10 1st GRADING/EARTH AND SPACE ________ 1
Plate Boundaries
(Convergent Plate Boundary)
Objectives:
Show the effects of head-on collision of plates on the rock strata forming the topographic features you observe today.
Materials:
Modeling clay of different colors (at least 3 kinds)
Procedure:
1. Knead the three kinds of clay into two rectangular sheets each.
2. Place one sheet of clay over another sheet that is made of different color. The stratification of different colored glue sheets
symbolizes the crustal block.
3. Make sure that the sequence of colored layers of 1 crustal block corresponds to the other crustal block. (If you made a
red-blue-green sequence as one crustal block, then there should be another crustal block with the same order of colors
and same thickness).
4. Place the two blocks in two separate papers. Not too small nor not too large for the blocks of clays.
5. When all of this is done, slowly made the two crustal blocks come together. As they meet, observe how the different
layers react.
6. Write your observations.
Draw your observations

7. Repeat procedures 1 to 5 but this time make the other crustal block thinner than the other one.
8. Write your observations.

Guide Questions:
Q1. What happen to the strips of clay as they were push from opposite ends?
Q2. If the strips of clay represents the earth’s lithosphere,
what do you think is formed to the earth’s lithosphere?
Q3. What other geologic event could take place with this type of plate movement?
