Charismatic Guidelines For Faith Baptist Church by Pastor L.R Minnaar 30.12.2011

A man had witnessed a miracle, he had seen a person healed, he had witnessed the miracle of a man literally declared brain dead and he has experienced and seen and heard men speak in tongues. His argument statement that was made, what do you say about what we have witnessed? It is a strong argument in terms of a first hand experience testimony, This is my response and this is why we at Faith Baptist Church will not follow the Charismatic movement. My view as always is "What saith the Lord?" Everything we do and say must be weighed against Scripture. We are told to "try the spirit"1 and our Lord Jesus Christ, after being without food for 40 days was tempted by the Devil and this was His response it is written.."2 I believe that the cry of all time throughout all generations should be "solar Scripture". Scripture alone is to be the judge of all things. This being the case, what do the Scriptures say about the above mentioned testimony? I will present the biblical view according to the following outline I. Who is Satan? II. Features of a follower of Satan III. Mighty deeds and wonders attributed to Satan IV. Examples of the out pouring of Satans mighty deeds V. Christians are encouraged to try the Spirit VI. What is Christs purpose VII. Christs promise of mighty works VIII. How does my faith increase in God? Who is Satan? Satan is a fallen Angel. The name Angel means messenger. Not only was he an Angel, but he was a highly appointed Angel called "Cherub" Eze_28:14. His responsibility was the guardian of God's holiness. He had another name given to him, Lucifer Isa_14:12, which means light. He was created sinless and full of beauty Eze_28:15 and it is this beauty that we see that caused him to have sin found in him Eze_28:17. Then we find the sin of pride overtakes him, to the degree that he wants to be Godlike Isa_14:13-14 It is interesting to note that Satan used the same sales pitch to Eve when he deceived her in the garden of Eden Gen_3:5 .3 Because of sin, Satan is banished out of heaven till the day of judgement 4 Not only does Satan fall into sin, but he takes a third of the angels with him.Rev_12:4 5 Satan is known by twenty two names, and it would behoove us to look at them, they describes his character and the things he does. 6 1. Satan - adversary 3. The god of this age 2Co_4:4 5. Prince of this world Joh_12:31 7. Leviathan - sea serpent Isa_27:1 9. The Dragon Rev_12:7 11. Apollyon - Destroyer Rev_9:11 13. Belial - vile or ruthless 2Co_6:15 15. The tempter 1Th_3:5 17. Angel of light 2Co_11:14-15 19. A Murderer Joh_8:44 21. A roaring lion 1Pe_5:8 2. Devil - slanderer 4. The king of death Heb_2:14 6. The Ruler of darkness Eph_6:12 8. Lucifer - light bearer Isa_14:12 10. The deceiver Rev_20:10 12. Beelzebub - prince of demons Mat_12:24 14. The wicked one Mat_13:38 16. The accuser Rev_12:10 18. A Liar Joh_8:44 20. The enemy Mat_13:39 22. Prince of the power of the air Eph_2:2

Now, with all this background knowledge, we know that he is out there to deceive the world. He had mustered a third of all the angels to rebel against God with him and it will be his intention to muster another army of all nations in the near future, to take on God's chosen nation (Israel) in the battle of Gog and Magog Rev_20:7-9 . According to the parable of the Sower Mat_13:18-23, Satan goes about the business of stopping you from getting saved, however, if he cannot, he then goes around like a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour and accusing the

1Jn_4:1 Mat_4:4 3 Man to this day thinks he is God. Many leaders have proclaimed them selves gods and have aspired to this position, even today, the philosophy of humanism is that man is god. Man is the power and director of his destiny. It is the skills and knowledge of man that makes him so great. O how the mighty will fall. "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"Heb_9:27 4 Isa_14:12 Eze_28:16 . 5 For some unknown reason, we call them demons today. The word does not exist in the bible and I can find no reason for the name change. 6 extracted Willmingtons Guide to the Bible pg 763

believer before God, day and night. Rev_12:10 If he cannot stop you from getting saved, he is going to stop you from growing as a Christian and literally neutralize you, so that you will not be "fruitful" and fit for the "masters use"7 This brings me to my point. A gathering of believers is called a church; he will try everything he knows to stop the church from doing all it can in serving God. He will come with false Preachers, false Teachers, false doctrines, and false worship. He will work all out to cripple the church. Along with this crippling and false worship, he will take untold millions with him. They are part of his army. Remember if you are not for Christ, you are against Him. This makes you an Antichrist. Did Christ not use similar words to Peter "... Get thee behind me, Satan..." Mat_16:23-24 8 If Peter can become an adversary (enemy) so quickly, what about you and I? Features of a follower of Satan Here is where we start looking at Satans army. Who are they? How will we recognize them? What are the distinguishing features that we can identify them with? For us to be able to clearly identify their distinguishing features, we have to turn to Scripture. It is a discerner of the heart intent 9 We can not go by feelings and emotions or by what we think is right, or by being politically correct. It is that call once again sola Scripture! We are to recognize that Satan is a counterfeiter, He comes across as an "angel of light", he is able to transform himself to appear of the righteous. His ministers come across as Apostles, workers of righteousness, yet we are told that they are deceivers, that they are false. Folks they are working in the churches, as pastors, teachers, spiritual leaders, ministers and worship leaders, yet God says, marvel not! 10 We are told that there are blind leaders of the blind, and both will fall into the ditch (Hell) Luk_6:39 Not only are the teachers false, but it is the hearer who is not interested in the truth, or in "sound doctrine", their ears are "itchy", I remember a Pastor preaching and saying. doctrine is not important". 11 That statement is contrary to Scripture! The false teachings of Satan, is known as "Doctrines of Devils", and people will be seduced by these doctrines. 12 I am always amazed at the lack of fear of these false Pastors and teachers. Are they not afraid of God? I am always cautious when I share the Scriptures, I do not want to be guilty of being a false prophet, I take the Scriptures and its warnings seriously, For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Rev 22:18-19. These false prophets will even deny who Jesus Christ is. 13 Jude gives us an inkling what is in their hearts," Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. "Jud_1:13. Some prophets will preach falsely the things of God, they preach the things that is in their own hearts Jer_14:14. The bible warns of many false prophets 14

2Ti_2:21 Satan has been around for six thousands years, he is smarter, more deceptive and wicked that you and I will ever be. He tried to destroy Christ when He was a baby, he has tried to destroy the church, and he has tried to destroy the Bible, now he is destroying the Church in a very subtle way. Strength of hand does not do it, he has learned that a more subtle, deceptive way works, and he has used it with Eve in the garden of Eden, " ..Yea, hath God said.." Gen_3:1 He is crippling the Church today. The preachers are false, the teachers are false, the schools are false and the worship is false. We must mark the wise words and warnings given in Scripture "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand" Eph_6:10-13 But dear folks, God has said "...and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Mat 16:18 Praise be to God!

We are warned that it is not a good thing when the world speaks well of a Pastor or a church as such15 for this implies that the Church is worldly and that the world (Satan) loves their own. 16 Timothy tells us that you will be persecuted if you live a godly life 17 . I read a magazine several years ago (cannot remember who the credit goes to) where the author asked, who determines the moral standards of a nation? .. The answer is the Church! The Church then, should not be loved by the world, but feared (As they bring a message of Gods love and Gods eternal damnation and a demand for those of the faith, to a holy life. I want to look very briefly at the Church itself. It is possible for a Church to be "bewitched" This means to have been led by false pretenses. So a church can be led astray. 18 That the prophets will be unrecognizable as being false, yet we are told that they ravening wolves, I am reminded once again as to the description of Satan, a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour, and here we see that his ministers are describes as ravening wolves. Scary stuff! We are told that they would be seen as sheep, yet I noticed that they are in sheeps clothing, which by implication means that they are not of the "flock", not saved, not Christian, not born again. 19 An interesting observation is that they will show great signs and wonders, and eventually deceive the elect. 20 Folks, all I am saying is that there are false Preachers and Churches, Just because they sound good, are sweet people and are doing the "Lord's Work" does not make it true! 21You have to be discerning in this regard. Try the spirit! Here is an example of a false Pastor, Teacher or Minster or individual, who stands before Christ. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Mat_7:22-23 Mighty deeds attributed to Satan "Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders," 2Th 2:9 " And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. " Rev_19:20 I want to start out by bring out the fact that God used Moses to prove to Israel and the Pharaoh that God had sent him. To prove this, God gave him the sign or miracle to turn his rod into a snake, and or his hand would turn leprous and the third sign, that water will turn into blood Ex 4:1-9, and further on Moses raised up frogs. These were amazing miracles and signs and wonders to behold, however, Satan was able to perform the same, Pharaoh called the wise men, sorcerers and magicians of Egypt and they did the same. 22 If one would want to see a miracle or two then let us look at the mighty deeds of Satan in the life of Job. Satan said that he could make Job curse God, God in turn said that Satan could do whatever he wants, but no harm must come personally upon Job 23, we see several mighty signs and deeds of Satan, namely: The Sabeans had taken all of Jobs oxen and asses; Fire came rained down from heaven and killed the sheep and his servants; The Chaldeans attacked and killed the servants and stole his camels; A strong wind came down and struck the house where his sons and daughters were and killed them all. Yet Job did not curse God! Satan then said to God that if he was allowed to touch his body, he would curse God in his face. God allowed this to happen but said that Satan could not kill him. So we see another mighty deed and miracle performed by Satan, he caused Job to be covered in boils from his soles of his feet till the crown of his head 24 25

Luk_6:26 Joh_15:19 17 2Ti_3:12 18 Gal_3:1 19 Mat_7:15 20 Mat_24:24 21 Mat_24:24 22 There can be an argument that they were cunning men, (as illusionists), using slight of hand, or they did it by the powers of Satan (we cannot truly say) Exo_7:11-12 Exo_7:21-22 Exo_8:6-7 23 Job_1:11-12 24 Job_1:13-19 Job_2:4-8 25 Satan can make people do things, for example Judas. Before he betrayed Christ, Satan entered him (possessed him) and he went out and did what he determined to do, that is, to betray Christ. A mighty deed by Satan for sure! Joh_13:27 Luk_22:3

Satan and his fallen angels (for want of a common name today - we call them demons - I am not sure why) can work a miracle, having and showing mighty deeds and wonders by possessing a man or animals, We also notice that those that are demon possessed are extremely powerful, they can break chains with their bare hands, not only that, but many can possess the person at the same time (we call this mental illness or multiple personalities) 26 In another instance we see a man who is born dumb, when Christ removed the demon, the man could speak again (So some illness are not natural but caused by mighty deeds and signs wrought by demons) 27Some people who are effected by demons will fall on the ground in a frenzy, remove the demon who is working this miracle in the person, and they become normal. (it is the mighty works of a demon that caused the illness of epilepsy)28. Sometimes people who are demon possessed will hurt themselves, committing suicide etc, yet if you look closely, it is the mighty signs and wonders that are attributed to a demon. The demon wants to destroy its host.29 Not all sickness are due to demon possession and or the works of Satan, however we can attribute some to him. My point has been that Satan and his demons can cause people to attack you, cause people not to speak, he can cripple you with sores, and he can cause seemingly mental illness and epilepsy in people; if he can cause it, surely by removing the vexing spirit it would also appear that he has healed you? Is this not the "reverse of the coin"? We are told in the later days that the beast will be showing signs and wonders and mighty deeds, to such a degree that even the elect (the true believers, the saved) will be deceived.that is how slick he is ! Satan is deceiving the world and taking them down with him. If he can stop a whole church from serving God, he will use every trick in his book and it seems that mighty signs and wonders and deeds is a big attraction for mankind. They will follow him 30 "For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." Mat 24:24 Examples of the out pouring of Satans mighty deeds I want to show you some of the ways Satan uses false mighty wonders, signs and deeds. We are told from the mouth of Jesus that any who seeks a sign is an unbeliever, who are not sincere in heart and they demand that Jesus proves who He is or that He exists by using might signs and deeds.. 31 Satan tried the same tricks in Mat_4:1-11 The Holy Spirit said (In Gods Word 32 ) that our hope is not by sight but by faith Heb_11:1. We see many miracles performed, not by sight but by faith. 33 In Luke we see the account of Lazarus and the rich man. We notice that the rich man asks if someone could go over from hades and warn his family, but he was told that there is no crossing over, all they have to do is hear Moses and the Prophets (You will notice that, no emphasis was placed on mighty deeds and or miracles but the "hearing"), even then they will still not believe, though one has been raised from the dead Luk_16:19-31. 34 I am going to comment on two issues: faith healing and the gift of "speaking in tongues". The issue of faith healing to attract people to Christ is not the way that Jesus sent out the Apostles, He said go and preach repentance and the "Gospel" of Jesus Christ. 35 Satan comes along, (although we see the Lord had compassion on people and healed, many were crippled by Demons, it was not an illness or birth defect but rather a demon
Mat_8:28-34 Mar_5:1-20 Luk_11:14-15 Mat_17:14-23 29 Luk_4:31-37 30 "Twenty years ago at one of our home Bible study meetings we laid hands on Betty Tapscott, author of Inner Healing Through Healing of Memories and many other books, and she fell out under the power of God. She said one of us came by and said, 'Lord, keep her down!' She said it was as if something or someone's hand was on her neck, gently but firmly holding her down so she couldn't get up; like a powerful divine force holding her and making it impossible to get up" (Charles and Frances Hunter, Holy Laughter, p. 127 31 . Mat_12:39 Mar_8:11 32 1Ti_4:1 33 Mat_8:6-13 Luk_7:1-10 34 When Christ died, that some of the believers graves broke open, and they went home Mat_27:52-53. That same crowd that Crucified and witnessed all this, still went around in unbelief, persecuted and killed the followers of Jesus Christ. How much more proof do you need? I believe that mighty signs and wonders do not cut it. No mighty healings, and Music Bands and Power shows (There are shows of men of great strength who go to schools etc and say that they are powerful for Jesus, using the tricks of great strength to win people over to Christ) and any other forms of entertainment to attract the crowds into a "Christian" environment will do it. It is only faith that comes form hearing God's word preached. Rom_10:17 The Holy Spirit then comes and convicts your heart for the need to be saved, which you can either accept or reject. causing it. We also notice from the Scriptures that Satan comes across as an angel of light, his ministers are false and they also come across as ministers of righteousness (remember they are false ministers, presenting themselves as Pastors etc, yet they are bringing the doctrines of devils into the churches) "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. " 2Co_11:13-15 It does not take a lot of common sense then, to have noticed that Satan will come along and pretend to "heal people" and win them over and take their focus away and have them place their emphasis on the miracles of "faith healing" instead of focusing on the salvation of souls. What does it matter if the person is healed today if he later dies and goes to hell? Their "healing" meant nothing! "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Mat_16:26 I believe that mighty signs and wonders do not cut it. No mighty healings, and Music Bands and Power shows (There are shows of men of great strength will go to schools etc and say that they are powerful for Jesus, using the tricks of great strength to win people over to Christ) and any other forms of entertainment to attract the crowds into a "Christian" environment will do it. It is only faith that comes form hearing God's word preached. Rom_10:17 The Holy Spirit then comes along and convicts your heart for the need to be saved, which you can either accept or reject. Heb_10:26-29 In regards to speaking in tongues I am going to show you a study sheet that was given to me that makes false claims to support its views entitled "Why Christians should speak in tongues". This study was given to me by a Full Gospel Church member (Kokstad, 1991), author unknown. The statements are made, and after careful consideration, I studied each one and came up with the following conclusions. One must realize as we go through that these miracles did happen at that time, but not as he implies it , and we will discover that it is not for today. Read on and find out. Be aware that each statement he makes is to support the position as to "Why all Christians should speak in tongues"! It was foretold Isa_28:11-12 Isaiah 28 is a part of 6 sermons delivered by Isaiah. The verses speak of Ephraimite drunkenness and scoffing , verses v9&10 - gives reply of pro-Assyrian party of king Ahaz, verses 11-12 - Isaiah responds to their jibes, He states that: 1. God would offer peace and security 2. But they prefer to trust in Assyria 3. Therefore Isaiah foretells that they will learn of their mistake by the punitive hands of those who speak in a foreign language (tongue) Conclusion: This is not a prophecy of speaking in tongues (As is known today - ecstatic speaking) but one of Gods judgment upon the Ephraimite The New Testament declares the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy 1Co_14:21 "it is written..... This is a true quotation of Isa 28:11 Conclusion: But not in support of tongues. This means that God would use foreigners to bring the gospel to Israel, bringing proof through mighty powers and deeds, and yet Israel will not listen. Refer above. He tries to say that it was written, therefore it is Authoritive to his claims. The truth is, one can make the bible "fit" to suite any stand you make, regardless if it is true or not! All the original 120 in the upper room spoke in tongues Act_2:1-4 All were able to understand what was being said, they all were able to hear the gospel message preached in their own language and had the privilege to see the power of God working in their lives 36 but it doesnt support the need for us to speak in tongues to prove salvation. The Apostles were able to heal the sick and raise the dead so why do we need to speak in "tongues" as advocated by many to prove salvation (known as the "second blessing"? This leads me to ask "Why did they speak in other languages? " i) It took Christ 3 yrs. to teach the disciples about himself ii) He then told them to go out and spread the Gospel iii)With this, He gave them the ability to spread it by giving the ability to be able to speak to foreigners in their own language iv)and if they were not given the gift of "tongues" they were given the gift of interpretation so that the one prophecies(proclaimed the Gospel) and the other explains -interpret-pathar 37 v)thus to be able to spread the Gospel they were given the ability to speak in another known language and it was also sign of God working in others as a sign to the unbelieving Jew (or unbeliever) " Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe."1Co 14:22

The first gentiles to be saved received the Holy Ghost spoke in tongues Act_10:44-46 True statement, but we need to ask ourselves, why was this so significant that it is mentioned? We know: i) Peter was given the key to heaven.38 ii) Peter preached to the Jew and multitudes accept Christ. Acts 2 iii) It is only fitting that Peter shared the gospel to the Gentiles This was also a sign to the Jews God was also now dealing with the gentiles and the proof of this was in the out working of the holy ghost in their lives "can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the holy ghost, as well as we? acts 10:47 It is worthy of mentioning that, at that time, the Bible was being written and it was a transitional stage between the Old and New testament, consequently we will see mighty signs and deeds being done by the Apostles 2Cor 12:12 and to some of those who were empowered from on high to spread the gospel. However it was not upon everyone nor do we see it being perpetuated throughout Christendom, but rather it comes to an end. read the whole book of Acts and search history and see how far back you can trace it. Christ said believers would speak in tongues Mar_16:15-17 Christ said that they shall speak in a language that is foreign or unknown to the Believer, case in point.. all of a sudden they can speak in Chinese ..a known language (according to strongs Heb & Grk concordance "tongue"language- Grk "glossa", According to an oxford dictionary-language-method of expression vocal, signs by finger etc (in other words, people understand the words) 39 40 41 Conclusion The language spoken was understood by all refer Act_2:4-11 I must observe at this point as I want to at every other, If you are out at one point you are out with all the Scriptures on a particular topic. The author tries to make the Scriptures fit his view, if only he could understand that it was a known language and look at the purpose thereof, he would not be making false claims and being involved in "doctrines of the devil" This theme permeates throughout his material . incidentally, not all had been given this minor gift of speaking in tongues, God gave out according to His purposes 1Co_12:7-11, 1Co_12:28-30 Paul spoke in tongues,1Co_14:18 He spoke in a known language; in fact he could speak many foreign languages. It is wise to take note what Paul says a little later 42 "yet in the Church i had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue(glossa).Brethren, be not little children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men." What Paul is saying that speaking in tongues before people who don't understand the language serves no purpose!. Let me illustrate, to speak in Zulu to an English speaking congregations serves no purpose (for that matter, even if you had an interpreter, all that does is edify yourself, which is the sin of pride! This statement in of itself is true, but does not support the reason for you and I to speak in tongues today. Incidentally he mentions that he would rather preach and edify the Church. 43 25 years after Pentecost those who received the Holy Ghost spoke in tongues This is very significant as: 1. We see people who heard John's message of the coming of the Messiah 2. But never heard of the actual Gospel message of Christ, once they did, we see the effects of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit 3. We also see the necessity of the sharing of the Gospel as there are people who may have believed in God, but have never heard of Gospel of Christ.

Mat_16:19 "..they shall speak with new tongues..": or languages, not such as were new made, and had never been heard and known before; but foreign languages, such as they had never learned, or were able to speak, or understood before; and this not only did the apostles on the day of Pentecost, but even common believers at other times, Act_2:4 Act_10:45." John Gill Exposition of the entire Bible 40 These signs shall follow them that believe. These signs were what Paul calls the signs of an apostle (2Co_12:12). These miraculous powers were given to the authoritative messengers to accredit them as Christs representatives (Act_4:30-33; Act_5:12). But the signs were not displayed by any who did not believe, and even among the twelve some doubted (Mat_28:17). It is a mistake to suppose that these powers were automatically passed on to those who believed the messengers. That is not the thought. Such gifts were granted to some who became witnesses publicly (1 Corinthians 12:7-11), but the bestowal of gifts was according to the sovereign will of God" Harry Ironside notes on selected books 41 "they shall speak with new tongues, which they had never learned, or been acquainted with; and this was both a miracle (a miracle upon the mind), for the confirming of the truth of the gospel, and a means of spreading the gospel among those nations that had not heard it. It saved the preachers a vast labour in learning the languages; and, no doubt, they who by miracle were made masters of languages, were complete masters of them and of all their native elegancies, which were proper both to instruct and affect, which would very much recommend them and their preaching." Matthew Henry's commentary on the whole Bible 42 1Co_14:19-20 43 Our emphasis is to preach, not tongues! Our emphasis is on leading people to Christ, not demonstrating the gift of tongues. Christ came to seek and save those that are lost, not brag about the gifts that God has given. This can also apply to singing and how good a preacher you are or how funny you can be or what an excellent story teller you are. We are commanded to preach the Gospel of repentance!

The believers at Samaria spoke in tongues Act_8:17 The significance is: 1. God is known to be for the Jew and; 2. He is also for the gentile, and 3. He is also for the most hated and looked down upon Samaritans. This sign was for the Jew to understand that God is working in the lives of all of mankind, (it does not matter what colour or creed.) However it does not support the need for all Christians to speak in tongues, as this was a transitional period between the Old and New Testament and it was proof that God is doing a work in and among the Gentiles It is a gift to the church from God, 1Co_12:10 Christ had said that the comforter would come, and that he would empower members of the Church and give out gifts to whom he will. It is not ours to decided nor to inflict upon others, nor are we to promote all true believers to speak in tongues. If we look at Acts 1:8 , these Believers were promised the power of the Holy Spirit and we note the outcome shall be a witness. This witness speaks of a witness to the death, burial and resurrection (The Gospel), nothing more and nothing less. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. Mat_24:14 God has placed diversity of tongues in the church, 1Co_12:27-28 Wrong focus once again, the word tongues means language "glossa " Diversity means various or distribution, whatever way you look at it, at that time God had sent forth men to preach the Gospel, giving them, a gift to speak to foreigners in their language. it was understood and it was there to be used to preach the Gospel of Christ! This was given as it please Him, it was not to be prayed for nor desired, as we don't see everyone speaking in "tongues" there is only a mention of 120, yet in 1Co_15:6 we see mention of 500 people, yet no mention of mighty signs and deeds ..these signs and deeds only apply to an Apostle 2Co_12:12 44 Speaking in tongues is a direct line to God, 1Co_14:2 There is not a sound that has no significance. If you speak to God in a foreign language, those before you will not understand your words or meaning (only God will understand) consequently this serves no purpose nor does it edify those around you. The only person being edified is self. Self edification is not what Christ taught nor advocates. It is always about God and others, never self. Speaking in tongues edifies the believer, 1Co_14:4 Any form of works which we are involved in, and it edifies self, is the sin of pride. God hates pride and he tells us that those with pride will fall. Incidentally wherever there is pride, God is not in it! God is holy and does not look upon nor undertake anyone with sin. In fact he punishes it. Ask Satan! 45. So whoever wants to use this statement to support the reason why all Christian should speak in tongues, is leading people into the sin of pride and self edification. If the truth be told, Christians are not about the business of edifying self but of serving others. Christ gave the example in washing the feet of others to teach a lesson of servant hood and not self edification. Let God lift you up and not self. The moment there is an "I" in your conversation or thought. It automatically becomes the "i" in sin! Paul wanted every Christian to speak in tongues 1Co_14:5 Read this in context I would that ye all spake in tongues (glossa) but rather that ye all prophesied The reason for speaking in another language was to share the Gospel "prophecy". Paul mentions that it is good that you are able, now use it in the proper context. For that matter if you desire this spiritual gift, rather desire the gift of prophecy, so that you edify the hearer and the church. (So that people get saved) It is equal to prophecy if interpreted in the church 1Co_14:5 How does he come to this conclusion? If you are going to use the gift of speaking in tongues then allow another to interpret. This is of course if the person speaking in tongues is prophesying (proclaiming the Gospel , not any new revelation), then those who are able to understand will hear and understand, while the others who don't, will have a need for an interpreter. But equal to prophecy I disagree as Paul advocates that he would rather prophecy than

The signs and wonders recorded in the book of Acts were done by the apostles (Acts 2:43; 3:6-8; 4:33; 5:12, 15; 9:40-41; 19:12; 28:3-5, 7-9). If any believer could perform these miraculous wonders indiscriminately, the sign of an apostle would be rendered ineffective.... When Dorcas died in Joppa, the believers there could not raise her from the dead. It was only when Peter the apostle came to Joppa from Lydda that Dorcas was raised up" Acts 9:36-43 " David Cloud Fundamental Baptist Information Service

speak in tongues; for tongues edifies the believer (himself) rather than the church 1Co_14:4-5. You should by now, conclude with me, that this is the sin of self glorification (pride) Praying in tongues is also praying in the spirit Rom_8:26-28 He is reading into scripture rather than taking out of Scripture. he is trying to make this fit into his view as to why all Christians should speak in tongues 1) this speaks of the Holy Spirit helping us with our prayers for we dont know what to pray for, nor do we say what we really mean 2) why?-God truly knows our hearts and mind and knows what we really mean thus the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groanings and utterings which we dont know about nor really understand ourselves .This section of scripture doesnt reinforce the above statement and the Spirit spoken of is not mans spirit but the Holy Spirit - he is implying here that it is the spirit of man in this ecstatic speech that is groaning and uttering which is not understood by man .. Consequently a person can speak gibberish and as far as the author is concerned. God knows what he means. 46 It is a sign to Unbelievers, 1Co_14:21-22 We need then to ask ourselves- why and for what purpose? 1) it was a sign for the unbelieving nation of Israel that the Messiah did come as prophesied by the prophets of old (according to scripture) 2) it showed proof that God is dealing people other than Israel 3) its purpose was to demonstrates Gods power in peoples lives and 4) it was used to spread the gospel and prove the power of the gospel through mighty deeds and signs, this was used during the transitional period between the Old and New testament. Conclusion: the word tongue-glossa means a known language, with this in mind it is good to heed what else Paul says on the topic in1Co_14:26-40 God said he would speak to the people in this fashion, Isa_28:11 True observation, however, this is not in support of why all Christians should speak in tongues, nor does he inform you that this is a warning that the Ephraimites (another tongue) will deal with the Israelites and God will use them to punish Israel. The prediction was true and it did come to pass. .. This is old history and not applicable today! It is the rest and refreshing, Isa_28:11-12 He is making up a religious term that he will use to explain the reasons for tongues. The author does not inform you rather that 1) there is only one kind of rest and refreshing available 2) and that is the acceptance of Jesus Christ as lord and Saviour 3) only then can one have peace Phil 4:7 "and the peace of God ,which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. This has nothing to do with speaking in tongues re statement 1 Paul commanded the church to not forbid the speaking in tongues, 1Co_14:39 True statement, wrong context: 1. Paul did not say that God had given this particulargift so that they should not use it, but rather that they should for- a) God gets glorified b) the Unbelievers see the evidence of the outpouring of the holy spirit c) The gospel is spread to all the corners of the earth (through known language) 2) Through proper verbal communication people will understand who God is, and they will be saved My Conclusion I did not at any time, come across any verse or verses that said that I must speak in tongues, nor did I see any that implied that the gift of tongues is for today. All I saw is verses taken out of context, made to fit and support an unbiblical view and a refusal to accept the fact that tongues had ceased. Also there was no acknowledgement or inference that 1 Corinthians was a letter of condemnation of wrong doing in the Church at Corinth. Paul had sent the letter to correct wrong behaviour and practice. The services were disorderly in regards to speaking in tongues and woman were to keep quiet and not usurp the authority of man.47 It would be wise to go and read Act_2:1-11 and make special note of verses 6,7,8 4) and 1Co_13:8 "charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease (pauo-cut off); whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. and verse 9&10 for we know in part and prophecy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. We know that at the time of the Apostles the bible was not complete as it is today (that which is perfect) We also see that tongues etc. has no more use today as the Word is
I have read of an account in John Mac Arthur's book "Charismatics" that a man swore Jesus Christ and the whole church said "amen" praise the Lord. I wonder which "Lord" was being glorified here? 47 Women were a cause or part of this problem then, as they show themselves to be the main instigators of the speaking in tongues or charismatic movement (The main proponents of the Charismatic movement are women). Satan deceived Eve in the garden as he is deceiving Eve in the Churches today!

sufficient in itself. That faith comes from Gods word Romans 10:17 and it is faith that counts for your righteousness Rom_4:9 Mighty signs and deeds does not save, even if one rose from the dead, people still will not believe. Lk 16:31. The tongues mentioned in the book of Acts and of Corinth, was a known language, so why are the tongues different today? Why has history been silent all these years? Tongues as is known today suddenly crops up at Charles Parhams Bible school in Topeka, Kansas, in 1901, and at William Seymours Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles in 1906..Why has God been silent all these years? Is Satan not deceiving the Church? Is Satan not detracting the individual away from salvation by grace and pointing them to gifts that are not from God? 2Co_6:1118. My personal view is that Satan is out to deceive the Church and the individual. It is to those that seek a "sign" that are been drawn in, we see the Churches are full of people who are succumbing to his devices and doctrines. Satan is deceiving the world is evident, let me illustrate my point. The proponents use terms like: second wave" and Third wave" or infer second blessings etc. that are not Scriptural and have no historical or biblical base. 48 That they are false teachers is evident, The Bible warns us many times of these men and woman.49 It is strange to see people being deceived, do they not know that the Holy Spirit speaks Scripture and that He works in accordance to Scripture? Do they not know that the bible is complete? There are no new Revelations? The Holy Spirit will not add, subtract or detract from God's Word? God's word is unchanging! Have they no understanding? In the book of Hebrews, Israel, after seeing and experiencing God's mighty signs and deeds first hand, still not believe.Heb_3:7-12 .They all died in the wilderness for their unbelief. Signs, wonders and deeds do not make a believer of a person, but faith in Christ! Christians are encouraged to try the spirit Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." 1Jn_4:1 Wow! I am told that not all who profess to be God's Prophet, Servant, Pastor, Messenger, Minister or even a normal Believer, is a true Believer in Christ! That they can be false and I am to "try the spirit". In other words test them! When we deal with spiritual issues, within the church, without the church, as individuals or wherever we find ourselves we are to "try the spirit", we are told that there are many false prophets, and we are not just to believe any "prophet, but "try" them. We have seen that Satan is a counterfeiter, he comes across as an "angel of light" and his Ministers transform themselves as ministers of righteousness, these ministers will come performing mighty deeds and wonders, God says they are false. We are called to be wise as wolves, yet innocent as sheep. In the Old testament time, under the Mosaic Law, if a prophet or dreamer of dreams used signs and wonders to take a person away from God, you were to cast the first stone and stone him to death Deu_13:1-11 It is astounding to note how many people require a sign or mighty deed before they will believe, Christ said that they have the sign of Jonah. He will not and He never has, attracted people to himself with mighty signs and deeds, what He did do was to preach " From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. " Mat_4:17 "Not True!" I hear you scream, "For Christ had healed many, raise people from the dead, walked on water, fed thousands; so how can you say that all He did was preach?" The miracles that Christ performed were there for four reasons, namely: 1.To fulfill prophecy Luk_24:44 2. Authenticate that He was the Son of God and Messiah John 14:9-11 3. He had compassion on those who suffered different maladies Mat_15:32 4. Strengthen the faith of the twelve Disciples. 50
48 "Third wave: This is the title given to a new movement which is explained by some of it's leaders as follows: 'Thousands of traditional, evangelical, denominational churches are now experiencing an outpouring of God's spirit in their churches through supernatural healing. This phenomenon has come to be described as 'the third wave.' The 'first wave' came with the Pentecostal movement at the turn of the century, and the second with the charismatic movement at mid-century. With reports coming in from all over America supporting 'the third wave,' many Christian leaders are seeking theological and operational understanding on this subject. A series of conferences is planned during 1987 to 'explore how traditional churches involved in the third wave affirm the ministry of Pentecostals and Charismatics, but choose to retain their own denominational and theological distinctives.' This is but another example of the many STRANGE MIXTURES of truth and error being promoted today by compromising leaders who have lost their spiritual discernment" (Foundation, January/February 1987) Extracted David Cloud Encyclopedia 2006 49 1. How are we to "try the spirit"? There is only three ways: 1. God's word is The Judge 2.The Prophets are to judge 3. The congregation is to judge. God's word is The judge All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works 2 Tim 3:16-17. God's word is the final authority, although I mentioned that the Pastors and the church are also judges, they are to judge in accordance to God's word. Not tradition, not feelings, not personal views, or not even based upon a majority vote.. It is God's word only! Prove all things; hold fast that which is good51 "In the Old Testament times, the Scripture was the sole authority for faith and practice and every teaching was to be compared to it and every teaching that was contrary to it was to be rejected. The Scripture is the sole and final test of truth. Anything that is spoken that is not in accordance with the Scripture must be rejected as darkness and those who speak such things are not following the light. This is the infallible test. David Cloud The Prophets are to judge And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets 1Co_14:32 This is where, man preaches, and the other Preachers judge. 52 They will judge, if it is in accordance to Scripture, that his interpretation is correct in regards to the verses he has expressed and any other comments that he makes is befitting and in keeping with the Word of God. That His expressions are not deceiving, deviant nor misleading. To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them Isaiah 8:20. This mentions that God's word is the final Authority and any other is a lie and they are not of God. God is Truth, His Word is Truth. Consequently we are to "try the spirit" whether it is false or not, by Gods word. In Timothy we see that Preachers are to give themselves over to reading, exhortation and Doctrine 1Ti_1:1 Timothy was a "preacher boy", he was not commanded to deal with mighty deeds and signs and wonders, but rather to reading God's word and to study it. "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.' 2Ti_2:15 It is this study and reading and Doctrine that will keep a preacher from becoming a false preacher. A minister of Satan will discard the Scriptures or will teach, interpret and preach falsely. I was reading an account by David Cloud and came across this bit of false doctrine, 53 where the Author (Steve McVey) doesnt know the basic and fundamental difference between "relationship" and "fellowship". His following is large and his false teachings reach untold millions for the cause of Satan. Christian, you are to try the spirit! You cannot plead ignorance, when God has provided you with His completed Word and we have seen men and woman, who by
daily and even then, we were told that they understood none of these things. The Lord had to come back from the dead, and teach them for a further forty days. 51 1Th_5:20-21 . "Here the Spirit of God gives two interconnected commandments. Prophesying is not to be despised but all things are to be tested. This is what we see in 1 Cor. 14:29: Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. In the apostolic churches prophesying involved both preaching and revelation, but the revelation aspect ceased with the completion of the canon of Scripture. Paul defined prophesying as speaking to men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort 1 Cor. 14:3, which is a ministry that continues in the churches throughout the age. The chief point of 1 Thess. 5:20-21 is that all preaching and teaching must be proven by Scripture and only that which is found to be in accordance with Scripture is to be received." D Cloud 52 "Meaning either that the doctrines which the prophets deliver, the explanations they give of passages of Scriptures, the revelations they declare, are subject to the examination, judgment, and censure of other prophets; who have a right to try and judge them, either according to a more clear revelation they may have, or rather according to the sure word of prophecy, the Scriptures of truth; and indeed they are subject to the trial and judgment of the whole church,.." John Gill "And in regard to prophesying, let them speak two or three, not a large number in one service, and let the others judge; that is, in the sense of discerning; they are to weigh all carefully before God and compare it with the Word. ...Our Lord Himself urged the people to search the Scriptures. The preacher is to speak, the people are to listen, and then to compare what they hear with the Word. ... Harry Ironside 53 Dont get bogged down in a faulty understanding of 1 John 1:9 when the rest of the New Testament teaches that our sins have been absolutely forgiven--past, present, and future. ... The idea that were out of fellowship with God when we do wrong is a lie. Its one of those clichs. It sounds good, but its not biblical. There is nothing you can do to put yourself out of fellowship with God. ... faith have stood for the cause of Christ and His word, who have occasionally lost limb and life for the truth Hebrews 11 The congregation is to judge It must be noted up front that it is not the majority that rules, however, we see that the Christians at the Berean church "searched the Scripture to see if it is so". The Church is to diligently search the Scripture, hear the message from God and confirm the truth of it all, via the Scriptures only. Act_17:11. The Lord said "my sheep hear my voice and follow me" Those that are truly of Christ will hear what His word says and obey, "We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error." 1Jn_4:6. Those who refuse to listen and follow after Christs words is not of the truth but false workers of Satan. "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;"1Ti 4:1 "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. Rom 16:17 "For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. :30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them." Act 20:29 ". it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. :19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 1Jn 2:18-19 Christ's purpose "How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? " Job_25:4 Job asked a very pertinent question, How then can man be justified with God? He cannot on his own! It is only through God that this is possible. 54 We know from the Scriptures that the sacrifices and blood of animals cannot cleanse or rid you of the inherited sin of Adam, nor your own personal transgressions against God. The blood of animals has no ability or power to save. So what was the purpose behind the Law and Sacrifices? We are told that it was a schoolmaster, teaching and pointing to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and it taught God's expectation of man, and it showed us exactly what He meant and said about Him being holy. . Peter informs us that God had foreordained (before the world began) His only begotten Son to die for the sins of the world, once and for all. God has provided a Saviour and a means to reconcile man to God. It is man's for the taking. If he wants it! 55 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Rom_10:13 Our Lord Jesus Christ stated the following: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, "Luk_4:18. We see Scripture after Scripture referring to Jesus Christ and His death. 56 It was spoken of in time past, and that He had to go to Jerusalem to die for the sins of the world. "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. " Heb 2:9 "And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;" Rev_5:9 Jesus Christ came for the remissions of sin, that is say, man can be pardoned of all sin 57 He came to be the ransom for many, and He came to destroy the works of Satan and sin In His death we have the opportunity of being found righteous before God. We are reconciled to God through Him, and lastly that in Him; the curse of God has been removed from us. 58 There is so much more to say, but this is not a complete work, but rather a

smidgen of what the bible does say on the matter. Read your bible to find all the answers! There are three things I will point out: 1. Christ did not come to condemn the world 2. He came to save the world 3. He sent you and I to share the Gospel with the world God had a plan. In His foreknowledge, He knew that Adam would sin, and His character of holiness and justice would not allow Him to have any part of anything sinful. His character of mercy and love and longsuffering would play a part in pardoning man because of the inherited sin of Adam and his own transgressions (breaking God's laws) This was not possible by anything man could possibly do or say, The payment had to be of a pure nature, acceptable to a holy God whos holiness demands justice, consequently God sent His only begotten Son to die in the place of man, and anyone who would accept God's offer of reconciliation would then be pardoned and forgiven. Christ did not come to condemn the world "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." Joh_3:16-17 Here is the issue at hand. Christ did not come to condemn the world, because it is condemned already, but to save. He offers everlasting life for all and sundry. His message was simple "From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Mat_4:17 he sent out His disciples with a similar simple message, and Paul had a similar message. 59 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." Luk 24:46 He came to save the world It was His plan from the beginning and that is what he meant when He was on the cross just before He died, and said "..It is finished.." Joh_19:30. It is through the shedding of His blood that God provided remissions for sin 60 Christ did not come for a political overthrow as the World council of Churches teaches 61 , nor did He come to sort out social ills. (Lack of food, lack of employment, raise the dead nor heal the world of their sicknesses Luk_12:14 ) He came to save the world! For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luk_19:10 "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Mat 11:28-30 He sent you and I to share the Gospel with the world "And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. " Mat 4:19 Our Lord Jesus Christ said to Peter, if he would follow Him, Peter would not be fishing for fish, but rather, he would be fishing for the souls of men. This tells me that, anyone who is a Believer in Jesus Christ, will be a soul winning. In others words his focus will be on the soul of a man. It is like any fisherman, He plans his trip, he prepares his fishing tackle, he spends all of his time, money and effort pursuing his goal of catching a fish. Many times he will look for others to accompany him in his goal of fishing. Well Christian, is this you? The Lord said, "will make you. The reverse of that coin is also true, if you are not fishing, you cannot be a follower of Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ demands all of you "And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it" Mar 8:34-35 The Lord looked out across the people and said that the harvest is plenteous but the labourers few, this was the backdrop to his official calling of the twelve to become His Disciples, and we see them named 62 however we immediately see them commissioned as Apostles, this means sent ones. The Lord calls and He sends. If you are

called of God, you are also sent of God. This touches everyone; we see a general command to the church in to go out. This is known as the Great Commission this is the task and focus of the Church 63 . It is the responsibility and focus of the church to teach the world about the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (known as the Gospel Mar_16:15 ) once "saved" it is also the responsibility of the Churches to make Disciples of them. Where they in turn, will go out and "teach all nations". God went one step further, not only did He call, send and command, He also empowered. In Acts 1:8 we see the promise of the Holy Spirit and we see the out pouring, or the work, or the effect of the Holy Spirit in the Believers life. He shall be a witness to a lost and dying world; the Holy Spirit empowers the person to be an active, verbal witnesses in regards to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (The Gospel) Not healing, not speaking in tongues, not slain in the spirit or any other "gift" that is espoused by many. Christ's focus was to save a lost and dying world, He dies for the world, He calls for repentance and He invites people to accept Him. Those that are His, are called and sent and empowered, to do His commands, which is to teach and witness to the lost world. Any other focus, is not of Him and is carnal. Jesus Christ was not sent to condemn the world but to save it; he focused upon the cross and knew through His sacrificial death, that He would overcome everything that was done through the Temptation of Satan, including the sin of Adam. Before His ascension, Christ commissioned the Church to go out and spread the "Gospel". That Jesus Christ, Died, was buried and rose again according to Scripture and in accordance to God's promise to Adam in the Garden of Eden Ge 3:15. Christ fulfilled His purpose and sent the Church to do the same! That is YOU and I! Christ's promise of mighty works "Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached." Luk 7:22 When we search the Scriptures to see how many really followed after Jesus Christ we see the number of five hundred appear and another in the book of Acts of one hundred and twenty. 64 .When we looked at numbers and we assume that these are true followers and Believers in Jesus Christ, the numbers are small. Especially when we read of different accounts of the feeding of the five thousand and the feeding of the seven thousand, and the whole country side following Him wherever He went, one would presume the numbers of Believers would be great. It is also interesting to note that, not everyone who followed after Christ, stayed on as Believers or followers. The majority who where there, not there because of Christ or the miracles, but rather, what they could get out of Him 65 Right, we conclude that Jesus came from a miraculous birth, that it was predicted and fulfilled according to Scripture. He came showing great signs and wonders that have never been seen before, in fact He says that God the Father bestowed this upon Him to show that He came form God and that He is God "But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. ' Joh_5:36 "Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent" Joh_6:29 He also added to this, by preaching and teaching that He has come to call sinners to repentance and that He offers remission for sins in His name. 66 But He goes one step further and says, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. " Joh_14:12 Wow!. Christ says that we will do greater works than Him. Wait a bit. If we can raise the dead, heal the sick, know peoples thoughts and minds, why have we not seen this. Why are people sick and dying? How is it that we have wars and broken marriages because of miscommunication etc?. What is He saying? What does He mean by "greater works". For we know by casual observation, we cannot do these things, nor does history produce any such evidence. This not such a big dilemma as it may appear. We see that the "greater works", can only happen after Christs death and resurrection. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also;

The church consists of saved Believers and it is a congregation or coming together, the Church is not a building but people. 1Co_15:6 Act_1:15 65 Luk_12:1 Joh_6:66 Mat_8:20 Luk_9:59 Mat_19:22 Joh_6:26 66 Luk_5:32 Luk_24:47 Joh_5:39-40

and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. " Joh_14:12 The only works we see greater than Jesus Christ, is seen when, Peter preached immediately after the Holy Ghost came upon the Apostles and three thousand people got saved. 67 In fact it is calculated that the Church in Jerusalem was about twenty five thousand strong. And if we look at some modern Churches today, who report of a following of six to ten thousand. 68 If we look at the number of those that accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour in His time and if we look at the first number after His Ascension, we see a "greater works". Christ came to seek and save the lost. His purpose was to save those that seek after Him, who realize their sinfulness and recognize a need for a Saviour. The Apostles went around with signs and wonders before His death, but we did not hear of any salvation experience of any significance. However, at His death we see immediately three thousand beleieved and with His promise that the Holy Spirit "shall make you a witness" this all came to pass. It was relevant then, as it is today. The purpose of the Church is to share Jesus Christ with people, and we will experience "greater works". How does my faith increase in God? "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. " Rom_10:17 Your faith does not come by miracles; nor does your faith increase through miracles. If you would read Hebrews Chapter 11 (Known as the Faith Chapter) You will notice that none of them were reached by God the father though miracles, wonders, signs and deeds. It is Faith in the God the Father; It is faith in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. You will notice the words "believed God", and this was counted for righteousness Heb_11:6 Tells us is that we come to God by faith, and it is only those that diligently seek Him, will be rewarded. It is not mighty signs, wonders and deeds, or in the new terminology used today, faith healing, slain in the spirit, laughing in the spirit, speaking in tongues etc. We see the people gathering around Jesus Christ, they saw his miracles of raising the dead, healing and feeding of the multitudes and sat under His teachings Mat_5:1-12 They glorified Him on the road to Jerusalem 69 , The very same crowd said "crucify Him" Mar_15:13-14 . When Jesus died on the cross, we see another miracle which is not normally mentioned; the graves of some of the Saints cracked open and they went home. People rose from the dead! Yet, the same crowd that crucified Christ, went around and persecuted the believers and the Apostles and even went to the extreme of killing them .They did not Believe in Jesus Christ, nor did they believe after the miracle of some who rose from the dead Mat_27:50-52 There is the account of the Rich man and Lazarus in Luk_16:28-31 The Richman asked Abraham to send someone to speak to his five brothers and warn them. Abraham responded with "they have Moses and the Prophets, let them hear", The Rich man asked him to send someone from the dead, and he responded with If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. Christ rose from the dead, others rose from the dead, the sick were healed and still they would not believe. So how does my faith increase? What is the purpose behind mighty signs, wonders and deeds? Simply stated; To authenticate the Messenger was from God and the message is God's message. Moses approached Israel with signs and deeds 70. God had been silent for 400years 71 and then Moses came along and many other Prophets. The warned and the begged and they cried, yet Israel did not listen and the prophecies came to pass. Then God became silent again, then out of the blue came John the Baptist "And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Mat_3:2 and he came baptizing with the message of remissions of sins and with water 72. His responsibility ultimately was to point to the Messiah. 73 Christ said that His works pointed to the hand of God upon Him and that He was the Messiah. 74 . He gave power to the Apostles and He sent them out with the message repent for the kingdom of

God is at hand, however, the signs and miracles ended with the Apostles 75 The other signs and gifts of knowledge and prophesying God message and the gift of speaking in tongues ceased, when that which is perfect had come 1Co_13:6-10 . The letter of I Corinthians was written to the Corinthians, which formed part of the "bible", the bible was being completed during their life time. When the Perfect word of God was written by holy men who were moved by the Spirit of God, 76 we ended up with God's completed and powerful Word. We need no more that this. The Holy Spirit speaks through God's word and he works in accordance to God's word. He does not add to, nor subtract from it 77. We are told in Romans that your faith comes from God's word Rom_10:17. No more and no less. God's word is like a two edged sword! For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Heb_4:12. God the Holy Spirit draws you to God, God the Son saves you if you want Him to Romans 10:13, and this saving knowledge can only come from God's revelation..His Word! There is no other way for your faith to increase but by God's word! "The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: 2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. 3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: ." Rev 1:1-3 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."Joh_5:24 "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." Rev 22:18-19 If any Church or person preaches or teaches anything else but Jesus Christ, they are false! "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. "2Pe_2:1 " Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." 1Jn_4:1 "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." Mat_7:15 " And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many." Mat_24:11 "For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. " Mat_24:24 " And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God" 1Co_2:1-5
