against one or more hazards
Examples
If hazards are eliminated in the design and redesign processes, risks that derive from those hazards are also eliminated
Elimination of the hazard shall include the use of elements that result in an intrinsically or inherently safe product, process, or
or redesign of the workplace or the task throughout the lifecycle of the product, process, or service
Methods that illustrate substitution include
- Using automated material handling equipment rather than manual material handling;
- Providing an automatic feed system to reduce machine hazards;
- Using a less hazardous chemical product (or using the same chemical product but in a different form: pellets or crystals inste
- Reducing speed, force, amperage;
- Reducing temperature, pressure;
- Replacing an ancient steam heating system and its boiler explosion hazards with a hot air system.
Engineering safety devices are intended to prevent access by workers to the hazard. They are used to separate the hazardous
Engineering controls can reduce risk by: Preventing or limiting access to a hazard; Preventing or limiting exposure to a hazard;
alternative means of interacting with a hazard.
Examples of engineering controls include:
- Use automation; - Machine guards; - Interlock systems;
- Circuit breakers; - Presence sensing devices; - Safety nets;
- Ventilation systems; - Sound enclosures; - Fall prevention systems
- Lift tables, conveyors, and balancers; - Mechanical hard stops; - Barriers;
- Safety mats; - Light curtains; - Two-hand controls;
- Work station design; - Tool selection; - Process modification.
Examples of warning systems include:
- Technological (including software) and warning systems to warn of existing or impeding hazards and/or hazardous situations
- Lights, beacons, and strobes and/or audible alarms (beepers, horns, backup alarms, etc.) that are intended to raise awarenes
- Warning signs that effectively inform workers of potential hazards and/or hazardous situations; and
- Indicators, labels that raise awareness of the workers’ proximity to hazards;
- Smoke detectors;
- Chemical detection systems;
- Restricted space painted on the floor;
- Access restrictions to work areas;
- Alerts in operating procedures or manuals.
Administrative controls are used to communicate actions necessary to reduce exposure to hazards.
Examples of administrative controls include:
- Safety rules, procedures, protocols, policies, instructions, etc.;
- Training programs (documented with practical application);
- Job rotation/enlargement, pacing,, scheduled rest periods, etc.;
- Personnel selection; - Supervision; - Motivation, behavior modification;
- Maintenance; - Management of change; - Investigations;
- Inspections; - Lockout/tagout.
They are direct barriers worn by the employee. Examples of PPE include:
- Hard hats, bump caps; - Gloves and mitts; - Respirators;
- Safety glasses and goggles; - Face shields; - Welding screens;
- Safety shoes; - Hearing protection; - Fall protection devices;
- Protective clothing, aprons; - Skin protection.
