Rate of Reaction (Part 1)

 Write the formula to calculate the rate of reaction.

 State 3 common ways to determine reaction rates in an experiment.

 Solid phosphorus and oxygen gas react to form tetraphosphorus decoxide.

Determine the average rate of reaction for oxygen during the first 40 s if the
concentration changes from 0.200 mol/L to 0.000 mol/L during this time interval.

 An Alka-Seltzer tablet is added to water to produce carbon dioxide gas. The gas
was collected using water displacement.

a) Based on the data above, plot a graph.

b) From the graph,

i) state the instantaneous rate at 25.0 s

ii) state the average rate of reaction between 0- 10s and 25- 30s.
 An excess of CaCO3 in the form of large pieces of marble is reacted with 500 mL
hydrochloric acid in an open flask standing on a balance. The loss in mass of the
contents of the flask as a function of time is shown graphically below.

a) Write the equation for the reaction which occurs.

b) Calculate the average rate of reaction between 0–20 minutes and also between
20–40 minutes (Take care with units). Explain if there are any differences
between these two rates of reaction.
6. An experiment is was designed to determine the rate of reaction between solid
copper (II) carbonate and hydrochloric acid solution.
Procedure:
 Place a 250ml conical flask onto a mass balance.
 Zero the balance and transfer 5.00g of copper(II)carbonate to the conical flask
 Place a 100ml beaker on a second mass balance
 Zero the mass balance and transfer 50ml of 2.0mol/L HCl solution into the
beaker.
 Transfer the HCl solution to the conical flask containing copper (II) carbonate.
 Swirl the flask and begin timing using a stopwatch
 Measure and record the mass of the solution every 30 seconds for 5 minutes(300
sec)
a) State 2 variable that are held constant in this experiment.
b) Write the balanced equation.
c) Predict the mass of the contents of the flask with time.
d) Complete the table below:
