ORTHOGRAPHIC
DRAWING
1. Orthographic Projection
This usually consists of three views drawn to
scale, projecting at 90° to each other.
Orthographic drawings contain all the
information needed to make an object. The
information must be accurate, so others can
understand and interpret them.
Orthographic drawings are best used
when:
•you are producing construction drawings
•accurate technical information about sizes is
needed
•many separate parts are needed
There are 3 types of orthographic drawing:
1. One view or lay out drawing
2. Two views or working drawing
3. Three regular views
Consider the following pointers in orthographic
projection :
1. The part of the object with the most distinct
shape should be chosen as front view.
2. In order to avoid or minimize numerous hidden
views, the front view has to be pointed out to
serve the purpose.
3. Avoid unnecessary views, represent only views
which are great importance.
4. Position the front view in the lower left hand
corner of the drawing paper.
5. Place the top view in line with and directly over
the front view.
6. The right side view known as the end view is
place in line with and directly positioned to the
right of the front view.
7. The thickness and length of the object are
revealed in the front view.
8. The thickness and width of the object are
revealed in right-side view.
9. The width or depth and length of the object are
revealed in the top view.
Orthographic or Multiview Drawing
Imagine that you have an object suspended by transparent
threads inside a glass box.
Then draw the object on each of three faces as seen from that
direction. We call this an "orthographic" or "multiview" drawing

Dimensioning
The purpose of dimensioning is to provide a clear and
complete description of an object. A complete set of
dimensions will permit only one interpretation needed
to construct the part. Dimensioning should follow
these guidelines.
1.Accuracy: correct values must be given.
2.Clearness: dimensions must be placed in appropriate
positions.
3.Completeness: nothing must be left out, and nothing
duplicated.
4.Readability: the appropriate line quality must be
used for legibility.
