Word Problem Cards
Student Work Mats
There are 5 different tasks students must complete in order to escape. This
will take up the whole group time today or may need to be broken into 2
days.
You can have students work as a group, with a partner or alone. You can also
choose to allow them to use manipulatives or not.
Students will solve 4 different task cards to reveal a code number. Once they
know the code number from each card they will write it on the robot code
sheet on the robot that matches the task number. Once they have all 4 code
numbers written on the robot code sheet they will let you check it. If they
have all 4 numbers right they get to “open the safe” and get their robot
pieces.
You can choose to have these copied in black and white to let students color,
cut and glue together to make their robot. There is also an option to just
color if you don’t want them to cut and glue. The black and white version
pieces are bigger for students to color. You can also just have a couple copies
of the colored version copied and laminated for students to piece together
at your table. For the colored version you can punch holes and let them
connect with brads or they can just lay them on the table together without
actually connecting.
For Task # 2 you can have students color with a dry erase marker with the
paper in a dry erase sleeve, or have them use the color boxes and place
them over the boxes that make the correct path if you do not want them
to color with the dry erase marker. .

Questions to ask:
How are adding ten ones and one ten alike? How is it different?
Would it be easier to start at 15 and count on 50 or easier to start at
50 and count on 15? Why?
How would knowing how to add 20 + 70 help you add 70 + 28?
Game:
Once someone has 3 in a row, students will use the answer key to
check so make sure they work all of the problems on paper or dry
erase board and keep until the end of the game to check their work.
There are 4 different game boards for each level. Copy front to back
so students can play multiple times.
