Bandages are medical devices used to
cover, support and protect wounds or
injuries. They can also used to apply
pressure to control bleeding and reduce
swelling
Definition
Bandages are strips of fabric or other
material used to provide support,
protection and compression to wounds
injuries or sprains. They are typically
applied to hold dressing in places,
apply pressure to control bleeding or
immobilize injured limbs —--- WHO
Purpose
● To hold a dressing in
place over a wound
● To create pressure
over bleeding wound
to control hemorrhage
Purpose
● To restrict movement
● To secure a splint to an injured
part of the body
● To provide support to injured
part of body
Purpose
● To prevent or reduce swelling
● To provide warmth
● To correct a deformity
Types
Types of bandages
● Triangular bandages
● Roller bandages
● Gauze bandages
● Elastic bandages
PRINCIPLES
● Explain the procedure to the
patient
● Provide comfortable position
● Always stand infront of the
patient
● Keep bandage clean and dry
● Select the correct size and type of
bandages
● Support the injuried part
● Hold the head of the bandage in left
hand while bandaging right limb
● Begin and end the bandaging with two
circular turn
● A bandage should never be
applied directly over a wound
● Bandage from distal to
proximal part of the limb
● While taking turns ,cover ⅔ ,
leaving ⅓ of the bandage
uncovered
● Take parallel with one
another
A bandage should be applied firmly
and fastened security
It should not be applied too tightly
that interfere with the circulation or
too loosely that allows dressing to
slip
● Have the finger and toes exposed
to check the circulation
● Do not keep the knot or pin directly
to the injuried part of bony
prmoinace as if causes pressure
and discomfort
● Finish off with a straight turn above
the part,hold the end and fasten
with safety pin
Types of basic bandages
Circular bandages
● A circular bandages is a
bandage that is applied in
circular turns around a
body part
● Spiral turn
Spiral bandages is a bandage
that is applied in spiral turns
.it is fairly uniform in
circumference such as upper
arms and upper leg
Reverse spiral
bandages
Spiral reverse turn are used to
bandage cylindrical parts of the
body that are not uniform in
circumference such as lower leg
and forearm
Figure of eight bandages

It is done in the shape of “8” and mainly


used to ankle tool and elbow .The
bandage is applied obliquely up and
down alternately

IIt is a form of figure of eight
bandages. The turn is larger than the
other. It is used for joints at right
angles to the body eg: thumb ,groin
shoulder
