Introduction to Soil Pollution
Soil, the cornerstone of terrestrial ecosystems and agriculture, faces severe threats from pollution.
Soil pollution involves the contamination of soil with harmful substances, degrading its quality,
fertility, and ecological balance. This issue jeopardizes environmental health and human well-being.
The primary causes of soil pollution are industrial waste, agricultural chemicals, and plastic waste.
Industries produce toxic waste, including heavy metals and solvents, that can infiltrate soil.
Agricultural practices contribute through the excessive use of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers,
which accumulate and disrupt soil health. Additionally, plastic waste, resistant to decomposition,
breaks down into microplastics that alter soil structure and introduce toxic chemicals, further
contaminating the environment and food chains.
To address this, understanding the sources and mechanisms of soil pollution is crucial. Strategies to
mitigate this issue include responsible waste management, sustainable agricultural practices, and
reducing plastic use to protect soil health for future generations.
Simple Solutions to Reduce Plastic Pollution
