Call Procedure of a mobile (Basic) The call setup takes place in the following way: 1. GMSC receives a signaling message "Initial Address Message (IAM)" for the incoming call (MSISDN). IAM is part of the ISUP. IAM is the first message sent in a call set-up by a Switch or Exchange to other partner exchange. IAM seizes / reserves a circuit between the exchanges for the call and contains the information of numbers dialed by the calling party. 2. GMSC sends a signaling message "Send Routing Information (SRI)" to the HLR where the subscriber data is stored (MSISDN). SRI is a MAP message from GMSC to HLR to request routing info in order to route a call towards a mobile subscriber. 3. HLR uses MSISDN to find the subscriber data in the database. The Supplementary Service (Call forward unconditional not active) is verified. The VLR address that corresponds to the subscriber location and the IMSI are retrieved. HLR sends a signaling message "Provide Roaming Number" using the VLR address as the destination (IMSI). 4. VLR having received the message, requests MSC to seize an idle MSRN and to associate it with the IMSI received. VLR sends back the result to the HLR (MSRN). 5. HLR sends back the result to the GMSC (MSRN). 6. GMSC uses MSRN to re-route the call to the MSC. MSC receives a signaling message "Initial Address Message" for the incoming call (MSRN). MSC performs digit analysis on the received MSRN. The result is "Mobile terminating". The MSC finds the association between the MSRN and the IMSI. The MSRN is released and the IMSI is used for the final establishment of the call. 7. Upon receipt of the IAM message, the destination MSS requests bearer information from the destination MGW and forwards this information to the originating MSS in the
Application Transport Mechanism (APM) message. The APM message contains addressing and optional codec information from the destination MGW. 8. After the TCH is established, the destination MSC transmits an ISUP Address Complete Message (ACM) to the originating MSC to indicate that the remote end of the connection has been reserved. 9. The destination MSC connects the ringback tone to the calling party and sends the Connection Progress (CPG) message to the originating MSC to inform it that the destination phone is now alerting. 10. When the called party picks up the phone, the destination MSC terminates the ringing tone and transmits an ISUP Answer Message (ANM) to the originating MSC. 11. If the call is chargeable, the charging starts upon receipt of the ANM message. 12. If the calling party hangs up first, the originating MSC sends an ISUP release message (REL) to release the connection between the MSCs. 13. If the called party hangs up first, or if the line is busy, the destination MSC sends a REL to the originating MSC indicating the release cause (e.g., normal release or busy). Upon receiving the REL, the destination MSC disconnects the connection to the called party and transmits an ISUP release complete message (RLC) to the originating MSC to acknowledge the release of the remote end of the connection.
