Examples
1. In the mix design of wearing course for particular road, percent by mass of five types of aggregates
with the given blend proportion were used.

If the sp. gra. of bitumen = 1.01

Percent by wt. of bitumen = 6.4

max. sp. gra. of the mix = 2.4

bulk sp. gra. of the mix = 2.35

Determine a) the effective and absorbed bitumen

b) the percent of void in the mix and in the mineral aggregate

c) the void filled with bitumen

2. Determine the rate of application of an AC – 300 pen bitumen and flaky chipping for the double
dressing. The average least dimension of chipping for the first layer is 14mm and half of this for the
second layer. The terrain is generally flat and located in a wet zone. The AADT of the freeway
segment is 450

R = 0.625+(F*0.023) +[0.0375+(F*0.0011)] ALD

3. Bulk specific gravity of the combined aggregate (Gsb) = 2.62

Specific gravity of asphalt =1.03

4. For the CBR test result shown in the table below, plot unit load versus penetration curve and
determine the CBR value.
Table. CBR test data (take diameter of plunger as 56mm)

• As we can see from the graph, the curve is not the more normal shaped curve. When this
happens the curve must be corrected by drawing a tangent at the point of greatest slope and

then transposing the axis of load so that zero penetration is taken as the point where the
tangent cuts the axis of penetration.
• The corrected load penetration curve is the tangent from the new origin to the point of
tangency and the curve itself. The tangent cuts the axis of penetration at 1.25mm.
