Bird Unit

Day Lesson Materials


-TRN Chart -Sticky Notes -Bird Beaks book -Bird Beaks pg. 25 for each child 1. Tell students we will be learning about birds. 2. Numbered heads together: What do you think you know about birds? 3. Model writing one thing you think you know 1 about birds on a sticky note and illustrating it, then adding it to the T part of the chart. 4. Students write what they think they know and illustrate it then add it to the chart. 5. Tell students you are going to read a book about bird beaks and you want them to look and listen for how bird beaks look different and can be used differently. Read Bird Beaks to the class. 6. If time, have students complete Bird Beaks pg. 25 on their own. Bird Buffet Part 1 1. Engage with student and bowl of water and utensils. 2. Hold up a picture of each type of bird with each station and model how to use the materials at each station. 2 Station 1 Egret: gummy fish in a cup of water, skewer, clothes pin, straw Station 2 Eagle: dog treats on a plate, knife, spoon, clothes pin

Station 3 Parrot: malt balls-gumballs on a plate, nutcracker, knife, fork Station 4 Toucan: Grape or other small fruit, tongs, clothes pin, spoon Station 5 Flamingo: puffed rice in a bowl of water, fork, spoon, straw Station 6 Hummingbird: water in a graduated cylinder, straw, skewer, knife 3. Show students the journal that they will use in tomorrows exploration. Read the top of the page and question 1. Show the Bird Buffet page and explain the words on the page. Tell students that they will be put into six groups and they will need to help each other complete the bird buffet journals. Show them where each station will be and explain when they will rotate (timer). Bird Buffet Part 2 1. Hand out journals, remind students how to fill them out. Explain how to handle materials at each station. Check for understanding: which station will they start at, what direction will they rotate in, what will their voice level sound like, how will they move around the room and use the tools. Divide the class into six groups and assign them their starting station. Allow groups to have 3 minutes at each station. Tell students it is okay if they do not have time to finish at each station

Discuss these words as a class. Whisper to your shoulder partner one thing we learned about bird feathers yesterday. Tell students that we will be learning about bird homes today. Give them each three sticky notes and tell them to write down one or more new thing that they learn about birds through the PowerPoint. Have students share the new thing that they learned about birds after the PowerPoint with the class and add it to the TRN chart. If time, allow students to design/draw their own bird homes using what they learned from the PowerPoint.
