Harvest Festival Lesson Plan

Learning Objectives: To read, speak and write about Harvest Festival in the UK. Skill/Grammar: Reading, speaking, writing Preparation Time: 10 minutes Completion Time: 90 minutes Age/Level: Adults/Pre-Intermediate

Warm-Up (10 minutes)


Write the words SPRING SUMMER AUTUMN WINTER on four large cards and place them on four tables in different parts of the room. Ask the students to circulate and stop at the table which they prefer and sit down. Tell them Discuss with the people at your table, why you chose this table. Allow some time for them to talk. Then ask them What objects would you put on this table to reflect the season? Allow more time for them to talk. Ask for one person in each group to tell the class what they discussed and decided in their group.

Reading, Speaking and Writing Practice (15 minutes)


Ask students if anyone knows what Harvest Festival is? Get ideas. Then tell students, they will read about it to find out more. However, they do not have the whole text, so they will need to work in pairs to get the information. Give out What is Harvest Festival? and ask them to complete the task.

Vocabulary Practice (10 minutes)


Now give out Harvest Worksheet. This gives practice of vocabulary related to harvest and harvest festivals. Check with the Harvest Worksheet Key.

Speaking and writing Practice 1 (30 minutes)
Now say to the class: As you read earlier, Harvest Festival is not a holiday (day off work) in the UK. Imagine it has been made a holiday. Work in groups to plan an event to celebrate Harvest Festival. You must decide on: Where it will be What you will do/special activities or events Who you will invite Times, etc. Produce an invitation or poster Plan a presentation to the class Monitor and assist as they work.

Speaking Practice 2 (20 minutes)


Ask each group to give a short presentation to the class.

Closure (5 minutes)
The students can decide on which event they would most like to attend.
