CONSULTANT: MOHAMUD HASSAN ABDULLA GRANT NUMBER: CHXEAS019 TITLE: POTENTIAL SPACE IN EASTLEIGH REPORT INTRODUCTION:

23/02/2012

Eastleigh was founded in 1921. The colonial government allotted Nairobi's residential estates by race, and Eastleigh was pointed for Asians and elite Africans who worked as clerks, builders or shoemakers. Eastleigh was originally a large Kenyan Asian enclave until independence in 1963. In recent years, the suburb has been dominated and almost exclusively inhabited by Somali immigrants. The youths occupies the bigger percentage of the total population, whereby most of them are not employed or running a business to earn a living despite the fact that they have gone to school for formal education. This bigger fallouts is mostly contributed to the fact that no established develop centres to equip them with any modern training or skills i.e. ICT, gym centre, tailoring, hairdressings, barber, mechanics, etc. They have been currently meeting in the few temporary social halls, open spaces, Play ground and malls. Though its has been supportive to the youths of Eastleigh area, but not enough to be relied on. A well established youth center/space will be greatly important for their well being if initiated within Eastleigh or immediate surroundings, hence they will fully be able to engaged in specific part-time or fulltime training. Young people benefit by gaining skills, knowledge, self-esteem, and connectedness through this acquired modern skills. Communities benefit by improving quality of life, coordinating youth services, and authentically embracing diversity by representing young people and accountable leaders within their respective communities.

OBJECTIVES

To indentify potential space for the development of youth centres in Eastleigh and immediate surroundings. Potential spaces that could possibly be used as a youth center in Eastleigh both preexisting spaces that would need to be constructed, for sale and for rent.

During the evaluation, the consultant in coordination with KTI staff is expected to include the following list:

List of locations that would be suitable for a youth center Photographs of the listed locations Ownership details on the locations Size of the location Whether or not it would be possible to use the space as youth center

METHODOLOGY The survey was conducted in Eastleigh and immediate surroundings to indentify potential space to establish a youth development center. The MALLS are situated within Eastleigh central business areas generally a busy place. Peoples perception on youths that they are posing threats to their business i.e. looting, robbing their clients or breaking in to their premises. This will cause conflicts between the youths and local business communities. POLITICAL CONSIDERATION The areas suggested as shown from the findings, has not so far attracted any political interference, hence conflict of interest may a rise i.e. areas like the Section 1 plot is a family property, the California land which is a public land and managed by the local people. COMMUNITY PERSPECTIVE In general, community seeks to promote the variety of developmental competencies that young people need to become productive, contributing members of society. Instead of a pathological focus, community emphasizes the strengths, resources, and potential of young people, and, as a result, holds positive expectations regarding the contributions youth can make to society and to their immediate environments. Community also adopts a holistic view of development giving attention to youths physical, personal, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development. Finally, community stresses that interventions should be conducted with considerations of individual choice, values, and culture in mind. Therefore, some interventions are culturally tailored for a particular target population or are otherwise modified to suit the needs and preferences of participants. The communities suggest that the Pumwani Social Hall is the best for this project, they are supportive and looking forward for a long term solution projects in the area. Also the nearby communities are wishing for the same to be established nearer to them. CHALLENGES FACED

It was never easy to get direct access or contacts with the premises owner, hence caretakers, brokers and land agents demand prior payment to allow one seeking audience with the owner. People in charge of these places are not willing to allow one to have a video coverage or taking photos of the Land or space, fearing of conmen who takes picture or video of the premises, go market it as on sale property.

12

Many premises are occupied with very many active business activities hence strict measures are considered, hence one must go through many process to identifying him/herself to the local security set by the management of the premise. Explain the real intention of the idea of research to the people concerned was very challenging; they were not readily willing to buy the idea immediately.

13

LESSONS LEARNT Many youths are idle and needs to be engaged in activities. Some organization/institutions are willing to help the youths but lack of proper funds or enough facilities are the main stabling block like Community Life Line Programme (COLIP) which is CBO in Eastleigh. Land is very expensive RECOMMENDATIONS Need more time to convince and create awareness to the community about the intention and benefits of the project. Such research are very expensive to conduct, hence needs more financial support Pumwani social hall is one of the best sites to establish a youth development center. Because of the high demand and scarcity of spaces, early booking is required.
