Rate of Reaction (Prior Knowledge Questions)

1. Write a general formula to calculate the rate of reaction.

∆ amount of product ∨reactant

Rate of Reaction =
time

2. State 3 common ways to determine reaction rates.

o Volume or pressure of gas

o Mass of subtances
o pH
o colour intensity of solution
3. Solid phosphorus and oxygen gas react to form tetraphosphorus decoxide.
Determine the average rate of reaction for oxygen during the first 40 s if the
concentration changes from 0.200 mol/L to 0.000 mol/L during this time interval.
0.200 mol/ L
Rate = = 0.005mol/Ls-1
40 s
4. An Alka-Seltzer tablet is added to water to produce carbon dioxide gas. The gas
was collected using water displacement.

a) Based on the data above, plot a graph.

b) From the graph,

i) state the instantaneous rate at 25.0 s (1.2 ml/s)

ii) state the average rate of reaction between 0- 10s (0.3 ml/s) and 25-

30s.

.
5. An excess of CaCO3 in the form of large pieces of marble is reacted with 500 mL
hydrochloric acid in an open flask standing on a balance. The loss in mass of the
contents of the flask as a function of time is shown graphically below.

a) Write the equation for the reaction which occurs.

b) Calculate the average rate of reaction between 0–20 minutes and also between
20–40 minutes (Take care with units). Explain any difference between these two
rates of reaction.
At the beginning  concentration of the reacting particle is high/ the amount of
particle per unit volume is high. The frequency of effective collision per unit time
is higher therefore the ROR is high.

6) a) - Mass of CuCO3.
- time interval over which mass measurements are taken
- mass of HCl used
-
c) the mass will decreases as the CO2 produce will escape as the flask was not closed.
e)

f) i) 0.019g/s
ii) 0.0098 g/s
