STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already. -
J K Rowling. I have always believed in myself and knew from a young age that if I wanted to something,
all I had to do is work a little more. The above lines said by J K Rowling only inspires me to work more.

Right from my schooling till degree college, I have always aspired to work in the hospitality industry.
Every time we went out for dinner or a holiday, I would keenly watch the staff work. Hospitality
management and culinary was chosen out of pure passion for working in the industry. Although at that
point of time I did not know much about it, I always loved the idea of holidays and hotels and travel.

I hail from a family of professors and engineers. Hotel management was a new career path altogether and
there was no one to guide me. This made me believe that I needed to get into the right hotel management
college to ensure a sound future in the stream. I finally managed to get into the Institute of Hospitality and
Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai which is ranked second in India. My journey
through the three years at this college was in my opinion an experience of a lifetime. The courses at the
college not only focused on the whole hotel operations but also helped to develop the character of each
student through varied workshops. The well-rounded course introduced us to the four main operation
units of a hotel namely Culinary, Food and Beverage Service, Front office and Housekeeping
respectively.

Culinary involved study of not only the cutting and cooking techniques and styles or world cuisine but
also an important aspect of nutrition, food and wine pairing and costing. Under Food and Beverage
service one is introduced to fine hospitality service and etiquettes. In the initial year, training in service
and menu planning took place. We were also trained to handle restaurants in the campus. I was the
restaurant manager during the Onam (Harvest) festival held at the college which catered to around 1000
students. The front office involved learning more about guest relations, wherein you are required to
handle situations one may face at a hotel, reservation systems and finance. Housekeeping on the other
hand introduced one to the various techniques used in hotels to ensure that quality is maintained. As part
of the Bsc degree, we were also required to learn tourism from IGNOU and this is where I made up my
mind to pursue my desired field.

While college imparted the theoretical aspect as part of the course, I got the opportunity to do my
internship at the Westin Hotel. An internship at the hotel not only gives you an insight into the day to day
work of each department but also inculcates the professional attitude one must have at any professional
environment. It taught me how to speak to clients, I got a deep knowledge of how I should handle certain
situations, the industry suppliers and operation management, f&b cost controlling and many more
functions. Hence this created a ground base for all students to work in various hospitality sectors.

In my final year, my research project was on Coffee Shops in the city, I along with two of my group
members had to speak to three different brand of coffee shops where in we had to understand each of their
products, analyze preference amongst the clients and record their feedback based on various factors such
as quality, price, preference and overall feedback. I found the research very interesting and it gave me a
brief idea about market research. This particular project spiked my learning curve and I was reassured that
my real interest lies in the hotel management and hospitality sector.

After my graduation, I was selected to be part of Thomas Cook Leisure travel outbound operations. Here I
along with my team worked in the operation department for travel bookings and arrangement for the
clients especially for the Middle east section. Although I quit the company in 7 months and was looking
for another job, I had started a small business from home which catered appetizers for party orders. The
start of my own company taught me various skills such as purchasing, quality control, kitchen
management, time management and most importantly entrepreneurship skills.

After joining World Travel Studio, I got the opportunity to manage sales along with operation. Here my
time management skills not only improved, but my interpersonal skills also got bettered since I had to
tailor make itineraries after interacting with VIP clients. The experience with WTS was challenging since
I had to handle sales, visa processing and send quotes to clients simultaneously. At the same time, I was
also taking care of tour issues. This work profile enhanced my communication skills and gave me a
deeper insight into I also got an amazing opportunity to travel with the tourism board for Thailand and
Switzerland as part of a familiarization trip. I now work closely with most tourism boards (incl Canada
tourism) and prepare packages for the website. My seniors especially in World Travel Studio have stood
as an inspiration for me. I have firmly resolved to study further as I would like to see myself being a part
of a bigger organization taking up a role of a manager, handling a team and growing. After having gone
through various courses, I have decided that a Masters in Business Administration/Global Management
will meet my requirements since it broadly covers all topics that would hone my skills to the core
towards achieving perfection.

‘Desire to create is one of the deepest earnings of the human soul.’ And my hobbies of travelling,
exploring places and teaching invoked this creativity. Since an early age of 10, I have been learning to
play the keyboard and appeared for my Trinity college exams as well. After passing the 5 th grade, I used
to take classes for small children aged 5-10. I also took part in the church activities during the Christmas
season, where we visited orphanages and elderly people, spent quality time with them and brought smiles
on their faces. I would like to describe myself as an optimistic person with never ever give-up kind of
attitude and who fits affably in a team. I love accepting challenges and working on them whole-heartedly.
I am also a creative person who is willing to learn all the time.

I think that now the time has come to get back to the classroom and get a formal education to upgrade my
knowledge and skills. I am confident that I will bring rich experiences from my personal and professional
life to the classroom and the university.

I have short listed the Vancouver Island University, mainly because I believe the opportunity of learning
from your renowned faculty combined with world class research facilities, pleasant university ambience
and a balanced academic program will immensely boost my career in hospitality. I strongly believe that
interacting with an experienced faculty and student body will make me more confident and equip me with
the skills needed to become successful entrepreneur in the future. I look forward to pursue my masters
from your reputed university to direct my career in planned direction fulfilling my above-mentioned goal.
Saying this, I hope for a favorable reply from the admission committee at your university.
