Library Closings Happy New Year! Welcome to 2012! The Library will be closed on Monday, January 2, and on Monday, January 16 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We will open the following day at our regular hours. New Library Hours As we start with a fresh budget in 2012, the Library Trustees first order of business is to restore our operating hours. Thanks to all those who took the time to fill out our survey so that we had a better idea of what works best for the community. Our new hours begin the week of Jan. 2, and yes, we will be open on Fridays! Please note that in order to maintain our current Thursday schedule we will now be opening later on Mondays. Monday 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM**** Tuesday 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Wednesday 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM Thursday 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM Friday 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM**** Saturday 9:00 AM- 2:00 PM Cold and Flu Season If you are not feeling well or are just outright sick, please, please, please do NOT go out in public places like the Library! This suspense thriller is about a family that unknowingly moves into a home where several grisly murders were committed ... only to find themselves the killers next target. Please note: These movies contain adult content and language. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Gardeners Roundtable Wednesday, January 18 at 6:00 PM Wednesday, February 1 at 6:00 PM Please note: This months meeting is later due to the holidays. Januarys meeting will be our annual planning and discussion meeting. We will go through the calendar and choose dates for events and programs we want to do including our annual garden tour and our annual harvest dinner. Please bring your ideas and suggestions! This is a free program for gardeners and those who are interested in gardening and small farming. Adult Poets and Writers Group Monday, January 9 at 6:00 PM Monday, February 6 at 6:00 PM We are planning to do a small book of love poems and very short love stories in February. We would like submissions of these no later than January 14 and they must be e-mailed. Please e-mail anything you would like to share to goodwinprograms@gmail.com. For those interested in coming to a meeting, we are an enthusiastic and supportive group of poets, novelists, and singer/songwriters. All writers and interested listeners are welcome to join us and enjoy the work of the many talented people in our community. Adult Book Club Monday, January 23 at 6:00 PM Monday, February 13 at 6:00 PM This month we will be discussing Strangers by Dean Koontz. If you are one of the many Koontz fans who have already read this book, please be sure to join us

Farmington Film Society at the Goodwin Library Wednesday, January 25 at 6:00 PM Wednesday, February 22 at 6:00 PM This month we will be showing The Devils Double based on an unbelievable true story that took place in Baghdad, 1987. Iraqi army

and take part in the discussion. Next, we will be beginning the futuristic trilogy by Susan Pfeffer beginning with Life as We Knew It. It should be a fascinating series. Come join us! Friends of the Goodwin Library Meeting Wednesday, January 11 at 6:00 PM Wednesday, February 8 at 6:00 PM The Friends group is working hard to raise money in order to continue to support Library Programs. You can join the Friends simply by paying a small membership fee (all fees are used to support the Library). If you are interested in becoming a member of the Friends, please join us for the next meeting. Applications to become a member of the Friends are available at the library and available on the Goodwin Library website under the Friends tab at www.goodwinlibrary.org. Kids Cartoon Club Monday, January 30 at 6:00 PM Monday, February 27 at 6:00 PM Inspired by Jetpack Comics appearance here in December, we will be drawing up comic pages. Be sure to join us for this fun exercise in cartooning and character development. Childrens Room News

New Book Titles The Goodwin Library is proud of our ability to provide our community with fresh supply and variety of new and interesting books. The newest books are always on the shelves near the front desk and on the shelves on either side of the front door. While we are sure to have the best sellers, we also look for intriguing titles with our patrons in mind. Here are just a couple of titles you might consider: Velva Jean Learns to Drive and Velva jean Learns to Fly by Jennifer Niven; The Scrapbook of Frankie Pratt (a collage scrapbook novel) by Caroline Preston, An Accident in August (what happens to a witness to the accident that killed Princess Diana) by Laurence Crosse. Check our online catalog at www.goodwinlibrary.org and click on the Whats Hot button for the newest additions to our collection. You can also browse the whole catalog and find detailed descriptions and reviews for many of the books in our collection. The Saturday Afternoon Knitters Saturday, January 7 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM Are you a knitter, or someone who enjoys crocheting? Whether you are a beginner or a pro, bring an ongoing project or ideas for a new one and spend an enjoyable afternoon with other knitters. See Community News for ideas on projects for knitters. Community Cold Weather Knitters Needed We are collecting knitted hats, mittens, scarves, and gloves to distribute to local families. We would also love to have donations of handmade knitted shawls for retirement home and nursing home residents. You can drop off your knitted items to either circulation desk. Food Donations/ Food for Fines Please help us help those less fortunate in our community. Winters are hard for our local families. With food prices constantly on the rise, and the extra expense of heat, it becomes very difficult for many make ends meet. Please pick up an extra can or two to donate to our local food pantry. We accept canned goods, non-perishable foods, personal care items, paper items, and pet food. It is a great way to use your extra coupons. All donations are distributed to the community through the Farmington Interfaith Food Pantry.

Winter Story Times begin this month! We will be offering 3 sessions: Babies & Books, Pre-school and Sleepy Time (K-3rd grade) January 18- Feb. 22. Your child MUST be pre-registered to participate, and available slots are filling up quickly, so please stop by or call the Childrens Room at 755-2944, ext. 3 to find out more!
New DVDs Winter is here and there is nothing like hunkering down with a great movie, popcorn, and hot chocolate on a cold winter night. We have a great selection for you to choose from including new and classic comedies, drama, and suspense and horror movies. How about Super 8 by J.J. Abrams. This great suspense film is the story of a group of kids making a homemade zombie movie who happen to film something top secret. It has a terrific cast and fantastic special effects. Be sure to check out the extras available the DVD. Other new releases include Monsters, a different kind of alien invasion film, and last months Film Society pick Everything Must Go starring Will Ferrell.
