Favourite Hobbies Board Game Teacher Notes

Level: Elementary +
Time: 40 min
Language Focus: Talking about hobbies and preferences using like/love/hate + (verb + ing)

• Print the Hobbies Board Game, Verb Cards and Counters so that each
Preparation (5-10 min) small group or pair has a board, set of cards and a counter per player.
• Cut out the cards and counters for each group.

Procedure Time
Ask the students if they know any of the key verbs for expressing preference. Elicit
these ensuring that the verbs love/really like/like/don’t like/hate are all highlighted. Draw
a scale on the board using smiley faces and pictures to illustrate the meaning.

As a whole class, scaffold the students saying an example sentence from the game
board, e.g. I like watching television. Review like + (verb + ing) and drill the pronunciation
of the target language.
Explain the rules of the game and model an example.
Game rules: Students take it in turns to roll the dice and move that number of spaces
on the board. When they land on a picture, they need to form a sentence about their

preferences using the verb cards. There are also spaces such as ‘go forward one space’
‘go back two spaces’ and ‘roll again’.
Monitor students and make notes for delayed error correction.

Extension activity ideas

Students write a paragraph about their favourite hobbies. (10 min)
