sustainable design workshop in Lebanon

[addressed to students of architecture fluent in English] T h e w o r k s h o p

The Department of Architecture of Notre Dame University in Beirut organizes a workshop on sustainable design between 16-30.4.07. The event is part of the Architecture Design VI course, attended by 12 senior local students. The workshop topic is about getting familiar with sustainability concepts in practice. The project brief is under preparation, but it should refer to the design of a small structure in full detail (bus stop shelter, mountain cabin, beach bar, etc.) employing environmental sustainability ideas fit for local conditions. A key feature of the proposal-s should be to incorporate low-tech construction techniques (DIY), given that the final scheme-s will be constructed by the students themselves after the workshop in order to acquire practical experience. Besides the workshop, there should be parallel events, including visits to local architectural & artistic attractions and a public lecture by Thanos N. Stasinopoulos titled Towards a Hangover Architecture on developing environmentally sustainable design principles as a protagonist in the post-consumerist future. A small number of foreign students are welcome, with free accommodation offered in a guest house or by local students; special low-rate hotel rooms are also available. The event offers a good opportunity for combining (a) a hands-on exercise in a highly interesting topic with (b) getting acquainted to a foreign yet very hospitable academic environment.
