Project construction manager (PCM)
the project construction manager controls the overall activities of the site. He organize and
order the site engineer and the office engineer on the accomplishment of the task In addition
he has the responsibility in the overall of the project and has a connection to the client at the
time of their visit to the site. He accept and correct complains and corrections from the
consultant side (supervisor).
Site supervisor
In our site the site supervisor works on the side of the consultant which is responsible to he
client. The main role of the supervisor in general is to follow up the execution of a project with
the design, specification and appropriate legal and social practice. The inspector must have a
keen eye, be observant and able to see critically to do this a thorough knowledge of the
procedure for executing the particular work he is inspecting is necessary. He approves of
activities was done before they extend to the next activities and give any suggestion or
recommendation about the site on the site

hazards through prevention, harm reduction, and eliminating any health threats
➢Daily laborers: -Are unskilled man workers who work as on specific activity.
➢ Guards: - Keep the site and follow the activity of the site if there is odd react.
As we know we are students and we haven’t executed much work on the site this is because of ,
lack of knowledge or experience and the manager on the site are not much willing to give as a
specific work.in our internship program ,but we executed the following activities
• Rebar checkup for beam, column, Shear Wall, Slab, Elevator &Stair
• Observing and understanding the practical work in concrete pouring, formwork and
• Observing and discussing about different Construction material and Construction Equipment
used on the site
• observing and watching how tower crane operates and it s basic manuals.

overcome it one by one
program.as a solution i start to take the helmet, but after around two weeks i adapt to the
weather and have no more effect on me.
➢ Socialization
On my first week I was challenged to adapt with worker of the site but in few days, i make good
relationship with both the skilled and unskilled workers.
20 | P a g e
Chapter 3 Office work
i have been tried to see and work some of the office work in my internship program. But due to
the space limitation we did most of the office work in my home (dorm). some of the activities or
the works that I have been executed and understood are listed below
My internship a construction site in A.A at Biherawi (National Theatre). This construction is the
new building of National Theater. The construction site is now at the 1st floor level. It is a
modern building in our country and East Africa.
“A new 1.5 billion Br headquarters is set to replace the current National Theater, formerly known
as Haile Selassie I Theatre.
• Expected to take five years to complete, the construction was started under the supervision of
Addis Mebratu Consulting Architects & Engineers, a 21-year-old firm that previously consulted
and supervised the construction of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia's Megenagna branch.
21 | P a g e
• Afro-Tsion won the bid to construct the new building six months ago and signed the contract
two months ago. The city's Integrated Infrastructure & Construction Permit & Control Authority
issued a building permit for the building on March 6, 2019.
The construction of the building will create jobs for 650 people, according to Tesfaye Misganaw,
general manager of Afro-Tsion Construction.
• "The current cinema will be preserved as a heritage building," said Befekadu Kefelegn, director
of public and international relations at the National Theater, which was established in 1956 and
currently employs 315 people.
• The new building will have a flexible stage that can stretch up to eight additional meters. Upon
completion, the building will have a state-of-the-art cinema that can accommodate up to 1,500
people and a museum.
• The project concept was developed six years ago and was inaugurated by laying a foundation
at a ceremony. But the project was delayed due to boundary issues and a failed bidding process,
according to Befekadu.
• "These led the project cost to rise from 530 million Br to 1.5 billion Br," Befekadu said. Due to
construction activity at the current premises, some of the offices have moved to a rented
building in front of Yobek Building around Senga Tera three weeks ago. The theatre, music and
production departments stayed at the current premises, while other offices of the ICT
department, the director, deputy director and human resource departments moved to the new
building.” Published on Apr 06,2019{VOL19 NO988). Recently, we see written news which says,
“1.5-billion-birr loss caused the new construction of the national park. It is said that the
construction of the new professional building of the Ethiopian National Theater, which started in
2011 with the aim of completing it in three years, caused a loss of more than 1.5 billion birr to
the government.
• It was stated that a contract was entered into with Afro-Tsyon Construction Company to
complete the construction of the building within three years with a budget of more than 1.4
billion birr.
• Due to the weak performance of the contractor company, at least 22% of the work should
have been done within one year and six months, but it was only able to work at 6%, causing a
significant delay in the construction; it has been announced that the contract will be terminated
It is explained that currently, Ovid Group, a Grade One contractor which has been active since
2013, has entered into a direct contract with an indigenous organization and is working to
complete the construction of the building in the next three years at a cost of 2.9 billion birr.
22 | P a g e
• The Ethiopian National Television reported that a new professional building of 6 thousand 200
square meters is being built with a height of 2B+G+11.”
• The expansion project includes building a stage facility, which is estimated to cost 400 million
birr and an 11-story building, among other facilities, including a Cinema with modern sound
systems and podiums.
3.3Drawing
3.3.1 Assembly (construction)Drawing
Are set of drawings used to show the relation between different parts of the project. In
construction, they will show all axes of columns, overall dimensions and dimensions required to
relate/assemble parts together or in location like distance between walls, components and
openings. They are produced by consultants(which in this case is afro tsion)
Preliminary are used for tenders to show main dimensions and specs required without going into
details between parts. Detailed assembly are used for assembly during the installation or
assembly process.
Construction drawings have all necessary views and sections to show everything in place and
how they are related. They include mechanical drawings, electrical drawings, plumbing,
construction and steel structure drawings.

4.3 Construction of structural element.
4.3.1 Foundation.
Our building is used two types of foundation (isolated and combined footing because of the building
foundations are close to each other.
4.3.2 Column.
A column is a vertical structure member to transfer the compressive load. The columns of the
bottom floor must be large enough to bear the accumulative weight of each floor above it.
Figure/33Column Reinforcment
37 | P a g e
Formwork is the mold which is used in construction for giving desire structural shape by
pouring concrete in the mold. In simple word, formwork is a mold to cast concrete member in
different shapes and sizes. There are many different types of formwork available i.e. 1. Timber
formwork 2. Plywood formwork 3. Steel formwork Figure 7/Column formwork 4. Aluminum
formwork Figure 8/Column formwork 2 20 From the above types of formwork in our site they
used mainly plywood formwork. Plywood for the concrete formwork is boiling waterproof grade
plywood, its preservative treated and especially suited for use in shuttering and formwork.
Plywood formwork is very economic as its can be put to reaped use, depending upon the care
taken on the erection and dismantling. The main advantage of using plywood is, it is durable
under alternate wetting and drying condition, plywood has a hard surface and it possess
adequate strength to withstand a load concrete and the forces caused by pouring of concrete
and vibration Advantage of plywood formwork 1. Plywood can be cut in the required size 2.
Plywood is strong, durable and light in weight 3. Plywood provides smooth finish concrete
surface 4. Plywood makes formwork quicker and easier
Figure/34Column Formwork
Before constructing of column formwork the layout column is done the layout is used to align
and protect the formwork, to do the layout the following process is taken
1. The surveyor give the reference point on the edge of one column
38 | P a g e
2. The carpenter place and hit two short wood(“Abay”) around the opposite side of column The
foreman and carpenter man by using rope (“ligna”) they identify the center and the end point of
each column
3. Another carpenter man hit the “crachery’’ around the three sides of the column then they
insert the plywood formwork in the required size.
4. Start to construct the support of the formwork by hitting the “kerebat’’ on it from the lower
to the upper column on some space difference. 6. Finally to create more strength we protect by
hitting to “ stanga” (inclined wood) to the column. Checkup of column formwork
❖ For the vertical alignment by using “tumbi” (plumb bob) could check the vertical alignment
of the column
❖ For the horizontal alignment measure the horizontal distance between two column center to
center and internal edge of the two columns
In our site the concrete they used is transported concrete which is ready mix. When they order
the concrete they do some calculate on For example let say they want to pour 3 column
Type of column C1 C2 C3
Total v(m3 ) 8.36m3 We got a total of 8.36m 3 but there is no a car which hold 8.36m3 they
order 9m3 . .
39 | P a g e
Placing of concrete
Concrete should be place and compacted before setting commences. Methods of placing should
be in such a way as to prevent segregation it should be not dropped from a height more than
about 1m. Compaction of concrete is the process which expels entrapped air from freshly
placed concrete and packs the aggregate particles together so as to increase the density of
concrete generally proper compaction. Increases significantly the ultimate strength of concrete
and enhances the bond with reinforcement Decreases the permeability and helps to minimize
its shrinkage-and creep characteristics Also ensures that the formwork is completely filled i.e.
that is used to avoid the honeycomb 22 Methods of compaction in our site they use immersion
vibrator; the vibrator should be lowered vertically into the concrete at regularly spaced intervals
and allowed to descend by gravity. After finished of rebar working and check up by the
supervisor the next step is placing of concrete in our site there are 3 ways of placing these by
man power, truck mixer and chutes.
Curing of concretes
40 | P a g e
4.3.3 Shear Wall.
Shear wall;- is another structure mostly used in construction of lift shaft and its load bearing
structure that transfer the shaft load directly into the foundation and made up of the collection
column that bind together in order to increase its strength.
4.3.4 Beam
A beam is a structural element that primarily resists loads applied laterally to the beam axis. Its
mode of deflection is primarily by bending. The loads applied to the beam results in reaction
forces at the beams support points. The total effect of all these forces acting on the beam is to
produce shear forces and bending moments within the beams ,that in turn induce internal
stresses
The construction of beam formwork that some steps that we do these are;-
1. By using of level assign the height of the lower level of the beam
2. Start to construct the scaffolding (“kristie”) of the beam then place the horizontal RHS
on the “kristie” ,finally place the “ dimdmat” on the RHS perpendicularly Formwork
3. . Place the bottom plywood “ fondo” on the “ dimdamit”
4. Finally place the two side plywood “sponda” on the two side of the beam.
41 | P a g e
Beam Reinforcement
After the formwork is finished, The bar bender cut the beam bar based on the structural
drawing then start to place bar on the required place .the bottom bar of the beam overlaps
at the support of the beam which is on the column because on the support the tension is
occur on the top of the neutral axis and the top bar of the beam is overlapped on the center
of the beam because at the mid span or the center of the beam the tension is occur below
the neutral axis. The spacers are left in place for the pour to keep the reinforcing in place,
and become the permanent of the structure in our site they used spacer for column, slab,
beam retaining wall and shear wall. In our site they use 2cm thick spacer. A spacer is a
device that secures the rebar in the reinforced concrete structure, as the rebar is assembled
in place prior Figure 14/Beam reinforcement to the final concrete pour.

4.3.5 Slab.
A slab is a structural element, made of concrete that is used to create flat horizontal surface
such as floors, roof decks and ceiling. A slab is generally several inches thick and supported by
beams, columns, walls, or the ground. Concrete slabs can be prefabricated offsite and lowered
into place or may be poured in-situ using formwork. If reinforcement is required, slabs can be
pre-stressed or the concrete can be poured over rebar positioned within the formwork.
❖ Step2 construct I beam by pattern for support and constructed square in 4 side and
construct what they call or site name fondo to support beam
❖ Step 3 plywood
Slab formwork
The formwork construction of slab is almost similar to the construction of beam formwork. . the
formwork should be properly oiled so that the concrete does not stick to the surface of the
wooden board. Slab formwork is proceeding after the construction of beam formwork. Some of
the steps of slab formwork are;-
2. The start to construct the scaffolding (probs) then place the “modini” on the scaffolding
properly
❖ For the horizontal structure the formwork is rested up to 21 to 28 days and For the vertical
structure the formwork is rested up to 16 to 24 hours

Slab reinforcement
The bottom horizontal reinforcement are placed based on the drawing in both direction and
tied each other by using wire. In the slab there are two types of bar this are;- Main bar ;-in order
to transfer that bending moment developed at the bottom of the slab, main reinforcement bar
is provided at the shorter span direction. The purpose of the main bar is to transfer the bending
load developed at the bottom of the slab to the beams. Distribution bar;-are used to resist the
shear stress, cracks developed in the longer span we place the distribution bars perpendicularly
on the top of the main bars and we compare to main bar we use less diameter bar because it
only used to resist the cracks developed due to shear stress on the top of the slab. Finally we
placed in the longer direction. Difference between main bar and distribution bar Main
reinforcement bar normally used at the bottom of the slab. Distribution bar on the top of the
main bar Main reinforcement bars are placed in shorter direction and distribution bars placed in
the longer direction Main reinforcement bars used to transfer the bending moment developed
at the bottom of theslab to the beam.
Negative bars; - are provided to resist the negative moments, this moment are occurred at the
end of the slab, and they are provided at the top of the slab, its length are 1/3 of the total
length of the slab. Overlapping bar ;- bar overlap is important for reinforced concrete structure
to allow the transfer of both tensile and compressive load from one reinforcement bar to
another by means of shear or skin friction.
After finishing of placing of all bar on the slab negative bar, main and distribution bar the next
step is placing of “kebeleto” between the negative bar and the main bar is used to avoid the
binding of the two bars and to give strength to the slab while walking, then finally placed
electric conduit before casting of concrete
Before pouring of concrete we check the following things;- Diameter of bar is placed according
to the, Spacing of the bar(mesh), The overlapping of bar to the next slab, The negative bar
placed properly and its length to the adjacent slab, They check the kebeleto is placed properly
and The spacer is properly inserted and the wire conduit is broken or not .

4.3.6 Stair.
A stair is a set of steps leading from one floor of a building to another, typically inside the
building. The room or enclosure of the building, in which the stair is located, is known as
staircase. When constructing stair functionality is the most important consideration extreme
45 | P a g e
accuracy must be used for safe design. Stair must satisfy strict building codes meant to ensure
safety and climbing comfort.
Stair formwork
The first step is implementation of the formwork, like others structure the formwork is
not done once. First they construct the stair soffit and place the starter bar that came
from the slab and finally place the riser formwork. By using of “wuhalik” they place the
tread and riser properly.
Stair reinforcement
Steps on the placement stair reinforcement ▪ First place the starter bar that came from
the slab used to caught the stair firmly to the structure, second place the negative bar on
both, bottom and upper part and Finally place the bar that is bend on the Shape of the
stair.

Spacer A spacer is a device that secures the rebar in the reinforced concrete structure,
as the rebar is assembled in place prior to
the final concrete pour. The spacers are
left in place for the pour to keep the
reinforcing in place, and become the
permanent of the structure in our site
they used spacer for column, slab, beam
retaining wall and shear wall. In our site
they use 2cm thick spacer

Chapter 5 Over all benefits of Internship
Internship is a program, which is almost the first real opportunity for university students to
apply their theoretical knowledge to the real world. It allows us to gain experience working
in an organization while still studying at university. Internship is an excellent way to branch
out from your university course into the construction industry by helping us expand our list
of contacts, from university-based lecturers and tutors to people who are currently working
in the industry.
. Internships can help you gain valuable work experience, fulfill college requirements and
give you material to add to your resume. They can introduce you to many aspects of full-
time employment while allowing you to explore your interests and form your personal
career goals.
• To expose us to the real/practical face of construction world. While we might have an idea
about our task in our field, we will not know it until actually perform it and experience it
explicitly.
• Internship helps us to apply our theoretical knowledge and to land it on the ground of the
real world, and to develop our professional aptitude, strengthen personal character, and
makes us ready to tackle and pass challenges.
• Internship will help us to improve our general performance and help us develop our
personal and professional skills, which in return makes us competent professionals
throughout our career.
• Internship helps us to develop business contacts with many professionals, these results
providing a greater opportunity for getting job. These people can help us find a job later,
act as references or help us with projects after we are hired somewhere else.

5.2 Over all Benefits I gained from this Internship.
5.2.1In terms of improving practical skill.
practical skills are skills performed by hand or with human intervention using equipment,
tools or technology requiring guidance, force or movement. We believe that we have
developed our practical skill by doing different tasks at both site and some office. In this
internship program, we have exposed our self, tried to develop different practical skill,
and asked to learn more. Some of the practical skills that we have got are:
• Some problem solving skills on site work
• Good inspection skills
• Usage of TUMBI for checking alignments
• Some good skills on how Scaffolding and form work are fixed
• Some good skills on how reinforcement bars are arranged
• Casting of concrete for column
• We have developed some skills about bar bending
49 | P a g e
• Should be confident with good organization techniques
Enhance and strengthen our resume to know more from about civil
engineering courses

communication are essential and it is important to understand their importance and know how
to use them effectively.
Communication takes many forms, including verbal (both face-to-face and distanced, such as
over the phone), non-verbal (conveying and understanding non-verbal cues such as body
language), written, and visual (such as graphs and visual signage). All these forms of
communication are essential and it is important to understand their importance and know how
to use them effectively.

Chapter 6
Conclusion and Recommendation
6.1 Conclusion
For me,, the internship period was the most beneficial time because it really aided in my familiarization
with and acquisition of experience in the actual world. It is well recognized that one cannot be a
successful engineer in the construction projects without having a thorough understanding of the
construction industry. This internship gave me a comprehensive view of the field, including how we
could engage with other professionals and learn what the real business environment is like. It also taught
me invaluable lessons about social interaction and professional demeanor. Additionally, I gain practical
skills while on the job site and at a construction site until now it provides us valuable hands-on
experience in the field of site work. It offers me the opportunity to learn about the planning and
execution of construction design on the ground., This experience would be beneficial for anyone
interested in pursuing a career in construction., How to connect sketching with job site operations i also
acquire practical knowledge on site such as; -
How to relate drawing with site activities ,How i should if i face construction problem and find solutions
How to manage the overall activities of the work ,How i check any contractor work according to the
drawing provided by the designer or not, How I check both the office and site work To improve self –
confidence and to make full understanding about the outside environment It helps the students to
improve or enhance their social interaction skill by communicating with people who have different
behaviors, knowledge and cultures It is helpful for students to know what the outside environment looks
like It helps the student to get a practical knowledge In general, these Four-month consecutive months
widened our practical skills and theoretical knowledge. because of its paramount importance, the
internship program should continue in a well-organized manner.
6.2 Recommendation
❖ As G1 contractor they have to help us in relation to give as relevant information and have good
communication with us.
53 | P a g e
❖ Some of the worker on the site do not have safety tools like safety shoes, helmet, etc. . . .to protect
them from the sudden injuries, due to this problem, they are exposed to different injuries while working.
Therefore, we recommended to the company to arrange the safety tools and 41 obliged them to wear
safety tools. These is because there is no enough safety equipment so, it is better to buy them
❖ The construction site needs free space to put the construction materials properly. But in our site,
there is no enough space to put construction materials. This cause crowded in the site and it is not
comfortable to work freely. Finally, despite of the above problems which should be improved, we want
to admire OVID Construction P.L.C for their greatest achievements and success
