EE211 Digital-to-Analog and Analog-to-Digital Converters Required Equipment: 1 - 74LS191, DIP4 switch, 2 741 op amp, 4 47Kohm resistors, 2 3.

3.9Kohm resistors, 1 2Kohm resistor, 1 MC1408 DAC, 1 4.7V Zener diode (1N7432), 1 1Kohm resistor, 1 10K potentiometer, cables, breadboard and wires. Part 1: DAC 1. Read supplied Lab 7: Digital-to-Analog Converter and run described VIs. 2. Assemble the following circuit, which is a modification of the circuit from Figure 7-4 of the handout. Do not forget to connect positive and negative power, and ground to pins 13, 3 and 2 of the DAC (refer to Figure 7-4). While assembling the circuit, make sure that you take no more than half of the breadboard space (it will be used for additional components).

Answer the following questions. 3. What is the purpose of IC2? How does it work?

4. What is the maximum output voltage of this DAC? 5. What is the resolution (V/bit) of this DAC?

Part 2: Ramp and tracking ADC 7. Read supplied Lab 8: Analog-to-Digital Converter, Part I, run described VIs and work on the Labview challenge. Study the datasheet for 74LS191. 8. Modify the assembled circuit. Do not forget to connect power and ground to the TTL counter. Connect Vclock to a 5V, 10KHz pulse train from the waveform generator. Demonstrate the working ADC to the instructor.

10. What is the purpose of the circuit formed by R1 and D1? Explain.

13. Disconnect pin 5 of the 74LS191 from the ground and connect it to +5V. Using the scope, observe Vout for a variety of Vx. Did anything change? Explain your observations.

14. Convert this circuit into a tracking ADC. (Hint: only 4 connections have to be modified). Demonstrate your work. Part 3: Successive approximation ADC 15. Read supplied Lab 9: Analog-to-Digital Converter, Part II and run described VIs.
