2. Answer all questions.
3. Question number one (1) carries 20 marks and the other two (2), carry 15 marks each.
4. Qualitative Analysis Guide (QAG) sheet authorized by NECTA may be used.
5. Mathematical table and non – programmable calculators may be used.
6. Cellular phones are not allowed in the examination room.
7. Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer booklet provided.

SYNDICATE 2023
1. You are provided with the following;
A: 0.15 M Pentahydrate sodium thiosulphate
B: 0.032 M impure potassium permanganate
C: 10% potassium iodide solution
D: 1M sulphuric acid
E: Starch solution
Procedure

i. Measure 80 cm3 of solution A and put into a clean 250 cm3 beaker.
ii. Measure 40 cm3 of distilled water and pour into a beaker containing solution A.
iii. Swirl the mixture for 30 seconds and label it AW.
iv. Put solution AW into the burette and take initial reading.
v. Measure 25 cm3 of solution B by using measuring cylinder and put into a clean 250 cm3
conical flask.
vi. Measure 20 cm3 of solution C by using measuring cylinder and pour into a conical flask
containing solution B.
vii. Measure 25 cm3 of solution D by using measuring cylinder and put into a clean 250 cm3
conical flask containing solution B and C.
viii. Swirl the mixture for 5 seconds and titrate the mixture against solution AW.
ix. When the solution turn pale yellow and 2 cm3 of starch indicator.
x. Continue with titration until blue black color turn to colorless and record final reading.
xi. Repeat procedure (i) to (x) three times and tabulate the results.

Questions

a) Calculate the percentage purity of potassium permanganate.

b) Explain the role of potassium permanganate in this experiment.
c) What will happen if sulphuric acid is not used in this experiment?

2. 1. You are provided with the following

AA: 0.5 M nitric acid
SS: 0.2 M sodium thiosulphate
Distilled water

Procedure

(i) Place a small plastic beaker on top of piece of paper labeled X.

(ii) Measure 25 cm3 of solution SS and pour into a clean small plastic beaker.
(iii)Measure 25 cm3 of solution AA and pour into a clean small plastic beaker containing
solution SS and immediately start stop watch.
(iv) Record the time taken for complete disappearance of latter X.
(v) Proceed with experiment as shown in the following table.
SYNDICATE 2023
3
S/N Volume of SS cm Volume of H2O Volume of AA Time
cm3 cm3 seconds
1 25 0 25
2 20 5 25
3 15 10 25
4 10 15 25
NB: Assume volume is direct proportional to concentration.

Questions

a) Find order of reaction with respect to thiosulphate by isolation method.

b) Explain the significance of adding water to solution SS.
c) Why the volume of solution AA added was constant to every experiment?

3. Sample G contains two cations and two anions. Use the information given in the experiment
column in a table to complete the observations and inferences and hence identify the two cations
and anions in substance G.

S/n Experiment Observations Inferences

(a) Appearance of sample G
(b) Heat a small portion of a sample in a dry
test tube
(c) Perform a flame test on solid sample G
(d) To a small portion of a sample in a dry
test tube, add a small amount of
concentrated H2SO4. If no reaction warm
the contents gently.
(e) Transfer a small portion of sample G in
a clean test tube, and then add enough
amount of distilled water.
(f) To the small portion of the solution
prepared, add dilute NaOH
(g) To the small portion of the solution, add
potassium ferricyanide.
(h) To the small portion of the solution, add
dilute HNO3 followed by AgNO3
solution.
(i) To the small portion of the solution, add
Ba(NO3)2 followed by dilute HNO3 acid
(j) To a small amount of solid sample G,
add dilute NaOH and warm.
