What types of magazine and target audiences has IPC been associated with over the years?

1.
The IPC has had links with magazines that focus on the interests of the population. They mainly have an interest in Hobbies with magazines such as the Caravan Stamp Magazine and Amateur Photographer. They also focus on sporting magazines that will appeal to men predominantly such as Rugby World and World Soccer. Later in the 1900s the IPC took advantage of the flourishing music scene and became involved with NME therefore appealing to a wider range.

In the same decade they also focused on the television scene which was also becoming popular by releasing the TV Times. By doing this they are increasing there overall readership and again gaining readers. Finally they even target specific women with the magazine Womans Own which would later get dropped. Even taking advantage of the market of women they will appeal and will get an increased readership for the period of time.

2. Why might IPC be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine? What sorts of genres of music/types of magazines might they be likely to publish? Why might alternative publishers like Bauer be appropriate?
IPC have had many different magazines from throughout there time in the industry. By working with NME they would be able to establish a name for the magazine and by having a long running partnership with many magazines they would be able to work well with NME and make them into a strong competitor in there market. IPC would be likely to release many magazines on to the market due to the fact that they aim to have such a wide range target audience. It would be highly appropriate for the to release a main stream POP magazine due to the fact they have magazines such as Now which focus on gossip of celebrities and is very popular like the mainstream POP genre therefore they do not need to establish a specific. Another genre that would be appropriate to be released in the market would be the hip hop magazine due to the fact that it is more of a genre that appeals to the male gender stereotypically. Therefore successful magazines such as Nuts have a male readership in there market so therefore hip hop would also have an established audience. However it would be unnecessary to bring out a magazine such as Indie Rock due to the fact there is a magazine that focuses on that which is NME. This is there specialist area.

A company such as Bauer might me more appropriate for a music magazine due to the fact that they have a history of working with other music magazines such as Kiss and Kerrang! The fact that they experience of working with these magazines allows them to work closely with a new magazine company. They also have a readership of Heat and FHM which have a wide range of readerships of both male and female. By having such a large following they can use these style to gain an increased following. Also Bauer introduced the Project phoenix in recent years. This was a survey that they conducted of 16-45 year olds in the UK based around the music industry. By conducting surveys like this on the music industry it would allow them to get a better insight into what this group of people would appreciate and shows the kind of readers that they are aiming for. The fact that they are operating to a specific audience would allow a music magazine under this publisher to gain popularity and flourish.
