Statement of Purpose

Introduction
My name is Sukhbeer Singh, and I live in Sotha, a village located in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab. My
passport number is W2312143 and my date of birth is the 7th of December, 2003. I am deeply
attached to my parents, Mr Jagseer Singh and Mrs Paramjeet Kaur. I want to pursue a post-secondary
diploma in Tourism because I believe that this program will endow me with a set of skills that will
help me get closer to achieving my professional goals, which lie in the field of travel management. I
am applying to secure a study permit that will allow me to continue my further education in Canada
and then return to India to execute my learning.

Educational Background
I completed my matriculation at Kulwant Joshi Memorial Regional Convent School, Rupana,
Muktsar in 2020 and scored 60.2 percent. Thereon, I began pursuing humanities at the same
institution. I completed my senior secondary education in year 2022 and scored 72.4 percent. My
academic performance has improved significantly throughout the years and I intend to excel at St.
Lawrence College, Canada.

Professional Experience
In November 2022, I began working in the capacity of an Assistant Travel Counsellor at Acrossworld
Immigration, Malout. Until November 2023, my responsibilities entailed providing excellent
customer service to clients by responding to inquiries, resolving issues, and ensuring a positive overall
experience. I also assisted in booking flights, accommodations, transportation, and other travel
services for clients based on their preferences and requirements. I helped create travel itineraries,
including arranging tours, activities, and restaurant reservations according to client preferences. It fell
within my purview to research destinations, travel options, and relevant information, such as visa
requirements, travel advisories, and local attractions.

Why do I desire to pursue a diploma in Tourism?

Having worked at Acrossworld Immigration in the capacity of an Assistant Travel Counsellor for a
year, I gained exposure and experience in the travel industry. I have thoroughly enjoyed the work and
now, I wish to upgrade my designation to that of a Travel Manager. I am fully aware that to rise in
the ranks, I need to possess a formal education in the field of tourism. Earning a diploma in tourism
will open doors to more advanced and higher-paying roles within the tourism and hospitality industry.
It will serve as a stepping stone to positions with greater responsibility and potential for career growth.
I am also well informed of the fact that prestigious travel agencies in India recruit candidates who
possess an in-depth understanding of the tourism sector and hold skills specific to the tourism
industry. Pursuing a diploma in tourism will help me become more knowledgeable to confidently
assume a senior-level role in the tourism sector. Most importantly, pursuing a diploma in tourism will
help me develop cross-cultural skills, which are of the utmost importance as tourism involves working
with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Competency in the English Language

I took the language proficiency test (IELTS) on the 9th of September, 2023 and scored an overall
band score of 6.0. My individual module scoring is as follows: Listening: 6.0, Reading: 6.0, Writing:
6.0, and Speaking: 6.0.

In terms of language proficiency, I fulfil the eligibility criteria to apply under the Student Direct
Stream (SDS) category as I have attained an overall band score of 6.0.

necessary skill set to be able to provide excellent customer service, addressing the needs and
expectations of guests and clients. I shall develop strong verbal and written communication skills to

address problems that arise in the tourism and hospitality sector, whether related to guest satisfaction,
operations, or other areas. I shall develop an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and
the ability to interact respectfully with people from different backgrounds. I will also gain the skills
required to manage teams and oversee the daily operations of hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality
establishments.

Reasons for Finalising St. Lawrence College

I have researched well and discovered that St. Lawrence College is a public college located in Ontario,
Canada, with campuses in Kingston, Brockville, and Cornwall. The college offers a range of
certificate, diploma, and degree programs in various fields, including business, technology, health
sciences, community services, and arts and design. St. Lawrence College is known for its practical,
hands-on approach to learning, with a focus on experiential education that prepares students for the
workforce. The college has strong partnerships with local businesses and organisations, providing
students with opportunities for internships, co-op placements, and other experiential learning
opportunities. The college has a diverse student population, with over 6,000 full-time and 20,000
part-time students from Canada and around the world. It also offers a welcoming and supportive
environment for students, with a range of support services and resources available, including
academic advising, career services, and counselling.

Reasons for Choosing Canada

I took into consideration several factors before making up my mind to pursue my higher education in
Canada. Firstly, Canadian universities and colleges are known for their high-quality education and
rigorous academic standards. Secondly, a diploma from a Canadian institution is well-regarded
internationally and can open doors to career opportunities in one’s home country. Thirdly, Canada is
a multicultural and inclusive country, welcoming students from all over the world. This environment
shall provide me with a rich cultural experience and an opportunity to interact with people from
diverse backgrounds. Fourthly, Canada is known for its safety and quality of life. It consistently ranks
highly in global safety and quality of life indexes, making it a comfortable place for me as a student.
Finally, Canadian institutions offer various support services for international students, including
orientation programs, academic advising, language support, and resources, which will help me adapt
to a new environment.

Employment Prospects
Upon completion of my diploma program at St. Lawrence College, I will become eligible to assume
a wide range of roles including Travel Consultant, Tour Operator, Corporate Travel Planner, Travel
Sales Manager, and Event Planner. Out of all the positions that I will be eligible to adopt, I will take
on the position of Travel Manager at one of the prestigious firms in India such as MakeMyTrip,
Cleartrip, Yatra, and Cox & Kings. Upon adopting the aforementioned role, my responsibilities will
entail building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, including individuals, corporate
clients, and travel agencies. I will be responsible for identifying new business opportunities and
clients, developing sales strategies, and meeting sales targets. I will also be required to create travel
itineraries and packages for clients, which may include booking flights, accommodations,
transportation, tours, and activities. After gaining 5 years’ worth of experience, I will assume the
position of a Travel Director. Upon assuming a directorial-level position, I will be tasked with
developing and maintaining a comprehensive travel policy that outlines guidelines and procedures
for booking travel, expense management, travel safety, and compliance with company standards. It
will also fall upon me to create a strategic plan for the company's travel program, including goals,
objectives, and key performance indicators. My research has revealed that as a Travel Manager, I will
be able to earn INR 10,00,000 per annum (https://www.glassdoor.co.in/Salaries/travel-manager-
salary-SRCH_KO0,14.htm#:~:text=) and as a Director of Travel, I will be eligible to draw INR
74,00,000 as my yearly income (https://www.ambitionbox.com/profile/director-salary/travel-and-
tourism-industry).

Reasons to come back to India

I would like to share with the Visa Officer that I have no intention of staying in Canada upon
completion of my diploma in Tourism. According to a report released by EconomicTimes India, the
contribution of the travel and tourism industry to the Indian economy by the end of 2023 will be
worth INR 16.5 trillion and the forecast for the next ten years is worth almost INR 37 trillion
(https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/travel/contribution-of-travel-and-tourism-
sector-to-indias-economy-estimated-at-rs-16-5-trillion-for-2023-
wttc/articleshow/101191444.cms#). This showcases the potential of the tourism sector and
guarantees lucrative employment opportunities for professional who hold a formal education in the
field of tourism. Per another article, the total number of jobs in the field of tourism is anticipated to
reach nearly 39 million with approximately one in every 13 workers employed in the travel and
tourism industry (https://travel.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/associations/over-1-6-mn-
tourism-jobs-to-be-created-in-india-this-year-as-the-sector-rebounds-strongly-wttc/101217732).
More than 4,000 travel and tourism jobs are listed on LinkedIn and they are bound to rise. Thus, it is
a practical choice for me to return to India after the completion of my education in Canada. On a
personal level, I am deeply attached to my parents who have entered elderhood. I have every intention
of returning to India to be there for them and take care of them in their ageing years.

Financial Support
I have covered CAD 17,585 to reserve my seat at St. Lawrence College. An amount of CAD 10,050
has been paid towards the purchase of GIC. Furthermore, I am a member of a nuclear family, and my
family is financially secure. I have enough funds at my disposal to take care of my overhead expenses
in Canada without having to work.

Visa Conditions
I am well aware of the obligations that I am required to follow on a study permit and I promise to
follow them very sincerely. I understand that I must:
• Be enrolled at a designated learning institution.
• Show that I am actively pursuing my studies.
• Inform the government of Canada immediately if I change post-secondary schools.
• End my studies if I no longer meet the requirements of being a student.
• Leave Canada when my permit expires.

Conclusion
I hope you will find everything in its appropriate place. For all of the reasons stated above, I believe
that Canada is the best place for me to continue my education. I am hoping that you will consider my
passion for studying Tourism at St. Lawrence College. Please accept my sincere gratitude for the time
and attention you will devote to my application.

Sincerely,
Sukhbeer Singh
