IMPORTANT QUESTIONS FOR CLASS 9 MATHS

NAME OF CHAPTER STATISTICS

Chapter – 14

T.Q = 17

Q1. Describe primary data1 Marks

Ans. The data, collected originally in the process of investigation by the investigator
himself is called primary data

Q2. Describe secondary data1 Marks

Ans. The data, which are not originally collected during the investigation by investigator,
but obtained from some other sources.

Q3. Describe array or arrayed data.1 Marks

Ans. The data which are arranged in ascending or descending order is called array or
arrayed data.

Q4. Describe frequency of data1 Marks

Ans. The repetition of a data during the observation is called the frequency of data

Q5. Explain the relation between class marks, lower limit and upper limit.

1 Marks
Lower Limit+Upper Limit
Ans. Class marks =
2

Q6. The weight of new born babies (in kg) in a hospital on a particular day is
follows. 2.3,2.2,2.1,2.7,2.6,3.0,2.5,2.9,2.8,3.1,2.5,2.8,2.7,2.9,2.4

1. Determine the range.

2. How many babies weight below 2.5kg.
3. How many babies weight more than 2.8kg
3 Marks

Ans.

Arrange the following in ascending order.

2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,2.5,2.5,2.6,2.7,2.7,2.8,2.8,2.9,2.9,3.0,3.1

1. range = Upper Value – Lower value = 3.1-2.1 = 1.0

2. Babies Weight below 2.5 Kg = 4

3. Babies weight more 2.8 Kg = 4

Q7. The class- marks of a distribution are 26,31,36,41,46,51,56,61,66,71 find the

true class limits.3 Marks

Ans. Class size = difference between any two consecutive class marks

= 31-26 = 5

Lower class limit = 26 – 5/2 = 23.5

Upper Class limit = 26+5/2 = 28.5

These are the true class limits for 26

Similarly we can calculate for others

Class Marks Class Limits

26 23.5-28.5

31 28.5-33.5

7,95,72,43,65,35,59 tabulate the data and present the data as a cumulative
frequency table using 70-79 as one of the class intervals.

5 Marks

Ans.

Class Size of data = 79-70 = 9

Maximum value of bill = 95

Lowest value of bill = 24

Range of data = 95-24 = 71

Number of classes = 71/9 =9

Q9. The population of a state in different census year is as given below

Census year 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985

Population in Lakhs 30 50 70 110 150

Represent the above information with the help of bar graph.5 Marks

Ans.

Q10. The bar graph shown in figure represents the circulation of newspaper in
10 languages. Study the bar graph and answer the following questions.

3 Marks

4
1. What is the total number of newspapers published in Hindi, English, Urdu,
Punjabi and Bengali?
2. Name two pairs of languages which publish the same number of
newspapers.
3. State the language in which the largest number of news papers is
published.
4. State the language in which the number of news papers published is
between 2500 and 3600.

Ans. 1.

News paper published in Hindi = 3500

Paper Published in English = 3400

Paper Published in Urdu = 700

Paper Published in Punjabi = 200

Paper published in Bengali = 1000

Total paper published = 8800

2. Marathi and Malayalam published same numbers of papers = 1400

3. Hindi is the language in which largest number of news paper published = 3500

4.English and Hindi are the two language in which the news paper are between 2500
to 3600

Q11. Prepare a frequency distribution from the following data

Mid points Frequency

5 3

15 9

25 15

35 10

45 6

55 4

Total = 47

Find the size of class interval.3 Marks

Ans. Difference between two consecutive mid points = 15-5 = 10

Size of class interval = 10/2 = 5

Lower limit of first interval = 5-5 = 0

Upper limit of first interval = 5+5 = 10

Class interval = 0-10

Q12. From the data given below draw temperature time graph.

Time Temperature (in °C )

9am 30

11am 33

1pm 36

3pm 35

5p 34

From the graph, read the temperature at 12 noon and 4pm.3 Marks

Ans.

At 12 noon temperature is 35 °C

At 4pm temperature is in between 34 and 35 = 34.5 °C

Q13. Mean of 18 numbers is 57.if 9 is added to each number, find the new
mean.3 marks

Ans.

7
Total numbers = 18

Mean = 57

sum of numbers
Mean =
total Numbers
sum of numbers
57 =
18
sum of numbers = 57 ´18
Now on adding 9 to each number
New sum = 57 ´18+9 ´18 = 66 ´18
New sum
New Mean =

66 ´18
= = 66

Q14. Prove that the sum of the deviation of individual observation from mean
is zero.5 Marks

Ans.

let x1, x 2 ,x 3 ............x n be n individual observations whose mean is x

x1 +x 2 +x 3 +............+x n
x=
n
x1 +x 2 +x 3 +............+x n = nx
Sum of the deviation of individual = (x1 -x)+(x 2 -x)+(x 3 -x)+............+(x n - x)
x1 +x 2 +x 3 +............+x n - nx
nx-nx = 0

Q15. The average marks of boys in an examination are 65 and that of girls is
74. if the average of all candidates in that examination is 70, find the ratio of
the number of boys to the number of girls that appeared in the examination.5
Marks

Ans.

8
let total number of boys, participating in examination = x
Number of girls, participating in examination = y
Sum of the marks of boys
Average of boys marks =
x
65x = sum of the marks obtain by boys
Similarly
74y = sum of the marks obtain by girls
Average of total candidate participating in exam = 70
Sum of marks obtain by boys+sum of marks obtain by girls
Average of total =
x+ y
65 x + 74 y
70 =
x+ y
70 x + 70 y = 65 x + 74 y
5x = 4 y
x 4
