1.2: History & Origin

Unilever was created in 1930 by the merger of

Britishso ap maker Lever Br others and Dutc h margar

i n e produ cer Margarine Unie . It was a very logical

merger,as palm oil was a major raw material for both margarine

sand soa ps and co uld be im ported m ore effici ently inla rger

quantities .By 1980 soap and edible fats contribut ed just

40% of profit s, compa red with an origin al 90%. I n 1984 th

ecompan y bought the brand Brooke Bond (maker of PGTips

tea).In 19 87 Unilever strengthe ned its positi on in the

worldskin care market by acquiring Chesebro ugh-Ponds

, themaker of Rag, Po nd's, Aqu a-Net, Cutex Nai

l Polish, P epsodent toothpast e, and Va seline

. In 1989 Unilever bought Calvin Klein Cosmetics ,

Faberg, and Elizabeth Arden , but the latter was later

sold (in 2000) to FFIFragra nces. In 1996, Unilever

purchase d Helene Curtis Industries , giving the

company "a powerf ul new presencei n the United States

shampoo and deodorant market". The purch ase brought

Unilever the Suave and Finesse hair-care product brands

and Degree d eodorant brand. In 2000th e compan y absorb

ed the A merican business Best Foo ds, strengthe ning its p

resence i n North America a ndextendi ng its portfolio of foods

brands. In a singl e dayin April 2000, it bought,

ironically, both Ben & Jerry's ,k n o w n for its calorie-

rich ice creams, and Slim Fast.

harmful c holestero l, on May 21 in theU.S. under its Promise

brand at $1.00 a shot. It has alsola unched it s South A merican s

oyabased fru it drink i nthe UK under the Adez brand, an

d this and a Eur opeanKno rr Vie fruit-andvegetable -shot

drink are also under con sideration for launch into the

U.S. market.
