Using energy

1. Why energy is important?

Because without energy we could not build, travel, cook, communicate or keep warm.

2. The energy we use comes from different energy sources, mention the energy sources?

a) Coal, oil and gas are fossil fuels.

*we burn them to release energy as heat; this heat can power vehicle engines.
b) Electricity.
*is a clean and efficient way, it is generated by burning fuels in power stations.
c) Wind and wave energy.
*can generate electricity.
d) Food.
*it provides us with energy we need for daily tasks.
e) Heat and light from the sun.
*make plants grow to provide our food, also use this energy to heat our homes, and produce
electricity with solar cells.

3. Putting energy to work

4. What is the ultimate energy source? The sun is the ultimate energy source.

5. Draw a flow chart to show some of the ways in which the sun provide us with the energy we
need.

Solar energy

1. What does solar energy mean?

It is energy from the sun.

2. Name the main forms of energy that come from the sun?

a) Light energy.
b) Heat energy.

3. Describe how solar energy is used?

a) Animals absorb heat from the sun to warm their bodies.

b) Solar panels on building provide hot water for washing and heating.
c) A solar cooker heats food.
d) Solar cells generate electricity from sunlight.
e) Fossil fuels store the solar energy trapped by plants millions of years ago.
f) Plants trap the energy of sunlight in their leaves, creating food for animals and
releasing oxygen into the air.

4. How does the sun create the wind?

Heat from the sun creates the wind as hot air rises and cooler air rushes in to take its place.

5. How do we can use the energy of the wind?

a) To sail boats.
b) Turn windmills to generate electricity.

6. How are waves created?

Winds blowing over the sea create waves.

7. Explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources?

a) Renewable energy: comes from things like the sun, wind and wave, and will never
run out.
b) Non-renewable energy: comes from things like coal, oil and gas (fossil fuels), and
will run out one day once we have used up the earth’s reserves of these fuels.
