestrian
ü do not maneuver near any excavation
ü always work with a spotter/flagman
ü when operating in congested area ensure to have a
spotter/flagman
ü secure your loads
ü park only in designated parking area

5 GOOD REASONS TO KEEP SIDE MIRRORS AT 90º
· You will not need to look over your shoulders (although this
is not a bad idea)
· You will only need to give the mirror(s) a quick look to spot
the blind area(s). (The former method takes too long to
look and return to the normal position, making you lose
sight of what is in front of you)
· Looking at the mirror(s) only keeps you focused on what is
in front of you
· You will have a better view, including blind areas
· At night, other vehicle’s headlights will not reflect on the
mirrors
GOOD VISIBILITY MEANS ZERO
ACCIDENTS

It will take you some time to get used
