Black And White

movie that people can watch. Nowa-
days, even though colors are present
in almost all of the movies, black-and-

three main factors that make these two
types of movies differ from each other:
attraction, distraction, and price.

Long before color movies were invent-

here are many ways that movies can
reach people’s deepest feelings, es-
pecially in the way colors are used.
Colors in movies are not only about aesthetics
but also about the emotions hidden behind
them. Colors used in movies can be classified
into the colors of the rainbow: red, orange,
yellow, green, blue, and violet.

Green is a light-toned color. Green is used in movies to

replicate nature and hope, which is perfectly symbolized
as the last tree on Earth in Wall-E. Green also notifies
of a dangerous signal. It is not a random thing that
most radioactive matters attach to the color green. If

E
ffects in general are one of the most crucial parts to make a great
and successful movie, especially horror movies. In this genre, prac-
tical effects and digital effects both play important roles in creat-
ing a visually stunning and immersive experience for the audience. How-
ever, what are the differences between digital and practical effects, and
which one is better?

Regarding the first category, practical effects have the advan-

tages of physicality as well as convenience they offer to
actors. When practical effects are used, the weight and
texture can help the actors interact with an object in
a way that digital effects often cannot. As a
result, the performance of the ac-
tors will be improved, and the
physical space that practical
effects occupy can help the
actors better understand
and perform their move-
ments and choreograph. In
contrast, digital effects can
often lead to a lack of physicali-
ty and sometimes even detachment
of actors from the final product.

On the other hand, creating practical effects

can be expensive, especially if the scene is com-
plex and requires many objects and materials. It
can also be very time-consuming and demanding
due to its re-
quirements of
many skilled artists
and craftsmen to work
on set. Contrary to that,
digital effects can be pro-
duced faster and with less de-
mand for physical labor, making them
more cost-efficient for large-scale pro-
ductions.

21
The final difference between
practical and digital effects is
the level of realism that they can
achieve. While practical effects
can look real on set, they often re-
quire a lot of tweaking and ma-
nipulation in post-produc-
tion to make them look
seamless and convinc-
ing on film. However, if practical effects are done right,
it will make a movie remembered by generations. For
instance, the infamous Alien’s chest-burster scene
was entirely done by practical effects. The actor
John Hurt lay on the table beneath a fake tor-
so that hid his body and the chest-burster was
pushed through the fake torso from the other
side, thus creating one of the greatest scenes
in cinema history. Digital effects, on the other
hand, can create almost any imaginable effect
in a way that is photo-realistic. Computer
graphics can add a level of detail and in-
tricacy that is beyond what’s possible
with practical effects. Some of the
movies that use digital effects are
Hereditary, A Quiet Place and It
Follows.

In conclusion, practical effects

and digital effects both have
their unique advantages in show-
casing horror movies. Ultimately, the
choice between practical and digital effects
comes down to the vision of the filmmakers and the story
they want to tell. They can even combine the two effects to en-
sure that the audience gets a genuinely spooky, bone-chilling, and
thrilling experience that stays with them long after the movie ends.

MPA ccording to Media Partners Asia, the year
2022 witnessed an incredibly high rate of
Vietnamese Internet users violating copy-

o i
right on digital platforms. We take third place
in Southeast Asia, just behind Indonesia and the
Philippines. One of the most common violations
is movie piracy, which has been so popular among

v r
Vietnamese audiences that it has become a norm.
The reasons lie in the three main factors including
the consumers’ mindset, limited access to official
content, and the loose laws on this problem.

i a
The first reason is the consumers’ low awareness
of copyright and ownership. An obvious difference
between official and pirated content is that the for-
mer needs paying, while the latter does not. Hav-

e c
ing had such an economical way to watch movies,
it is hard for consumers to resist the temptation
of illegal streaming sites. Little do they know that
this will discourage movie producers and affect the
economy in the long term. Even if they do, most

y
of the audiences choose to take the easy way out
by continuing to watch pirated movies. This is the
biggest factor contributing to the popularity of
movie piracy.

Secondly, supposing audiences are willing to pay,

there is another problem related to the limitation
of official content. Each platform has its original
series and shows that certain audiences enjoy; however, not all platforms are
available for Vietnamese audiences. Disney+ is a good case in point. Whoev-
er in Vietnam wants to go back to childhood
by watching The Wonderful World of Mick-
ey Mouse has no option other than going to
pirated streaming sites as Disney+ is not yet
available in this country. In addition, some
movies can take months or even years to be of-
ficially released in Vietnam as they have to
23
undergo legal procedures. Take the
movie that has recently won seven Os-
cars - Everything Everywhere All at
once as an example. The film was re-
leased in the US in March 2022, but
only in late June 2022 was it brought to

V
Vietnam. During those three months,
audiences had to access ille-
gal streaming sites to watch
the movie.

i
The last factor contribut-
ing to movie piracy is the
loose laws on this issue.
The rules, especially sanc-

e
tions, are not specific and
complete enough whereas
cases are getting more and
more complicated. However, the last five years have seen the au-
thorities’ remarkable efforts to solve this problem. This can be

t
illustrated by the case of phimmoi.net, which has made an illegal
profit of 15 billion VND every year through advertisements. The
owner of the website was taken to court. Although the case has
not come to an end, it can be considered as an example to deter

n
other pirated sites.

In closing, movie piracy is popular due to the consumers’ mind-

set, limited access to official content, and the loose laws on this
problem. As a conscious audience, one should boycott movie

piracy and be willing
to pay for original
content. This is for
the development of

nm
not only Vietnam's
economy but also au-
diences’ awareness.
