For the facilitator:

Welcome to the MATHEMATICS 9 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on

Triangle Trigonometry!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

 Illustrate angles of elevation
 Illustrate angles of depression

Lesson Illustrating angles of
1 elevation and angles of
depression

What’s In

Direction: Give the measure of the other acute angle of right triangle ACB.
1. A = 450

2. B = 250

3. A = 190

4. B = 620

5. A = 24010’

What’s New

Direction: Do what is asked in the activity below.

A. You have used right triangles to determine some important

relationships in the previous lessons. Today you are going to do an
outdoor activity. You will use these ratios to determine the height of
an object outside. Follow the steps below.
1. Pick one family member in your household.
Write the name of the family member you are measuring.
2. Measure the length of that person’s shadow.
3. Using the appropriate trigonometric ratios, find the angle of elevation.
Sketch the picture.
4. Find the length of the shadow of the object you have chosen.

3
5. Using the angle of elevation and the shadow length, find the height of
the object.
6. Sketch a picture of the object, its shadow, and the angle of elevation.

Process Questions:

1. How did you find the activity?

2. What have you learned in the activity?

3. What is/are the new term/s you have encountered in the activity?

What is It

Definitions:
Line of sight is an imaginary line that connects the eye of an observer to the
object being observed.

The angle of elevation is the angle from the horizontal to the line of sight of the
observer to the object above.

The angle of depression is the angle from the horizontal to the line of sight of
the observer to the object below.

A. When a person looks at above his/her location, the angle between the
line of sight and the horizontal is called the angle of elevation. In
this case, the line of sight is “elevated” above the horizontal.
OBJECT

Line of sight above observer

Angle of elevation

OBSERVER’S EYE Horizontal line of sight

4
B. When a person looks at something below his or her location, the angle
between the line of sight and the horizontal is called the angle of
depression. In this case, the line of sight is “depressed” below the
horizontal.

OBSERVER’S EYE Horizontal line of sight

Angle of depression

Line of sight below observer

OBJECT

EXAMPLE:

1. A hiker is 400 meters away from the base of the radio tower. The angle of
elevation to the top of the tower is 460. How high is the tower?

SOLUTION:

a. Draw the triangle

460
400m
b. Use the tangent ratio
𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒆
𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝜽 =
𝒂𝒅𝒋𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕
𝑥
tan 46° =
400
𝟒𝟎𝟎(𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝟒𝟔°) = 𝒙
𝐱 = 𝟒𝟎𝟎(𝐭𝐚𝐧𝟒𝟔°)
x = 400(1.04)
𝐱 = 𝟒𝟏𝟔 𝒎
𝐒𝐨, the tower is 416 meters high.

5
2. As Ariel stands on a bridge which is 100 ft above the water, he is
looking at the coming barge. The angle of depression of the front of the
barge is 35° and the angle of depression of the rear of the barge is
25°.How long is the barge?

B
25°
35°
 B
B

A
C a D b

Solution:
The picture that illustrates the given facts in the problem is shown
above. The measure of a and b can easily be computed.

We have
=90°-35°=55°
β=90°-25°=65°
To find the length of the barge, we solve the first for AC by using the
right triangle ABC and the solve for a by using the right triangle DBC.
We use the definition of the tangent function in solving for both. We
have
𝐴𝐶
tan β=𝐵𝐶

𝐴𝐶
tan 65°=100

AC=100 tan 65°

AC= 214.45 ft. Hence, the length b of the barge is
𝑎
tan  = B = AC – a
𝐵𝐶
tan 55°=
𝑎
= 214.45-142.81
100
B = 71.64 ft.
a=100 tan 55°
a=142.81ft.

6
What’s More

Directions: Do the following:

a. Draw/illustrate the pictures presented by the information in the

problems given.

b. Assume that buildings, ladders, tec. Are all the level ground.
c. Clear, neat, and accurate illustrations are necessary.

1. The angle of elevation of the top of the building from a point 30 meters
away from the building is 650

2. The angle of depression of a boy form a point on a light house 30.5

meters above the surface of the water is 30

3. If an airplane that is cruising at an altitude of 9km wants to land at

Mactan airport, it must begin its descent so that the angle of
depression to the airport is 70

4. A bird sits on top of a 5 – meter lamppost. The angle of depression

from the bird to the feet of an observer standing away from the
lamppost is 350

Trigonometry gained considerable enthusiasm from the learners

during the late 16th and early 17th century. In this period, the name
“trigonometry” came to be attached to the subject. It was used as the
title of one article of Bartholomaeus Pitiscus (1561 – 1613) which was
published in 1595.

7
