Geographic map
Make a rough geographic map of the locality that you visited. It doesn’t have to be accurate or
detailed. Just trace out the geography and add important landmarks. You can use icons to
represent different features of the community. If possible, use different colours for different types
of organization (ex: factories, shops, housing, government buildings, etc) This map will help inform
your social action projects (how the place might be improved)
Community of interest map
Mapping and identifying community concerns/ key themes which have emerged (social issues)
such as transport, drainage, health, space, jobs, freedom, drugs, etc)

Reflection
A brief explanation to/your thoughts on the key points presented in the maps.
Things you would like to know more about.
Your recommendations for the sustainable development of the community.

Dong Xuan Market is a bustling and famous market in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. As the largest
market in Northern Vietnam, with a history dating back hundreds of years, Dong Xuan Market is
one of the markets with the most cultural and historical value in the city. To this day, the market
continues to thrive as a bustling hub of trade, with large numbers of buyers and sellers coming
from everywhere. The mindmap of Dong Xuan Market reveals several key concerns affecting the
community.

The main gate of the market is on Dong Xuan Street, where many street vendors and taxis,
motorbike taxis gather, ready to flag down customers. This area often experiences congestion,
parking, and accessibility issues, which are key concerns for both vendors and visitors. Inside the
market, the stalls are crammed together, leaving just enough space for one person to walk
through. Overcrowding affects both vendors and customers, limiting expansion opportunities for
businesses and creating a cramped shopping environment. It even increases the risk of fire and
makes it difficult to evacuate in an emergency. The limited space, along with the dim lighting,
creates a stifling and tense atmosphere. In many areas, sanitation and waste management are
significant problems, contributing to health risks. The market's infrastructure also struggles with
flooding, especially during the rainy season, which can disrupt daily operations. Theft and
pickpocketing are frequent concerns, especially for tourists. The proliferation of counterfeit goods
and price jacking also frustrates many visitors.

I would like to learn more about how effective are current government programs in addressing
these isues and how involved is the local community in decision-making processes concerning the
development and regulation of the market. For sustainable development of the market, I
recommend investing in better infrastructure, particularly in space and transport and implement
more comprehensive waste management and public health services to provide a modern market
and reduce environmental impacts. In detail, expanding vendor spaces and redesigning the
market layout will create a more organized and spacious environment, benefiting both vendors
and customers. Improved public transport like bus routes and parking zones, along with
pedestrian-friendly zones and more rosswalks, can reduce congestion and enhance accessibility. A
comprehensive waste management system and regular sanitation checks should be prioritized to
maintain cleanliness and reduce health risks. Implementing stricter regulations on counterfeit
goods and scams will also foster a safer shopping environment. Enhanced security measures such
as more frequent polices patrols and comminity policing wold help address theft and
pickpocketing issues, promoting safety for the market and its people. These recommendations
aim to create a well- organized, sustainable community for both vendors and visitors.
