D330, D333, 3304, 3306 INDUSTRIAL & MARINE ENGINES Caterpillar

Cylinder Head

Remove Cylinder Head (D330C, D333C, 3304 & 3306 Industrial Engines)

start by:

a) remove valve cover

b) remove rocker shaft assembly and push rods

1. Remove the oil pressure gauge line.

2. Remove bolt and clip (3). Remove sensing line (5) for water temperature gauge.
Remove bolt and clip (2). Remove ammeter gauge wire (1). Remove bolts (4).

3. Remove fuel injection lines. Put caps on lines and pump openings. Disconnect
turbocharger oil supply and drain lines.

4. Remove cylinder head bolts (6).

5. Fasten a hoist to the cylinder head and remove it from the cylinder block.
Weight of the assembly is 360 lb. (163 kg).

Install Cylinder Head (D330C, D333C, 3304 & 3306 Industrial Engines)

1. Clean sealing surfaces of the cylinder head and block. Install a new gasket on
the cylinder block and install the cylinder head.

2. Install the rocker shaft assembly and push rods.

SIX CYLINDER ENGINES

FOUR CYLINDER ENGINES

3. Put 9M3710Anti-Seize Compound on threads of the cylinder head bolts. Install the
bolts and washers and tighten the bolts in the following sequence:

1 - Tighten all bolts with numbers in order to 115 lb.ft. (15.9 mkg).

2 - Tighten all bolts with numbers again in order to a torque of 175 ± 5 lb.ft.
(24.2 ± 0.7 mkg).

3 - Last, tighten all bolts (hand torque only) with numbers again in order to a
torque of 175 ± 5 lb.ft. (24.2 ± 0.7 mkg).

4 - Tighten all bolts with letters in order to a torque of 22 lb.ft. (3.0 mkg).
5 - Tighten all bolts with letters again in order to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.4
± 0.7 mkg).

6 - Last, tighten all bolts (hand torque only) with letters again in order to a
torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.4 ± 0.7 mkg).

4. Make an adjustment of the inlet valves to get a clearance of .015 (0.38 mm) and
exhaust valves to get a clearance of .025 in. (0.64 mm).

5. Connect turbocharger oil supply and drain lines. Remove caps from fuel injection
lines and pump openings. Install fuel injection lines. Tighten nuts to a torque of
30 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.1 ± 0.7 mkg).

6. Install bolt and clip that hold ammeter gauge wire. Install bolt and clip that
hold water temperature sensing line.

7. Install oil pressure gauge line.

end by:

a) install valve cover

Remove Cylinder Head (D330C, D333C, 3304 & 3306 Marine Engines)

start by:

a) remove expansion tank and heat exchanger

b) remove valve cover

c) remove rocker shaft assembly and push rods

1. Remove bolts (1) that hold turbocharger oil supply line.

2. Remove bolts (6) that hold turbocharger oil drain line.

3. Remove bolts (4) and nuts and remove shield (2).

4. Remove turbocharger oil supply line (3) and oil drain line (5).

5. Remove bolts (7) that hold elbow (8) to cylinder head. Loosen clamp (9) and
remove elbow (8).

6. Disconnect the sensing line (11) for the fuel ratio control.

7. Remove the fuel injection lines (10) and put covers on all fuel openings.

8. Remove the lifting eye (12) from the rear of the engine.

9. Remove the remainder of the bolts that hold the cylinder head to the cylinder
block.

10. Install one 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolt and fasten a hoist and a strap. Remove
the cylinder head. Weight of the assembly is 400 lb. (181 kg).

Install Cylinder Head (D330C, D333C, 3304 & 3306 Marine Engines)

1. Install a new and dry cylinder head gasket.


2. Fasten a hoist to the cylinder head and put it in position on the engine.
Install the rocker shaft assembly and push rods.

3. Put 9M3710Anti-Seize Compound on threads of cylinder head bolts. Install the


bolts and washers and tighten the bolts in the following sequence:

1 - Tighten all bolts with numbers in order to 115 lb.ft. (15.9 mkg).

2 - Tighten all bolts with numbers again in order to a torque of 175 ± 5 lb.ft.
(24.2 ± 0.7 mkg).

3 - Last, tighten all bolts (hand torque only) with numbers again in order to a
torque of 175 ± 5 lb.ft. (24.2 ± 0.7 mkg).

4 - Tighten all bolts with letters in order to a torque of 22 lb.ft. (3.0 mkg).

5 - Tighten all bolts with letters again in order to a torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.4
± 0.7 mkg).

6 - Last, tighten all bolts (hand torque only) with letters again in order to a
torque of 32 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.4 ± 0.7 mkg).

4. Make an adjustment of the inlet valves to get a clearance of .015 (0.38 mm) and
exhaust valves to get a clearance of .025 in. (0.64 mm).

5. Install the lifting eye in the rear of the cylinder head.

6. Remove covers from all fuel openings and install fuel injection lines (1).
Tighten nuts to a torque of 30 ± 5 lb.ft. (4.1 ± 0.7 mkg).

7. Connect the sensing line (2) for the fuel ratio control.

8. Install water elbow and install the bolts that hold it. Tighten hose clamp.

9. Install the turbocharger oil supply and oil drain lines.

10. Install turbocharger shield (3) and the bolts and nuts (4) that hold it.

11. Install the bolts (6) that hold the turbocharger oil drain line.

12. Install the bolts (5) that hold the turbocharger oil supply line.

end by:

a) install valve cover

b) install expansion tank and heat exchanger
