Digital Protection Relays

Internal
What is the Protection?

It is continuous monitoring of the electrical status of power system Components and de-energize them when
they are subjected to serious disturbances.

What are the Protection Purposes?

- Contribute to protecting people against electrical hazards.

- Avoid damage to equipments.

- Limit thermal, dielectric and mechanical stress on equipment.

- Maintain stability and service continuity in the power system.

- Protect adjacent installation

Internal
-Two main objectives
> Contribute to the safety of people ● …while optimising continuity of
and equipment... service

- this means that:
> Fault current must be quickly cleared...

> Any protection chain consist of :
> Current Sensors (CTs )
> Protection Relay
> Circuit Breakers

3 – The circuit breaker trips and breaks the fault current

2 – The protection device analyzes the fault current and

Sepam transmits a tripping order

1 – The current sensor (CT) detects the fault current and

transmits the information to the protection device
