Problem: A rigid vessel is initially divided into two parts.

Part A contains 1kg of steam at X bar dry & saturated. Part B contains 2 kg of steam of Y bar with dryness fraction 0.8. The partition is removed & the pressure in the vessel after sometimes is found at Z bar. Find a) Volume of the vessel. b) State the steam at Z bar. c) Heat interchange between steam & surrounding walls. Solution: Part-A Pressure PA = X bar Mass mA = 1kg Partition Pressure PAB = Z bar Mass mAB = (mA+ mB) = (1+2)kg =3 k Dryness fraction, xAB = 0.9 Wet steam

Part-B Pressure PB =Y bar Mass mB = 2kg Dryness fraction, xB = 0.8 Dry & Saturated Stem Wet steam Given, Pressure PA = X=

bar (Nearest value 17 of the table)

Pressure PB =Y=35 bar (Taken my own Id of last two digit 34 nearest value is 35 of the table) Pressure PAB = Z= Mass mA = 1kg Mass mB = 2kg Dryness fraction, xB = 0.8 Pressure bar P X=17.5=17 Y=34=35 Z=26.25=25 Temperature Specific volume 0 m3/kg C T Vw Vs 204.3 0.001163 0.1167 242.5 0.001234 0.0571 223.9 0.001197 0.0799 Specific enthalpy KJ/kg L hs 1921 2793 1753 2803 1839 2801 bar (Nearest value 25 of the table)

a) Volume of the vessel PART-A: For X =17 bar pressure, from table we have got the specific volume VS = 0.1167 m3/kg So, volume of part-A, VA = VS mA 1) m3/kg kg

VA = (0.1167 VA = 0.1167 m3 PART-B:

For Y =35 bar pressure, from table we have got the specific volume VS = 0.0571 m3/kg So, volume of part-B, VB = VS mB xB 2 ) m3/kg kg

VB = (0.0571 VB = 0.09136 m3

So the volume of the vessel, VAB = (VA + VB) VAB = (0.1167 +0.1867) m3 VAB = 0.20806 m3 b) Steam at Z bar For Z =25 bar pressure, from table we have got the specific volume VS = 0.0799 m3/kg So, the total volume of the vessel, VAB = VS (mB +mB) xAB xAB [So, volume of the vessel, VAB = 0.20806 m3]

0.20806 = 0.0799 (1+2) xAB = 0.868 0.9

So when the partition is removed the whole vessel contains wet steam at 25 bar pressure with dryness fraction 0.9.

c) Heat interchange between steam & surrounding walls PART-A: For X =17 bar pressure, from table we have got the Specific enthalpy hw = 872 KJ/kg L = 1921 KJ/kg So the enthalpy of Part-A, HA = hw + L HA = (872 + 1921) KJ/kg HA = 2793 KJ/kg So the heat of part-A for 1 kg dry & saturated steam HA = (2793 1) KJ/kg HA = 2793 KJ PART-B: For Y =35 bar pressure, from table we have got the Specific enthalpy hw = 1050 KJ/kg L = 1753 KJ/kg xB = 0.8 So the enthalpy of Part-B, HB = hw + XL HB = (1050 + (0.8 1753)) KJ/kg HB = 2452.4 KJ/kg So the heat of part-B for 2 kg Wet steam HB = (2452.4 2) KJ/kg HB= 4904.8 KJ kg kg

Total vessel: For Z =25 bar pressure, from table we have got the Specific enthalpy hw = 962 KJ/kg L = 1839 KJ/kg xAB = 0.9 So the enthalpy of the Total vessel, HAB= hw + XL HAB = (962+ (0.9 1839)) KJ/kg HAB = 2617.1 KJ/kg So the heat of the total vessel for 3 kg Wet steam HAB = (2617.1 3) KJ/kg HAB = 7851.3 KJ So the heat interchanges between steam & surrounding walls = (HAB-HA+HB) = (7851.3- (2793+4904.8)) KJ =153.5 KJ So 153.5 KJ heat interchanges between steam & surrounding walls. kg

PART-A: For X =17 bar pressure, we have got the Specific enthalpy, hw = 872 KJ/kg L = 1921 KJ/kg So the enthalpy of Part-A, HA = hw + L HA = (872 + 1921) KJ/kg HA = 2793 KJ/kg PART-B: For Y =35 bar pressure, we have got the Specific enthalpy, hw = 1050 KJ/kg L = 1753 KJ/kg xB = 0.8 So the enthalpy of Part-B, HB = hw + XL HB = (1050 + (0.8 1753)) KJ/kg HB = 2452.4 KJ/kg Total vessel For Z =25 bar pressure, we have got the Specific enthalpy, hw = 962 KJ/kg L = 1839 KJ/kg xAB = 0.9 So the enthalpy of the Total vessel, HAB= hw + XL HAB = (962+ (0.9 1839)) KJ/kg

HAB = 2617.1 KJ/kg So the heat interchanges between steam & surrounding walls = (HAB-HA+HB) = (2617.1- (2793+2452.4)) KJ = -2628.3 KJ So -2628.3 KJ heat interchanges between steam & surrounding walls
