SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS SAT CLASS - 9

The equation of the form ax +by + c=0 where a , b , c ’are constants and ‘ x , y ’ are
unknowns is called a linear equation in two variables where a and b both are not equal to
zero.

To solve the linear equation in two variable we need two equations. They are called as
system of linear equations.

The solution of the equationsa 1 x +b1 y +c 1=0 , a2 x+ b2 y+ c 2=0 is

b 1 c 2−b2 c1 c1 a2−c2 a1
x= ∧ y= where a 1 b 2−a2 b1 ≠ 0.
a1 b2−a2 b1 a1 b2−a2 b1

By observing the above solution we can say that the solution is obtain only when
a 1 b 2−a2 b1 ≠ 0.

If the solution exists then we say that the system of equations is consistent
a1 a 2
The system of equations a 1 x +b1 y +c 1=0 , a2 x+ b2 y+ c 2=0 are consistent ⇔ ≠ in
b1 b2
this case we say that the equations have unique solution.
a1 b 1 c 1
The above equations have no solution ⇔ = ≠ .
a2 b 2 c 2

The above equations have solution and it is not unique i.e., they have infinite solutions
a1 b 1 c 1
⇔ = = .
a2 b 2 c 2
