Imagine what would the roads be like if all the drivers do not have the
knowledge about speed, distance, and time? Imagine a race wherein the organizers,
the players and the people around do not have the knowledge about speed, distance,
and time? Knowing little or nothing about the Mathematical knowledge, skills, and
the use of it in our daily lives bring chaos.

Through this module, you will find out how to calculate speed, distance, and
time. One of the essential skills we need to understand and apply in our daily life.

To fully comprehend this lesson, you need to recall first the basic operations
the necessary skills needed to get accurate measurement of speed, distance, and
time.

3
Notes to the Teacher
Now is the time for you to guide your learners to find out the
easy way of calculating for speed, distance, and time.
As a teacher, it is your task to help them develop their
problem-solving ability. This skill may apply in
real-life situation.

What’s New

Due to the New Normal situation brought by the pandemic, we commonly hear
the words social distancing or physical distancing. This means we keep a distance of
at least 1 meter from each other and avoid spending time in crowded places or in
group, aside from wearing face mask, face shield and washing hands, the minimum
safety protocol standards imposed by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to limit the
speed of spread of covid-19 transmission.
The units of measurement of distance are kilometer (km), meter (m),
centimeter (cm), millimeter (mm).
The units of measurement of time are hour (h), minute (min), second (sec).
The units of measurement of speed are kilometer per hour (km/h), minute
per second (min/sec), centimeter per second (cm/sec), millimeter per second
(mm/sec).

4
What is It

Filipinos are fond of traveling out of town and out of the country but for the
meantime, let us enjoy our home-life and recall the places we have traveled before
this pandemic.

What is the most faraway place you have been to? Do you know how far is it?
How long did you travel? Do you know the speed at which your vehicle traveled?
Have you noticed that when the speed of the vehicle is faster, the time it takes to
reach a place is lessened?

Speedometer

Speedometer or speed meter is an instrument on a vehicle’s dashboard indicating

its speed.

Let’s have the meaning of speed, distance, and time.

Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast an object is moving”. Speed
can be thought of as rate by which an object covers distance.
Example 55 km/h

Distance is the total length between two positions.

Example (Distance of Bulacan to Baguio) kilometers

Time is the quantity measured or measurable period during which an action,

process, or condition exists or continues.
Example 4 hours

5
Now, let’s try to calculate speed, distance, and time. Read the situation below.

We had a family vacation in Baguio. My father drove our van from City of
Malolos to Baguio City at an average speed of 55 kilometers per hour, for a total of 4
hours. How far did we travel?

Let’s analyze the problem. In this problem, we were asked about the distance
they traveled. Given information, speed of 55 kilometers per hour and time of 4
hours.

• To find the total distance traveled, we simply multiply the given speed and
time.
Distance = speed x time
= 55 x 4
= 220 km
Answer : We traveled 220 kilometers

An easy way to remember the formula for speed (S), distance (D), and time (T)
is by using a magic triangle. D (distance) goes in the top of the triangle, S (speed)
goes in the bottom left of the triangle and T (time) goes in the bottom right of the
triangle as shown below.

S T
x

6
Distance

Cover with your fingers the shaded part of the

triangle. What letters can you see? Letters S and T
D are next to each other it means multiplication. So,
S T we can say that the formula for calculating distance
is D = S x T

Example 2
Calculate the distance that you will travel if you will drive for 3.5 hours at
75 km/h.

D = SxT
= 75 km/h x 3.5 h
Distance = 262.5 km.
Answer : You will travel a distance of 262.5 kilometers.

Speed
Cover with your fingers the shaded part. What
letters can you see? Since D is over T so it means
D division, we can derive the formula of speed as

S T 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝐷
Speed = or S=
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑇
Example 3
A car travels 120 km in 2 hours; find the speed of the car.
S = 𝐷
𝑇
= 120 𝑘𝑚
2 ℎ

Speed = 60 km/h
Answer : The car travels 60km/h.

Example 4
Find the speed when, distance is 304 km and time is 4 hours.
S = 𝐷
𝑇
= 304 𝑘𝑚
4 ℎ
Speed = 76 km/h
Answer : The speed is 76 km/h.

7
Example 5
Samuel can type 975 words in 25 minutes. Calculate his typing speed in:
A. words per minute B. words per hour

His typing speed can be calculated as:

975
A. Typing Speed = = 39 words per minute
25

B. In 1 hour we have 60 minutes, so:

Typing Speed = 39 x 60 = 2,340 words per hour.

Time
Now, cover with your fingers the shaded part. What
letters can you see? D is over S, so we can derive
D the formula for time as distance divided by speed.
𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝐷
Time = or T=
S T 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑆

Example 5

A bus traveled 252 kilometers at 72 km/h. How long does it travel?

T = 𝐷
𝑆
= 252 𝑘𝑚
72 𝑘𝑚/ℎ

Time = 3.5 hours

Answer : The bus traveled for 3.5 hours.

Example 6

How long does it take to travel 180 kilometers at 45 km/h?

T = 𝐷
𝑆
= 180 𝑘𝑚
45 𝑘𝑚/ℎ

Time = 4 hours

Answer : It takes 4 hours to travel 180km.

12
What is It

For instance, you are given multiple distances in different amounts of time. What
will you do? In this case we will use the formula for Average Speed.
What is average speed?

Average Speed is a measure of the distance traveled in a specific amount of time.

An average speed does not tell your fastest speed or slowest speed. It shows that for
a certain amount of time, you covered a specific distance.

Why is the term average speed used? Imagine a journey, the speed may change from
time to time – start from rest, speed up, and travel the same speed throughout. In
this case, finding the average speed turn out to be important to have an estimate of
the rate of journey completed.

The formula for average speed is

𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑑

Average Speed =
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

Before you use the formula remember the following

➢ Check what information you are given. Determine the multiple distances that
were traveled, the amount of time it took to travel each of those distances.
➢ Set the formula. For average speed remember that D stands for total distance
traveled and T stands total time spent to cover the distance.
➢ Determine the total distance and determine the total time.
➢ Using the formula, divide total distance traveled by total time.

Let’s analyze and solve the problem stated above.

Paolo drove for 2 hours at rate of 70 kilometers per hour and 3 hours at 60 kilometers
per hour.

13
2 hours x 70 kilometers = 140
3 hours x 60 kilometers = 180
total distance = 140 + 180 = 320 kilometers
total time = 2 + 3 = 5
Using the formula

𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑑

Average Speed =
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
= 320 𝑘𝑚
5 ℎ
Average Speed = 64 km per hour

Answer : The average speed is 64 km per hour.

Important Note: Do not add the two speeds then divide the answer
by 2 you will get the wrong answer.

The following table lists the units commonly used for speed and their
abbreviation.

Distance Time Speed Abbreviation

miles hours miles per hour mph
kilometers hours kilometers per hour km/h or kph
meters seconds meters per second m/s
feet seconds feet per second ft. per sec.
centimeters seconds centimeters per second cm/sec or cm/s

Conversion

1000 m = 1 km
1
1m = km
1000
1 hr = 60 min
1 min = 60 sec
1 hr = 3600 sec

1
1 sec = hr
3600

Speed can be expressed in terms of smaller units like meter per minute, or
meter per second.

at 70 km/h and then 2 hours at 65 km/h before it finally reached Cauayan, Isabela.
What is its average speed?

Formula for distance is

Distance = speed x time
Total Distance = (70 x 3.5) + (65 x 2 )= 375 km
Total time = 3.5 + 2 = 5.5 h
Using the formula
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑑
