HOW MUCH…? / HOW MANY…?

We use How much…? with uncountable nouns and How many…? with countable nouns.
How much free time do you have? How many dogs do your parents have?
¿Cuánto tiempo libres tienes? ¿Cuántos perros tienen tus padres?

A LOT OF – LOTS OF

Countable and uncountable nouns. It means “muchos/as”.


I have a lot of friends. My sister eats a lot of sugar.
Yo tengo muchos amigos. Mi hermana toma mucho azúcar.

Can be used in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences but mainly in affirmative.
Much and many are more used in negative and questions.

MANY

Countable nouns. Used in affirmative, negative and questions.


He doesn’t know many words.
El no conoce muchas palabras.
MUCH
Uncountable nouns. Used in negative and questions.
He doesn’t have much money.
Él no tiene mucho dinero.

TOO MANY
Countable nouns. It means “demasiados/as”
There are too many animals at the zoo.

TOO MUCH
Uncountable nouns. It means “demasiado/a”
This cake has too much sugar.

SO MANY
Countable nouns. It means “tantos/as”
She had so many problems that she didn’t know what to do.
Ella tenía tantos problemas que no sabía qué hacer.

SO MUCH
Uncountable nouns. It means “tanto/a”
He has so much money!
¡Tiene tanto dinero!

TOO + ADJECTIVE
It means “demasiado/a”
Today it’s too cold.

Uncountable nouns. It means “un poco/algo de”
She saves a little money every month.
Ella ahorra un poco de dinero cada mes.

LITTLE
Uncountable nouns. It means “poco/poca de, casi nada de”. It has a negative meaning.
They have little money to spend.
Tienen poco dinero para gastar.

A FEW
Countable nouns. It means “unos cuantos/unas cuantas, unos pocos/unas pocas”
We stayed a few days in Florence and visited the museums.
Nosotros estuvimos unos cuantos días en Florencia y visitamos los museos.

FEW
Countable nouns. It means “pocos/pocas”. It has a negative meaning.
We stayed few days in Rome. We didn’t visit all the monuments we wanted.

SOME
Countable and uncountable nouns. Used in affirmative sentences.
He’s got some homework.
Él tiene algo de deberes.

It can also be used in questions when we offer something or when we know the answer is going
to be “Yes”.
Do you want some tea? Do you need some help?
¿Quieres un poco de té? ¿Necesitas algo de ayuda?

ANY
Countable and uncountable nouns. Used in negative and questions.
Has he got any homework? No, he hasn’t got any homework.
¿Tiene él algo de deberes? No, el no tiene nada de deberes.
