FOREWORD

This Self-Learning Kit will serve as a guide in multiplying and


dividing simple fractions and mixed fractions. It will be your aid
as you learn new ideas and enrich your existing knowledge
about mathematical concepts.

In this learning kit, the pupils will also gain knowledge in


solving routine and non-routine problems involving
multiplication with or without addition or subtraction of fractions
and mixed fractions using appropriate problem-solving
strategies and tools correctly.

The following are the special and unique features of the Self-
Learning Kit:

that will allow them to apply what they have learned prior
to the discussion of the learning competency/ies.

B. What You Need To Know This is the part where the learning
competency/ies is/are being discussed.

C. What Have I Learned It aims to check the pupils


understanding of the learning competency in multiplying
simple fractions and mixed numbers.

Math is fun. We hope that this Self-Learning Kit will help our
dear pupils to enhance their mathematical skills that would
soon be applied in their everyday lives.

II. What I Need To Know

Multiplication of Fractions

Mother prepared a cake for her children. She wanted to get

of of the cake. So, she got of it and cut it into two equal

parts. Then, she got one part of it and gave it to her youngest
child.

Now, if we want to know the part of the whole cake given to the
youngest child, we use multiplication of fractions.

Whole or 6/6 2/6 or 1/3 1/2 of the 1/3 or 1/6

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and multiply the
denominators. The corresponding products are the terms of the
answer. In symbols,

Multiply both the numerators (1 x 1) to get 1 and both

denominators (2 x 3) to get 6 so, the answer is

It easier to obtain the product if common factors of the


fractions are cancelled out first. Cross-cancellation is a
shortcut that you can use to make multiplying fractions easier.

Here’s the systematic way to cross-cancel:
1. Find the prime factorization of both numerator and denominator
of both fractions.

2. Cancel any factors found both in numerator and denominator


as many copies as are present in the opposite direction.

3. Multiply all factors left on the top of both fractions to form the
numerator of the answer. Multiply all factors at the bottom of

To multiply a whole number and a fraction, consider a


whole number as a fraction whose denominator is 1. Then,
perform the multiplication.

DISCUSSION:

To multiply a fraction in mixed form by a fraction in simplest form


first change the mixed form to improper fraction. Multiply the
numerators, then the denominators. Write the product of the
numerators over the product of the denominators. Simplify the
product.
To multiply mixed forms:
1. Change both factors to improper fractions.
2. Multiply the numerators. Write the product over the
product over the product of the denominators.
3. Change the product to simplest form when
necessary.
Use the four- step plan as guide in problem solving:
a. Explore- Understand the problem. List down all the
information given in the problem. You need to know also
what is asked in the problem.
b. Plan-After understanding the problem develop a plan to
solve it .Determine the operation to use. Form the equation.
c. Solve-Carry out the plan. Use the operation to solve the
problem.
d. Examine-Look at the answer and check whether it answers

Division of Fractions

Jenny bought 10 meters of blue ribbon which she will use to tie

To know how many smaller ropes can be made, here is the

Step 1 Change the mixed numbers to improper fraction/s.
(To change mixed number to improper fraction,
multiply the denominator by the whole number then
add the product to the numerator. Let the sum be the
numerator and copy the denominator.

DIVIDING FRACTION BY ANOTHER FRACTION

To divide a fraction by another fraction, multiply the dividend


by the reciprocal of the divisor.

When we divide mixed numbers, change them to


improper fractions and then use the most appropriate rule to
