If the supply is on during relamping, disconnect both lamps simultaneously for 1 second, then the ballast will start automatically.
If there are no lamps connected, the ballast will not start at all and will not go to "Stand-by"- state either.

LAYOUT RECOMMENDATION
In order to minimise radio interference problems we recommend that the mains wiring and the lamp wiring are kept as far as
possible from each other. In no case must they be bunched together for long distances. They can however cross each other. The
ballast shall be installed in the same fixture with the lamps. The wires from the ballast to a lamp may not be longer than 2 m. Solid

SWITCH-CONTROL CONNECTION
The switch used should be of the automatic return variety. The connection of the switch should be between the 'switch-control'
input and the Neutral (or Live) connection. Switch-Control should only be connected to ballasts on the same mains phase.
Notes: Mains voltage is still present at the mains input terminals if the lamps are switched off via the switch-control. The switch
should be mains rated. Max. length of switch-control wiring = 50 meters.

“STAND-BY” STATE
"Stand-by" is an internal safety circuit in the ballast. The ballast switches the lamps off and goes into the "Stand-by" state when a
lamp becomes defective.
If the supply is on during relamping, the ballast will start automatically.
Stand-by can be activated from the switch-control. The ballast will go to stand-by if the mains voltage drops to a low level.
8
LAYOUT RECOMMENDATION
To minimise RFI problems the mains wiring and lamp wiring must be kept as far as possible from each other. They should not be
bunched together for long distances. They can however cross each other. If a metal plate is positioned closer than 10mm to the
lamp the plate must be electrically connected to the ballast case. Even with longer distances we recommend this connection.
In order to ensure reliable dimming at low levels, and minimise electro-magnetic interference, pairs of lamp wires (one pair is
connected to one lamp cathode) should be run seperately from each other.
The wires from the ballast to a lamp may not be longer than 2 m. The ballast is designed as a "built-in" product and should be
installed in the same fixture as the lamps it operates. Master-Slave operation is not advised. Solid Core Conductor -type 0.5 - 1.5
mm2 is to be used as connecting wire.
Safety: Lampholders must be rated up to 500 V.

“STAND-BY” STATE
"Stand-by" is an internal safety circuit in the ballast. The ballast switches the lamps off and goes into the "Stand-by" state when a
lamp becomes defective.
If the supply is on during relamping, the ballast will re-start automatically.
8

LAYOUT RECOMMENDATION
In order to minimise radio interference problems we recommend that the mains wiring and the lamp wiring are kept as far as
possible from each other. In no case must they be bunched together for long distances. They can however cross each other. The
wires from the ballast to a lamp may not be longer than 2 m. The ballast is designed as a "built-in" product and should be installed
in the same fixture as the lamps it operates.
Master-Slave operation is not advised. Earthing of the ballast is required for proper operation. Solid Core Conductor -type 0.5 -
1.5 mm2 is to be used as connecting wire. Control wires must have an insulation rating greater or equal to mains supply wires.
Safety: Lampholders must be rated up to 500 V.

“STAND-BY” STATE
The ballast switches the lamps off, when a lamp becomes deactivated. After changing the faulty lamp, the ballast can be restarted by
switching the mains off, for minimum 10 seconds. The ballast might also go into "stand-by"-state if the lamp circuit is disrupted or if the
mains voltage rises too high. If there is no lamp connected or the cathodes are broken, the ballast will not start at all. In this case the
ballast may restart without a 10 seconds reset period. The electronic ballast is equipped with a thermal protector which switches the
ballast into the "stand-by"-state in case of overheating. After cooling down it can be restarted by switching the mains off for 10 seconds.

LAYOUT RECOMMENDATION

In order to minimise radio interference problems we recommend When operated at high frequency the tube will start and dim
that the mains wiring and the lamp wiring are kept as far as smoothly also with a too weak pre-heat current (in conventional
possible from each other. In no case must they be bunched 50 Hz pre-heat operation a strong flicker will be visible in this
together for long distances. They can however cross each other. case). A weak pre-heat current can be caused by bad contacts
in the pre-heat circuit (ballast terminals, lamp holder terminals
To assure good dimming the ballast unit should be installed in
or lamp pin connections) and will result in severe end
the fitting with as short a lamp wiring as possible. If single lamp
blackening and thus pre-mature failures of the lamps. To
fittings are installed in a row, two fittings can be connected to
prevent this from happening, special care should be taken to
one two-lamp ballast, if the distance between the lamps does
ensure good contacts in above mentioned points.

Unlike the gas or vapour zones, dust zones cannot be divided into normal and abnormal conditions dependent upon time, as dust
is not self-correcting by ventilation over a stipulated period. In fact the opposite occurs as accelerated ventilation may lead to dust
clouds therefore creating greater, not lesser, hazardous conditions (See also AS/NZS & IEC 61241 Series).

NOTE: Always check compatibility of gas, vapour and cleansers with polycarbonate outercases when recommending any of this
equipment. Glass is available as an option in many instances.

TECHNICAL
Types of Protection & Explosion Techniques

A technique of explosion protection which is applied to an apparatus or

part of an apparatus to provide an assurance of safety.

Intrinsic Safety - (Ex i) AS2380 Part 7 -1987

A circuit or part of a circuit is intrinsically safe when any sparking produced normally, or by specified fault conditions, is incapable
of causing ignition of a prescribed gas or vapour.

Flameproof Enclosure - (Ex d) AS2380-Part 2 -1991

An enclosure for electrical equipment which is designed to withstand an internal explosion, (should it occur) without damage. The
length and gap of the flamepaths are the mechanism by which the explosion spark or flame is quenched to a lesser temperature than
will ignite the surrounding hazard in the atmosphere, for which the equipment has been designed, ie Group I, IIA, B and C gases.
A flameproof enclosure will not necessarily be weatherproof or dustproof

Increased Safety Protection - (Ex e) AS2380 Part 6 -1988

A method of protection by which additional measures are applied to electrical equipment so as to provide increased security
against the possibility of excessive temperatures and of the occurrence of arcs and sparks. It applies only to electrical equipment
of which no parts produce arcs or sparks or exceed the limiting temperature in normal service.

Non Sparking Equipment - (Ex n) AS2380 Part 9 -1991

A type of protection applied to electrical apparatus that will not ignite surrounding explosive atmosphere in normal operation and
in which a fault capable of causing ignition is not likely to occur.

Dust Excluding Ignition Proof - (DIP) AS/NZS & IEC 61241 Series
An enclosure which excludes dust and will not permit arcs, sparks or heat otherwise generated or liberated inside the enclosure
to cause ignition of exterior accumulations or atmospheric suspensions of a specified dust on or in the vicinity of the enclosure.
This standard recognises the T1 to T6 temperature classification in lieu of two groups 80 and 120 degrees C.
Note: A dust excluding ignition proof enclosure as defined above will not be flameproof unless constructed in accordance with
AS2380 Part 2 1991.

Ignition Temperatures
Maximum surface temperatures of equipment referenced to 40 degrees C ambient operating at fault condition.
T1 - 450 degrees T4 - 135 degrees
T2 - 300 degrees T5 - 100 degrees
T3 - 200 degrees T6 - 85 degrees
Accordingly, hazardous materials are also classified into the minimum temperature ranges required to ignite or cause
self-sustained combustion. See Table 5.1 AS1076 Part 1 1977.

Hazards
Grouped according to explosive characteristics
8
Gas group I Methane, underground mining
Gas group IIA & B Above ground gases and vapours
Gas group IIC Hydrogen and acetylene

See table 5.1 of AS 1076 part 1 1977.

These groups determine the flamepath dimensions of the Ex d equipment.

OD5 Series Twin Lamp Luminaire

Ex e OD5 Series (for Bi-Pin Lamps)

OD5 ME Series
Maintained emergency fittings include an integral emergency pack consisting of a solid state inverter, battery charger, high
temperature Nicad battery pack and change-over circuit. In a twin luminaire, both tubes will be illuminated during normal supply
under control of the switched active supply. When the monitored supply (unswitched) fails, one of the tubes operates at 10 watt
illumination for 2 hours, after 16 hours recharge from fully discharged. This luminaire requires an unswitched active supply for
battery charging and supply monitoring and a switched active for normal operation. The emergency pack requires 10VA for supply
monitoring and battery charging. A red LED provides indication of the operation of the battery charger and the readiness of the
emergency pack. Photometric classification is Co C50 & C90 B50.

WHAT AFFECTS FAN PERFORMANCE?

TYPE of FAN

Centrifugal Flow V’s Axial Flow

Pressure developing fans which achieve good flow against Suitable for wall, window and roof applications where they
the resistance created in a ducted system. can extract directly to the outside. Short duct runs are an
option but the length of duct should be limited.
Particularly useful in venting areas like internal bathrooms /
laundries, multi room extraction systems, heat transfer e.g. 100mm dia: up to 3m length
systems etc. 120mm dia: up to 4m length
150mm dia: up to 5m length
250mm dia: up to 6m length

THE EFFECTS OF DUCTING

Smaller Ducts = Greater Resistance to Airflow
Tight Bends = Greater Resistance to Airflow
The Longer the Duct and more Bends = Greater Resistance to Airflow
Wrinkled Ducting = Greater Resistance to Airflow
Smoother, Extended Ducting = Smooth, Increased Airflow

LOCATION OF THE FAN

Careful location of an extraction fan will ensure maximum airflow through the room. Air extracted from a bathroom, for example,
can be replaced with dry air drawn from adjacent bedroom or hallway, which is in turn drawn from an open window or door. This
ensures that fresh air is being drawn into the entire house at regular periods.

TERMINATION THEORY AND PRACTICES

COMPRESSION TERMINATION THEORY

Utilux crimp lugs, links and stalk lugs are designed to be compatible with Utilux indent tools and hydraulic tools with
hexagonal or indent dies. Through this exact matching the resultant terminations achieve a consistently precise
compression – neither over stressed nor understressed – to produce the correct indent or hexagonal force.
The crimp is designed to bring all conductors and the connector itself into intimate contact. At the same time, the
crimp is designed to avoid any reduction in the cross sectional area of the conductor, with an increased contact area.

BASIC COMPRESSION TERMINATION PRACTICES

1. Strip the cable insulation to the recommended length. Recommended stripping lengths of conductors should
correspond to the barrel lengths shown in this catalogue.
2. With non plated copper conductors, scratch brushing may be carried out on the bare copper conductor. On
aluminium conductors however, scratch brushing must be carried out. Terminating should be completed as soon
as possible after stripping of the insulation.
3. To ensure a reliable termination, the correct connector for a given cable size must be selected. Moreover, the
recommended indent tool or hexagon tool and die must also be used. See the various data tables in this catalogue
for tooling recommendations.
4. Fit the connector over the stripped conductor and place the connector into the hand or hydraulic tool. Apply the
recommended pressure. With hand tools, the crimp is not complete until the jaws meet or the ratchet releases. With
hex dies in hydraulic tools, the faces of the die must meet.
5. The number of crimps per connector can vary. Some lugs have markings for crimps, if you require more information
please contact Repelec.

TERMINATION RECOMMENDATIONS
The palm contact areas of Utilux lugs are designed to give more than that the surface of lugs are used upon has
corresponding contact area. Excessive drilling out of palm holes must be avoided, to ensure that adequate palm
contact, heavy gauge washers are recommended. in relation to stalk lugs and consistent with the above, care must be
taken to adequately match the stalk diameter of the tunnel or mounting connector, to ensure maximum surface contact
area. Bolting torques are listed in the following table.

UTILUX METRIC CODING SYSTEM

FLEXIBLE CABLE CRIMPING

The crimping of connectors onto flexible conductors is problematic due to the large amount of air gaps between conductor
strands. This results in a large physical size for a relatively small conductor cross section. Thus the standard size lug for a
given area of flexible conductor is usually too small. If a larger size lug is used instead, the standard die for that size lug will
not achieve the desired compression.
Indent crimping is not recommended, as the indent may damage the very fine strands of a flexible conductor which may
in turn cause connector failure.
Adopting the Utilux “Half Hex” crimping method solves the problem.
This method employs a crimping shape in the form of one half of the standard hexagon shape. The dies used comprise a
normal hexagon crimp die, along with a special flat die to give the half hexagon shape. The hexagon die is sufficiently large
to close around the lug completely, giving adequate compression.
Normally the conductor’s area will be known or can be located on the chart below. However if not known, it has to be
established. To do this we require the amount of strands and individual strand diameter. Counting the amount of strands is
not as daunting a task as it appears. The lay of the conductor will generally be a series of bundled strands, with each bundle
having the same lay as a regular laid conductor, eg 7, 19, 37 strands etc. Having established the amount of strands to a
bundle, count the amount of bundles and multiply. For example for a 95mm2 the conductor may be 259/0.7 with a nominal
diameter of 13.8mm, from this the true area is 99.7mm2. The diameter is too large for a 95mm2 barrel but will fit a 120mm2
barrel. It can then be crimped using the half hex method.
Rule of thumb for matching conductor to lug, providing conductor diameter allows, is whatever the area of the conductor,
choose the next size larger lug.
