Concept 2
Lesson 1
- The Sun is the main source of energy.
• Fuel is one of the most important resources of energy that humans depend on to
get energy, the fuel we use every day come from gasoline, coal and natural gas.
➢ Fuel☺
It is any substance that produces thermal energy when it is burned.
• We use fuels in many purposes such as:
- Warming our houses.
- Supply cars with energy to move. How?!
➢ Fuel is important to move cars, where the fuel is burned inside the car engine
producing thermal energy that is converted into kinetic energy which causes
the car to move.
What do you already know about fuels?
Uses of some different forms of fuel:-}
Fuel is used for several purposes, such as:-
Gasoline and
Coal and wood
natural gas
Energy
Light energy Chemical energy Thermal energy

❖ Write the scientific term of each of the following:-
1. It is the main source of most forms of energy on the Earth's surface. ( )
2. The form of energy that is produced as a result of burning wood and coal. ( )
3. It is any substance which produces thermal energy on burning. ( )

Lesson 2
We learned that when fuels burned, they produce thermal energy.
Types of fuel:
1) Biofuels 2) Fossil fuels
✓ The original source of energy in biofuel or fossil fuel is solar energy
1. Biofuels
- They are fuels made from living organisms that can be planted.
Examples:
Wood is the oldest fuel Charcoal is made from Some types of plants such
that is still used all around wood and it is an as grass, corn and wood
the world. important fuel. chips can be used to make
a liquid fuel.
• Biofuels are renewable fuels which means that they can be continually
renewed as plants grow, but they should be conserved, where:
- Using wood as fuel requires cutting down trees.
- Cutting down trees at a faster rate than they can grow leads to
"deforestation", which has negative effects on the environment, so we
should conserve using wood, so it will not run out.
2. Fossil fuels:
They are fuels formed from the remains of plants and animals that were buried and
decomposed over a long period of time.
Examples : coal - oil - natural gas - gasoline
- Millions of years ago, large areas of the Earth were covered in
swamps, with a lot of plants growing nearby.
When those plants died, their remains were decomposed and
covered by hundreds of meters of mud and rocks.
Due to the effect of the Earth's heat and pressure, those remains
were turned into coal.
- When the sea creatures died, their remains settled on the sea floor.
- Over millions of years, layers of sediments and rocks covered the remains of those
sea creatures. These layers pressed down causing extreme heat and pressure.
- As a result of extreme heat and pressure, those remains converted into oil.
►This table shows some differences between oil and water?!
oil water
Oilis a nonrenewable energy resource. • Water is a renewable energy resource.
Nonenewable resource Nenewable resource
It is a natural material that is used faster It is a natural material that can be replaced
. than it can be replaced soon after it is used.
Conservation of oil • • Conservation of water:
Oil is used at a rate faster than the Water may not be replaced as quickly as we
formation of new oil, so it should be need it, so people should use water carefully
conserved by many ways such as to conserve it by many ways such as:
- Reducing the use of private vehicles. - Avoid wasting or polluting water.
- Using of public means of transportation - Growing plants that do not need large
amounts of water for irrigation.

Lesson 3
How fossil fuels are formed??!
1. The death marine living organisms that have lived since ancient times.
2. These remains are buried under rocks and sediments.
3. Heat and high pressure affect on the remains of marine living organisms were
turned into oil or natural gas.
• Renewable resource (wind energy - hydroelectric energy).
• Nonrenewable resource (oil - natural gas).
Ways to conserve the energy
1) Turning off the light when you are not in the room
2) Unplugging electrical devices (appliances) when they are not used.
What if the power goes out while you're studying?
you can use simple ways to keep studying, like:
1.Using candles instead of the electric lamps.
2. Writing with a pen and paper instead of using a computer.
Conclusion:
The electrical energy is very important in our lives and we should conserve it.
Using fossil fuels to generate Electricity
❖ How fossil fuel is used to produce electricity?!
- To generate electricity, fossil fuel burned in electric power station (power plant) :
Dissolving some
rocks including
the rocks used
for building
• Increasing the amount of carbon dioxide gas in the air forms a layer in the
atmosphere that traps heat on Earth causing a slow rise in the Earth's
temperature, which is known as global warming.
