Monday, there was an announcement of $700,000 from the provincial government to help forest companies create jobs by turning their waste wood into highvalue bio-products. The money is in response to recommendations from the Bio-Economy Committees report, which highlights the need for govt to take a leading role in developing the bio-economy. FPInnovations, the world's largest private, non-profit forest research institute to which the funds have been directed will help industry identify cost-effective fibre available for new projects and also assess mills in the BC Interior for opportunities to add innovative bio-product streams to their current operations. These products could be a combination of energy, green chemicals and other bio-materials, which can reduce waste, create jobs and improve the mills' bottom lines. Evidently, products being made from wood fibre today include renewable fuels, textiles, light-weight plastics, food additives, pharmaceuticals and oil. On the drawing board are things like bioactive paper products, including facial masks that deactivate viruses; composites for airplane structures; jet fuel additives; and a substitute for petroleum products used to manufacture rubber for tires. BC has more than 200 bio-products and bio-energy companies. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Develt predicts the bio-economy will contribute 10 + new drugs a year by 2015, and 10% of chemical production by 2030. BC's renewable energy sector is the 3rd largest renewable energy sector in the world, behind Germany & California. [Ed.: BCs forests are touted as one of the world's largest available supplies of biomass, much of it wood from trees killed by the mountain pine beetle. And closer to home, Merritts new bio-energy incinerator has identified the fuel for 20 years of its projected 30-year lifespan presumably thats how long it will take to burn all the beetle-kill. Then theyll be looking for something else to burn. I hate to think that BCs boreal forests will someday become the substitute for fossil fuels. Look where that got us!Kim Leclair]

Because the track of the new moon changes from year to year, Chinese New Year can begin anytime between late January and mid-February. Chinese New Year festivities are in full swing, now for the next few days. In ancient China, the celestial Dragon represents an emperor and power. Today, it is the ultimate auspicious symbol signifying success and happiness. People born under the Dragon are passionate, brave and self-assured. At their best they are pioneering spirits; at their worst, they epitomize the old adage: Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. Dragons are generous with their resources, a tendency that at its most negative can reflect a foolhardy attitude towards money. But Dragons in general are blessed with good fortune. They are smart, enterprising and have a wicked sense of humor. They have a natural flair for fashion and are the people to consult if you want to catch up on the latest trends. This Chinese New Year 2012 ushers in the Water Dragon. Water exerts a calming influence on the Dragons innate fire. Water Dragons are more open to other peoples opinions than other Dragons which gives them the ability to channel their personal charisma into real leadership qualities. It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! I may have been in Continent, but I don't remember whatcountry I was in.
