MAGNESSIUM RIBBON EXPERIMENTS

QUESTION 01.

1. You are provided with the following materials;

Solution M: Containing 2M HCl
Material N: 5 cm length of magnesium ribbon
Distilled water
Stop watch
Measuring cylinder
Glass rod/ Stirring rod.

Procedures:
i) Cut five pieces of 1 cm length of Magnesium ribbon using
a ruler.
ii) Measure 10 cm3 of solution M using measuring cylinder
and pour into
100 cm3 beaker.
iii) Drop one piece of material N into the beaker containing
10 cm3 of solution
M and immediately start the stop clock.
iv) Stir gently at first using glass rod to make sure the metal
does not stick to
the sides of the beaker.
v) Stop timing when all the material N has reacted and
disappeared. Record
the time.
vi) Repeat the above procedures using 8 cm3, 6 cm3, 4 cm3, 2
cm3 of solution M
while topping up with 2 cm3, 4 cm3, 6 cm3, 8 cm3 of
distilled water respectively.
