E3 HOUSEHOLD BALANCE SHEETS – DISTRIBUTION
Data in this table were extracted from HILDA Release 18.0 (unconfidentialised data set), Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and
Social Research, which provides unit record responses from around 9 000 households. Wealth and income data in this article are based
actual responses, or imputed responses if answers were missing. Data are weighted to be representative of the population as a whole. T
enable comparison across time, an adjustment was also made for the change in purchasing power between periods by converting the
values in earlier surveys to September 2018 dollars using the consumer price index. Household characteristics such as age, education a
labour force status are based on the household reference person, who was chosen from household members as the person with the
highest income, highest salary, labour force status, age and respondent number, in that order.
Household are only recorded as having assets or debt of a particular type if they had a positive balance in the asset or debt. Thus a
number of households with bank accounts, credit cards or business assets or debt with zero balances were excluded from the group of
households possessing these assets or debts. Results which are based on less than 0.2 per cent of the sample are not reported.
Note that additional households have been included in the sample from HILDA Release 11.0 onwards. While this change has improved t
coverage of the survey, it makes it difficult to compare the cross-sectional results from 2014 onwards with the results published for previo
years (or wealth modules). For more information on the top-up sample, see:
