LEADEX FINAL CHEMISTRY PRACTICALS SESSION – SAMPLE GCE 2

Group “ D“:_____________________________________________________________________________
NAME:__________________________________________________________________________________
SECTION A: Quantitative Analysis
PART ONE (1)
You are provided with:
- Solution N, Sodium thiosulphate Na2S2O3aq)
- Solid O, Potassium permanganate, KMnO4
- Dilute Sulphuric acid, H2SO4(aq)
- Solution P, Potassium dichromate, K2Cr2O7
- Aqueous KI solution
- Starch Solution
You are required to:
a) Prepare a standard solution of Solid O
b) Standardize solution N with Solution O
c) Determine the concentration of Solution P using solution N
Previous knowledge of this type of exercise is not required, full details of the procedure are given
below.
PROCEDURE
1. Weigh accurately 0.39g of potassium permanganate, carefully transfer into a 250cm3 volumetric
flask, add 100cm3 of distilled water, shake well to dissolve the salt and make to the mark.
2. Pipette 25cm3 of solution O into a 250cm3 conical flask, add 10cm3 of KI solution followed by
20cm3 of dilute H2SO4. Swirl the flask and titrate with the solution N from the burette until the
solution is pale yellow. Then add 2cm3 of starch solution and continue titrating slowly until the blue
black coloration is just discharged. Record the results of two good titrations in table 1.
3. Pipette 25cm3 of solution P into a 250cm3 conical flask, add 10cm3 of KI solution followed by 20cm3
of dilute H2SO4. Swirl the flask and titrate with the solution N from the burette and add starch just as
in (2) above. Do and record your titration results in table 2.

RESULTS
Mass of weighing beaker and solid O =…………………………………………..g
Mass of weighing beaker alone =..…………………………………………g
Mass of solid O weighed =…………………………………………..g

PART TWO (2)

You are provided with:
- Solution Q, 1.0M HCl(aq)
- Solution R, 0.5M Na2S2O3(aq)
- Small black cross (x) on a white sheet of paper
You are required to:
d) Determine the order reaction with respect to the acid and Thiosulphate
e) Plot a graph to show the order of each at different 1/time intervals
f) Determine the overall order of reaction
Previous knowledge of this type of exercise is not required, full details of the procedure are given
below.
PROCEDURE
1. Using a burette put 5cm3 of solution Q in a 100cm3 beaker. Add 20cm3 of distilled water using a
measuring cylinder.
2. Using another measuring cylinder, place 25cm3 of solution R in a 50cm3 beaker.
3. Place the 100cm3 beaker containing solution Q on the black cross so that you can see the cross
through the solution. Pour the 25cm3 of the solution R into the 100cm3 beaker, swirl and record the
time taken for the black cross to disappear(or become obscured)
4. Repeat procedures (1), (2) and (3) for the rest of the experiments, recording your results in the
table below. Clean the 100cm3 beaker thoroughly after each experiment.
