1 Laws on Radicals

We have encountered the expression 𝑎𝑛 , where the exponent 𝑛 is any

integer, positive, negative, or zero. What if, in 𝑎𝑛 , 𝑛 is a rational number like
1 2 1
, 3, and 4? How do we handle expressions with rational exponents such as
2
1 3 2
𝑎2 , 𝑎5 , and 𝑎3 ?

What’s In
𝑚
𝑛
Rational exponent can be written as 𝑎 𝑛 = √𝑎𝑚 . Take a look at the
following illustrations:
1
𝑎2 = √𝑎 If no index appears in the radical expression,
it is understood that the index is 2.
3
5
𝑎5 = √𝑎3 The index is 5 and the radicand is 𝑎3 .

Activity: Transform it!

Change the following given below into radical form or exponential form. Write
your answer on separate sheet/s of paper.

Exponential Form Radical Form

2
What’s New

Recall that squaring a number means multiplying that number by itself.

For example,
112 = 11 ∙ 11 = 121
The inverse operation of squaring a number is finding its square root.
To find the square root of 121, we look for two equal factors whose product is
121. The square root of a non negative number is one of two identical factors
of the number.
Since 11 ∙ 11 = 121, one square root of 121 is 11.

What is It!

The laws on radicals are derived directly from the laws on exponents.
These will help us to simplify the radicals much easier. Look and study the
following laws on radicals, assume that when n is even, 𝒂 > 𝟎.

𝒏 𝒏
