Changes in care giving roles
Fathers used to act as the ‘breadwinner' of their family, and as the teacher of moral and religious values. Today,
however, those roles are gradually changing.
Changes in economic roles
More and more women are going out to work and earn money. This increases the budget of the family. Apart from
that, there are various social welfare programmes which financially assist mothers in supporting their children. Both
these changes have greatly impacted the role of fathers because they make paternal financial support less essential for
many families.
Changes in caregiving roles
With the burden of financial support reduced, and with a changing concept of a father's role, modern day fathers
tend to be more involved in children's caregiving. They are now spending more time and energy on their children.
Psychological research across families from all ethnic backgrounds suggests that the influence of a father's love and
attention is as great as that of a mother's. Fatherly love helps children develop a sense of their place in the world,
which helps their social and emotional development. Moreover, children who receive more love from their fathers are
less likely to have behavioural problems.
This trend is still increasing and its effects will become clearer and clearer in the future, especially in traditionally
male-dominated societies.

these animals with the promise of rewards. Even after the threat of tigers on livestock was over, man
continued to hunt tigers, this time for recreation. Poachers too hunt tigers for their body parts knowing that
the skin of tigers is much sought after. Bones and other organs are also used as ingredients in traditional

I was horrified when I found out that my 12-year-old daughter had been arrested for stealing some make-
up from a high street chemist’s. This happened because she had been dared by some older children from her
school. She was so frightened that she started crying –which is what attracted the attention of the shop
assistant. The police were called and she was given a tell-off at the police station.
Since this terrifying experience, she has been too afraid to go out on her own and cries all the time. My
husband doesn’t seem to care that much. He says that she shouldn’t have stolen in the first place and was

Yours sincerely,

Solar energy is a long lasting source of energy which can be used almost anywhere. To generate solar
energy, we only need solar cells and the sun! Solar cells can easily be installed on house roofs, so no new
space is needed and each user can quietly generate their own energy. Compared to other renewable sources,
they also possess many advantages. Wind and water power rely on turbines which are noisy, expensive and
easy to break down. Solar cells are totally silent and non-polluting. As they have no moving parts, they
require little maintenance and have a long lifetime.
However, solar energy also has some disadvantages. We can only generate solar energy during daytime
because the system depends on sunlight. Besides, solar cells require large area to work effectively. The main
disadvantage of solar energy is that it costs about twice as much as traditional sources such as coal, oil, and

One of the most urgent environment problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water.
Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. But acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage
have made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes and even entire seas have become large pools
of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of largest lake in the world. It contains a rich variety of
animals and plants, including 1, 300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in the world. But
they are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial pollutants which pour into the lake

foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the
inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for
awarding prizes to people who had made worldwide contributions to mankind. Originally there
were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine and peace. Economics was added in 1968,
just sixty-seven years after the first awarded ceremony.

To do well at school, college or university you usually need to do well in exams. “All students hate exams” may be a
generalization, but it is fairly true one. Certainly, all of the students I’ve known disliked doing exams, None of them
thought that the exam system was fair; to do well in a exam you simply had to be able to predict the questions which
would be asked, This was the case as regards tow students in my class at college. Both of them were exceptionally
bright, but in the final year “exam” neither of them got an a grade. In fact, they both got Cs. The exam had tested us on
questions which had come up the previous year. They had both assumed that the same questions wouldn’t come up

Fish that live on the sea bottom benefit by being flat and hugging the contours. There are two very different
types of flatfish and they have evolved in very separate ways. The skates and rays, relatives of the sharks have
become flat in what might be called the obvious way. Their bodies have grown out sideways to form great
“wings” They look as though they have been flattened but have remained symmetrical and “the right way up”.
Conversely fish such as plaice, sole, and halibut have become flat in a different way. There are bony fish which
have a marked tendency to be flattened in a vertical direction; they are much “taller” than they are wide. They
use their whole vertically flattened bodies as swimming surfaces, which undulate through the water as they
move. Therefore when * their ancestors migrated to the seabed, they lay on one side than on their bellies.
However, this raises the problem that one eye was always looking down into the sand and was effectively
useless - In evolution this problem was solved by the lower eye “moving” around the other side. We see this
process of moving around enacted in the development of every young bony flatfish. It starts life swimming near
the surface, and is symmetrical and vertically flattened, but then the skull starts to grow in a strange
asymmetrical twisted fashion, so that one eye for instance the left, moves over the top of the head upwards, an
72
old Picasso - like vision. Incidentally, some species of 20 flatfish settle on the right side, others on the left, and
others on either side.

The main
disadvantage of solar energy is that it costs about twice as much as traditional sources such as coal, oil, and
gas. This is because solar cells are expensive. Scientists are hoping that the costs of solar cells will reduce as
more and more people see the benefits of this environmentally friendly source of energy.

A Mission to Mars
Have you ever had a dream about traveling to another planet in our solar system? If you have, there is
an actual programme that is happening right now, and it hopes to send people to Mars in 2023. Known as the
Mars One Mission, it will send a crew of four people on a one-way mission to colonize Mars. Those chosen
people will have to be ready to say good-bye to the earth forever, as there will not be a return trip.
For the people chosen, they will have to learn to do many different things. First of all, they will be
living the rest of their lives with just a handful of other people, so they all must have personalities that allow
them to get along. Second, the living quarters that they will have won’t be very spacious, so they will have to
deal with that condition as well. If they feel homesick, they will only be able to communicate with people back
75
on the earth via e-mail and videos and audio sent back and forth. However, there won’t be any real-time
communication. Even at the speed of light, communication between the earth and Mars takes about 20 minutes.
Whether the Mars One Mission will actually happen is the big question that a lot of people are asking.
There is an enormous skepticism in the science community, and Wired magazine gave the mission a miserable
score of two out of ten on its probability scale. However, for those who dream to go to Mars, at least they can
say there is a possibility that it could happen.

Many people continue to skip breakfast despite its being the most important meal of the day. Busy
people often rush out the doors in the mornings without giving their body the fuel they need to handle a long
day at work. They end up feeling tired by the afternoon and resort to the office snack machines or biscuits
tin. Loysa Hourigan, from Nutrition Australia, said that catching up food at lunchtime did not provide the
body with enough sustenance to keep it going for the rest of the day. “Even if you have had lunch, you
won’t have as much food as you need. Your brain get depleted of glucose and you feel tired,” Ms Hourigan
said.

Science is a very important indicator of the future. Every scientific advance or discovery gives us a clue
about what the future will hold for society. Perhaps the most amazing scientific discovery in recent times
was the birth of Dolly the sheep. Dolly was the first successful cloned animal – that is, she was the first
animal ever to be created from a single adult cell. She is an exact copy of her biological mother. Since
Dolly’s birth, there has been debate about what this means for society in the future – because if we can clone
sheep, we can surely clone humans. Some think that there are already signs that such things will eventually
happen. For example, couples in the United States who can’t or don’t want to have children by natural
methods can now select the human egg and sperm they want through catalogues, audiotapes or even
computer order systems. One journalist has commented, “Ordering a frozen embryo is a little more
emotionally complicated than ordering a home-delivered pizza – but not so different logistically.” (Hewitt
1998)
Question 36: According to this passage, future changes in society are .
A. unexpected B. amazing C. complicated D. predictable
Question 37: What do some people think is a sign of the future cloning of humans?

Along with jogging and swimming, cycling is one of the best all-round forms of exercise. It can help to
increase your strength and energy, giving you more efficient muscles and a stronger heart. But increasing
your strength is not the only advantage of cycling. Because you’re not carrying the weight of your body on
your feet, it’s a good form of exercise for people with painful feet or backs. However, with all forms of
exercise it’s important to start slowly and build up gently. Doing too much too quickly can damage muscles
that aren’t used to working. If you have any doubts about taking up cycling for health reasons, talk to your
doctor and ask for his/her advice.
Ideally you should be cycling at least two or three times a week. For the exercise to be doing you good,
you should get a little out of breath. Don’t worry that if you begin to lose your breath, it could be dangerous
and there must be something wrong with your heart. This is simply not true; shortness of breath shows that
the exercise is having the right effect. However, if you find you are in pain then you should stop and take a
rest.

A. it enables them to carry the weight of their body on their feet

Unlike life in the countryside, which is often considered to be simple and traditional, life in the city is
modern and complicated. People from different regions move to cities in the hope of having a better life for
themselves and their children. With plenty of job opportunities available in the city, the inhabitants work as
secretaries, businessmen, teachers, government officials, factory workers, street vendors or construction
workers and so on.
The high cost of living requires city dwellers, especially those with low income, to work harder or to
take part-time jobs. For many people, daily life typically involves getting up in the early morning to do
exercise in public parks, preparing for a hard day of working and studying, then travelling along crowded
boulevards or narrow streets filled with motor scooters and returning home late at night. They usually live in
large houses, high-rise apartment blocks or even in small rental rooms equipped with modern facilities, like
the Internet, telephone, television, and so on. Industrialization and modernization, as well as global

THE BEATLES
In the 1960s, The Beatles were probably the most famous pop group in the whole world. Since then,
there have been a great many groups that have achieved enormous fame, so it is perhaps difficult now to
imagine how sensational The Beatles were at that time. They were four boys from the North of England and
none of them had any training in music. They started by performing and recording songs by black
Americans and they had some success with these songs. Then they started writing their own songs and that
was when they became really popular. The Beatles changed pop music. They were the first pop group to
achieve great success from songs they had written themselves. After that it became common for groups and
singers to write their own songs. The Beatles did not have a long career. Their first hit record was in 1963
and they split up in 1970. They stopped doing live performances in 1966 because it had become too
dangerous for them – their fans were so excited that they surrounded them and tried to take their clothes as
souvenirs! However, today some of their songs remain as famous as they were when they first came out.

At the age of sixty-five, Laura Ingalls Wilder began writing a series of novels for young people
based on her early experiences on the American frontier. Born in the state of Wiscosin in 1867, she and her
family were rugged pioneers. Seeking better farm land, they went by covered wagon to Missouri in 1869,
then on to Kansas the next year, returning to Wisconsin in 1871, and traveling on to Minnesota and Lowa
before settling permanently in South Dakota in 1879. Because of this continuing moving, Wilder's early

attended school more regularly although she never graduated.
At the age of eighteen, she married Almanzo James Wilder. They bought a small farm in the Ozarks, where
they remained for the rest of their lives. Their only daughter, Rose, who had become a nationally known
journalist, encouraged her mother to write. Serving as agent and editor, Rose negotiated with Harper's to
publish her mother's first book, Little House on the Big Woods. Seven more books followed, each
chronicling her early life on the plains. Written from the perspective of a child, they have remained popular
with young readers from many nations. Twenty years after her death in 1957, more than 20 million copies

Although computers are considered the most perfect and effective devices in our modern time, we cannot
avoid certain problems when we are working on a computer. Letters and phone conversations are private. It
is against the law to open someone’s mail without permission or to listen secretly to someone's telephone
conversation. And now there are laws to protect the privacy of e-mail. It is also against the law to read the
messages that a person sends or receives on a computer. Although each person has a secret password for his
or her e-mail, sometimes the passwords are discovered by hackers, and the mailbox is opened.
Recently several companies that do business on the Internet have been attacked. The attackers sent huge
amounts of useless e-mails to the Web sites of these companies. The effect was to slow or stop the ability of
the companies to do their business. Such actions are known as “denial of service” attacks. The companies
say they may have lost millions of dollars because they were not able to provide goods and services during
the attacks. Most of the companies were able to solve the problem in about three hours. The victims of the
attacks included some of the largest and most successful companies on the Internet, such as Yahoo,
Amazon, Com, and E-Trade. The police have investigated the attackers. The computer industry leaders

Most people would say they know what stress is, but for scientists who study stress, it has been
surprisingly hard to define. This is because there are so many ways of looking at stress. Some researchers
have studied how our bodies react to stress. You know how your heart beats faster, you perspire more
heavily, and your words do not come out right when you are placed in a stressful situation. But knowing
how we feel when experience stress does not explain it; nor does it tell us what causes it.
Other scientists have looked at stressors: events or situations that produce stress. A deadline, a poor
test performance, or bothersome noises all may be thought of as stressors. Even pleasant events can be
stressors. Planning a party or starting a new job can be just as stressful as being called to the principal’s
office. Stress, then, can be caused by both negative and positive events, or stressors. Of course, whether an
event is thought of as positive or negative is, in some ways, a matter of personal choice.
In sum, it is the way people interpret an event that makes it stressful or not stressful. This process of
interpretation is called appraisal. Depending on how people appraise, or judge, circumstances, they may or
may not consider them stressful.

Combining visual channels of facial expression and body gesture is a (34) way
to accomplish effective affect analysis. The psychological researchers (35) studied about
body language suggests that the integration of facial expression and body gesture is a
98
mandatory process occurring early in human processing stream. So the two modalities should
be processed in a joint feature space, rather than fused at the decision-level. (36) of
the main difficulties for the feature-level fusion is that the features from different
modalities may be incompatible, and the (37) between different feature spaces is
unknown. Our motivation is that, as facial expression and body gesture are two sets of
measurements for the affective state, conceptually they are correlated. (38) ,this analysis
can establish their relationship, deriving a semantic “affect” space, in which the face and body
features are compatible and can be effectively fused.

Gestures’ by Caifeng Shan, Shaogang Gong, and Peter W. McOwan.)

Many students believe that math is an inherited ability – either they have the math gene or
they don’t. However, a recent research shows that inborn talent might not be as important as we
think. In the long run, the most successful students are often those who work the hardest, not
those with the highest IQs. These students believe that perseverance, not an innate gift, is the
key to achievement.
In her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Carol Dweck argues that a positive
mindset is what makes some students push themselves when others give up. Students with a
“fixed mindset” believe that they were born with a certain set of talents. They see challenges as
a sign that they’ve reached the limit of their natural ability, and they stop trying. On the
contrary, students with a “growth mindset” believe that there are no limits on their potential,
and view challenges as a chance to learn and improve. They know that their intelligence can be
built through experience and effort, and are not held back by the idea of inborn restrictions.
Geoff Colvin delivers a similar message in his book, Talent Is Overrated. He demonstrates
that success is almost always the result of what he calls “deliberate practice”, concentrated
effort to improve one’s skills through focused effort. Inborn talent might make a difference
when a subject is first tackled, but years later, it’s the hard-working children who are the most
successful. Kim Callan – a math teacher – agrees: “It is rare for a hard-working student to fail
in my class.”
Having the right mindset is critical to success. Children need to believe in their ability to
overcome challenges through concentrated effort. If you place your child in the right math class
and encourage him/ her to work hard, there’s no limit to what he/she will be able to accomplish.

The invention of the electric telegraph gave birth to the communications industry. Although Samuel B.
Morse succeeded in making the invention useful in 1837, it was not until 1843 that the first telegraph line of
consequence was constructed. By 1860 more than 50,000 miles of lines connected people east of the
Rockies. The following year, San Francisco was added to the network.
The national telegraph network fortified the ties between East and West and contributed to the rapid
expansion of the railroads by providing an efficient means to monitor schedules and routes. Furthermore,
the extension of the telegraph, combined with the invention of the steam-driven rotary printing press by
Richard M. Hoe in 1846, revolutionized the world of journalism. Where the business of news gathering
had been dependent upon the mail and on hand-operated presses, the telegraph expanded the amount of

In the past, traveling was nothing less than a dangerous adventure. People had no means of transport
as they have now. They faced all sorts of danger such as bad weather, wild beasts and robbers. Therefore,
most people did not like to go away from their villages. Only those who were adventurous set out on a long

Now people living in any part of a country can travel to any other part in comfort. Every country sets
up a railway network. A small sum of money is required to go from one corner of the country to another. If

Social media marketing has increased due to the growing active user rates on social media sites. For
example, Facebook currently has 2.2 billion users, Twitter has 330 million active users and Instagram has
800 million users.
One of the main uses is to interact with audiences to create awareness of the brand or service, with the
main idea of creating a two-way communication system where the audience and/or customers can interact
back; providing feedback as just one example. Social media can be used to advertise; placing an advert on
Facebook's Newsfeed, for example, can allow a vast number of people to see it or targeting specific
audiences from their usage to encourage awareness of the product or brand. Users of social media are then
able to like, share and comment on the advert, becoming message senders as they can keep passing the
advert's message on to their friends and onwards. The use of new media put consumers on the position of
spreading opinions, sharing experience, and has shift power from organization to consumers for it allows
transparency and different opinions to be heard.
Media marketing has to keep up with all the different platforms. They also have to keep up with the
ongoing trends that are set by big influencers and draw many people’s attention. The type of audience a
business is going for will determine the social media site they use.
