 SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS
In this lesson, you will find first the solutions of systems of equations having two unknowns. The main objective
for the applications of Linear System or Linear equation is to solve various problems using two variables where one is
known and the other is unknown, also dependent on the first. Some of these applications of linear system
are Geometry and Money problems by using two variables, a Mixture problems and Distance-Rate-Time problems by
using two variables and Application of linear equation in business and economics.
 SOLUTIONS OF SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS
In mathematics, a system of linear equations (or linear system) is a collection of linear equation involving the
same set of variables. A System of Equations has two or more equations in one or more variables. A solution to a
system of equations is an ordered pair that satisfy all the equations in the system. In fact, there are only three
possible cases: No solutions, exactly one solution, infinitely many solutions and there are three ways to solve
systems of linear equations: by graphing, by substitution and by elimination.
 GRAPHICAL SOLUTIONS OF SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES
1) Inconsistent system:
 is defined as two or more equations that are impossible to solve based on using one set of values for
the variables.
 Example 1: Find the solution set of x+2 = 4 and x + 2 = 6 graphically.
x+2 = 4 - Equation 1
x+2 = 6 - Equation 2
Solve for x in Equation 1
x + 2 = 4, x = 4 – 2, x = 2
Solve for x in Equation 2
x + 2 = 6, x = 6 – 2, x = 4
 Two or more equations impossible to satisfy by any one set of values for the variables.
 Example 2: Find the solution set of x - y = 1 and x - y = 2 graphically.
Use any point of each line, , to solve for y .
P(x, y) P1 P2 P3 Equation 1: x–y = 1 Equation 1: x–y = 1
x 0 -1 2 0–y = 1 2–y = 1
y -1 -2 1 y = -1 -y = 1-2
P1(0, -1) P2(-1, -2) P3(2, 1) -y = -1 y=1

Use any point of each line, x - y = 2, to solve for y .

P(x, y) P1 P2 P3 Equation 2: x – y = 2 Equation 2: x–y = 2

and
Plot the points P1(0, -2), P2(-1, -1), P3(2, 0) in Equation 2

The graph of the two equations are two parallel lines. Therefore, the system is inconsistent and has
no solution.

THIS MATERIAL IS FOR EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY AND NOT FOR SALE. Page 2 of 14
 Has no solutions. Notice that the two lines are parallel and will never intersect.
 Example 3: Find the solution set of 3 x + 2y = 3 and 3x + 2y = -4 graphically.
Use any point of each line, 3 x + 2y = 3 , to solve for y .
P(x, y) P1 P2 P3 Equation 1: 3 x + 2y = 3 Equation 1: 3 x + 2y = 3
x 0 1 -1 3(1) + 2y = 3 3(-1) + 2y = 3
y 3/2 0 3 3 + 2y = 3 - 3 +2y = 3
P1(0, 3/2) P2(1, 0) P3(-1, 3) 2y = 3 – 3 2y = 3 + 3 2y = 6
2y = 0 y=o y = 6/2 y=3

Use any point of each line, 3x + 2y = -4, to solve for y .

P(x, y) P1 P2 P3 Equation 2: 3x + 2y = - 4 Equation 2: 3x + 2y = - 4

and
Plot the points P1(0, 3/2), P2(1, 0), P3(-1, 3) in Equation 2

You see that the graph of the two equations are two parallel lines and the lines do not intersect and
therefore, do not have any solution set. Therefore, the system is inconsistent and has no solution.
2) Consistent (Dependent system):
 Has many or infinite number of solutions. The lines are coincident. They are the same line , so
every coordinate pair on the line is a solution to both equations..
 Example 1: Find the solution set of x - y = -3 and 2x - 2y = -6 graphically.
Use any point of each line, x - y = -3 , to solve for y .
P(x, y) P1 P2 P3 Equation 1: x - y = -3 Equation 1: x - y = -3

x 0 1 -1 2(0) – 2y = - 6 2(1) – 2y = - 6
y 3 4 2 0 - 2y = - 6 2 - 2y = -6
P(0, 3) P(1, 4) P(- 1, 2) y = - 6/-2 - 2y = - 6 – 2 - 2y = - 8

and
Plot the points P1(0, 3), P2(1, 4), P3(-1, 2) in Equation 2

Since the two linear equations are equal, their graphs are one and the same, and the solution set is
infinite.

3) Consistent (Independent system):
 Has exactly one solution pair(x, y). The point where the two lines intersect is the only solution.
 Example 1: Find the graphical solution of 2 x - y = 2 and x + y = -2.
2x-y=2 - Equation 1
x + y = -2 - Equation 2
Use any point of each line, 2x – y = 2, to solve for y .

P(0, -2) P(1, - 3) P(4, - 6) y = -6

Plot the points P(0, -2), P(1, 0), P(4, 6) in Equation 1 and P(0, -2), P(1, 0), P(4, -6) in Equation 2.

o Graphical solution of 2 x – y = 2 and x + y = -2

2 x – y = 2 - Equation 1
x + y = -2 - Equation 2

(0, -2)

The graph of these equations, 2 x – y = 2 and x + y = -2 intersecting at point P(0, -2).

Therefore, the solution to the system is x = 0 and y = -2.
 Example 2: Find the graphical solution of x + 3y = 8 and 2x – 9 = y

Plot (2, 2), 5, 1) and (8, 0) Plot (1, -7), (3, -3) and (5, 1)
From their graphs, you can see that
the two lines x + 3y = 8 and 2x – 9 = y
Equation 1 intersect at point P(5, 1).
This point is called the solution set of
the systems of linear equations,
x + 3y = 8 and 2x – 9 = y in two
variables x and y.
Equation 2
Therefore, the solution to the system
is x = 5 and y = 1.

From their graphs, you can see that the
two lines 2x + 3y = - 16 and 5x – 10y = 30
intersect at point P(-2, -4).
This point is called the solution set of the
systems of linear equations, 2x + 3y = - 16
and 5x – 10y = 30 in two variables x and y.
Therefore, the solution to the system is
x = -2 and y = -4.

 ALGEBRAIC SOLUTIONS OF SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

Aside from being able to graph systems of linear equations in two variables, you can likewise solve them
algebraically. There are two (2) methods in solving systems of linear equations in two variables. These are the
method of elimination and the method of substitution.
1) SUBSTITUTION METHOD
This method requires working on one equation and solving for one variable in terms of the other
variable, the result of which is then substituted in the other equation.
 Example 1: Find the solution set of 3x + y = 1 and 2y = 2 – 16x by the method of substitution.
 Solution:
3x + y = 1 Equation 1
2y = 2 – 16x Equation 2
Here, you start choosing and working on one equation. You will work on equation (1) and solve for
y in terms of x.
3x + y = 1 Equation 1
y = 1 – 3x Equation 3, is derived from Equation 1
Substituting the value of y = 1 – 3x in Equation 2, you will have
2y = 2 – 16x Equation 2
2(1 – 3x ) = 2 – 16x Use distributive property to remove the parenthesis.
2 - 6x = 2 – 16x Combine like terms by placing all variables on the left
-6x + 16x = 2 - 2 and all constant term to the right of the equation.
10x = 0
 x=0
y = 1 – 3x In Equation 3, substitute the value of x in any of the three
equations, to solve for the value of y.
y = 1 – 3(0)
y =1–0
 y =1
Thus, the solution set of the systems of linear equations, 3x + y = 1 and 2y = 2 – 16x is the
ordered pair (0, 1).
To check you can substitute the value of x = 0 and y = 1 to any of the two (2) equations.
Check: Using Equation 1: 3x + y = 1 3(0) + 1 =1, 0 + 1 = 1, Hence: 1 = 1.
Using Equation 2: 2y = 2 – 16x 2(1) = 2 – 16(0), 2 = 2 – 0, Hence: 2 = 2

 Example 2: Find the solution set of 3x + 2y = 12 and 7x – 2y = 8 by substitution method.
 Solution:
3x + 2y = 12 Equation 1
7x – 2y = 8 Equation 2
Here, you choose any of the two equations and solve for one variable. Choose Equation 1
and solve for x.
3x + 2y = 12 Equation 1
3x = 12 – 2y Divide each side by 3 to eliminate the coefficient of x.

84 – 14y – 6y = 24 Combine like terms by placing all variables on the left and
- 20y = 24 - 84 all constant term to the right of the equation.
- 20y = - 60 Divide each side by - 20 to eliminate the coefficient of the
unknown variable y.
 y =3
3x + 2y = 12 Substitute the value of y in any of the two (2) equations,
3x + 2(3) = 12 to solve for the value of x. In Equation 1,
3x + 6 = 12
3x = 12 - 6
3x = 6 Divide each side by 3 to eliminate the coefficient of
the unknown variable x.
 x=2
Thus, the solution set of the systems of linear equations, 3x + 2y = 12 and 7x – 2y = 8 is the
ordered pair (2, 3).

To check you can substitute the value of x = 2 and y = 3 to any of the two (2) equations.
 Check: Using Equation 1: 3x + 2y = 12 Using Equation 2: 7x - 2y = 8
3(2) + 2(3) = 12 7(2) – 2(3) = 8
6 + 6 = 12 14 – 6 = 8
12 = 12 √ 8 =8 √

2) ELIMINATION METHOD
In this method of solving a system of linear equations, multiplication and addition or subtraction are used
to eliminate a variable from one equation. To do this, the coefficients of the variable that you want to eliminate
in the two equations must be additive inverses of each other. You will use some properties of algebra to
manipulate the system and transform it to an equivalent system where you could eliminate a variable.
Look at the coefficients of the variables and decide which variable can be easily eliminated first. By
inspection, you can eliminate the variable by adding or subtracting the two equations.

 Example 1: Solve the system 3 x + 2y = 3 and 3x + 2y = -4 by elimination method.

 Solution:
3x + 2y = 3 Equation 1
3x + 2y = -4 Equation 2
0 = 7 To eliminate y, subtract Equation 1 by Equation 2
( Remember to change the sign of the terms of
Equation 2)

Since 0 = 7 is never true, the system is inconsistent and has no solution.

THIS MATERIAL IS FOR EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY AND NOT FOR SALE. Page 6 of 14
 Example 2: Find the solution set of 2 x – y = 2 and x + y = - 2 by elimination.
 Solution:
2x–y = 2 Equation 1
x + y = -2 Equation 2
3x + 0 = 0 Adding Equation 1 and Equation 2
3x = 0 Divide each side by 3
x = 0/3
 x=0 Substitute the value of x in any of the two (2) equations,
to solve for the value of x. In Equation 1,
2x–y = 2 Equation 1
2(0) – y = 2
0 - y =2 Multiply – 1 to each side.
 y = -2
Thus, the solution set of the systems of linear equations, 2x - y = 2 and x + 2y = - 2 is the
ordered pair (0, - 2). Therefore, the solution to the system is x = 0 and y = -2.

 Example 3: Solve the system 5x + 2y = 2 and 2x - 3y = 16 by elimination.

 Solution:
(Notice that no variable will be eliminated if you add or subtract the two equations. So, you
need to transform the system to an equivalent system such that one of the variables would
have coefficients that are additive inverses of each other.)
5 x + 2y = 2 Equation 1
2x - 3y = 16 Equation 2
To eliminate y, multiply equation 1 by 3 and equation 2 by 2. Then add the resulting equations.
[ 5 x + 2y = 2 ] x 3 15 x + 6y = 6
[ 2x - 3y = 16 ] x 2 4x - 6y = 32
19x = 38
x = 38/19
 x = 2
Substitute the value of x to any of the two equations to get the value of y. Using equation 1,
you will have 5 x + 2y = 2 Equation 1
5(2) + 2y = 2
10 + 2y = 2
2y = 2 – 10 2y = - 8 y = - 8/2
 y =-4

 Note that you can also find the value of y first by eliminating x using the equivalent system and
come up with the same value as above.
To eliminate x, multiply equation 1 by 2 and equation 2 by - 5. Then add the resulting equations.
[ 5 x + 2y = 2 ] x 2 10 x + 4y = 4
[ 2x - 3y = 16 ] x - 5 - 10x + 15y = - 80
0 + 19y = - 76
y = - 76/19
 y = -4
Substitute the value of y to any of the two equations to get the value of x. Using equation 1,
you will have 5 x + 2y = 2 Equation 1
5x + 2(- 4) = 2
5x - 8 = 2
5x = 2 + 8 5x = 10 x = 10/2
 x=2

Thus, the solution set of the systems of linear equations, 5x + 2y = 2 and 2x - 3y = 16 is the
ordered pair (2, - 4). Therefore, the solution to the system is x = 2 and y = -4.

 WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO UNKNOWNS
In solving this verbal problems, you will follow the same steps that you learned in the previous course
materials. In other words, you have to analyze the problems, represent the equation and each quantity with a
different variable, then solve the system of equations and check if each answer is reasonable. Take note that in
the representation, two variables are involved, and subsequently, two equations have to be set up. The number
of equations to set up must be equal to the number of unknowns.
Before you will work on some verbal problems, you will go over some of these exercises. The following are
statements which can express as mathematical expressions.

1) The sum of two numbers is 8. x+y=8

2) One number exceeds the other by 20. y = x + 20
3) The difference of two numbers is 17. x – y = 17
4) One number is 10 less than the other. x = y - 10
5) The width of a rectangle is 2 inches shorter than its length. w=l-2
4) A number of five-peso coins and twenty-peso coins amount
5x + 20y = P 225.00
to P225.00.
5) The winner won 10 points while the second runner-up won
10x + 7y = 100
7 points, with a total of 100 points.
6) A certain amount is invested at 8% and another amount at
12% annually. Their total annual income from both 0.08x + 0.12y = 240,000
investments is P240,000.

 Example 1: The sum of two numbers is 70. One number is 4 less than the other. Find the numbers.
 Solution: The first thing to do is to represent the variables.
Let x = one number Representations
y = the other number
x + y = 70 Equation 1
x = y-4 Equation 2
x+y = 70 Equation 1
x-y =-4 from Equation 2
2x = 66 Divide each side by 2, to eliminate the coefficient of x.
x = 66/2
 x = 33 one number
To solve for y, substitute the value of x = 33, to any of the two equations. Using Equation 1, you will have
x + y = 70
33 + y = 70
y = 70 – 33
 y = 37 the other number
Hence, you have the solution set (33, 37) where 33 is one number and 37 is the other number. To check,
substitute x = 33 and y = 37 in two equations.
Equation 1: x + y = 70 Equation 2: x = y-4
33 + 37 = 70 33 = 37 – 4
70 = 70 √ 33 = 33 √

 Example 2: At a department store, a customer bought 5 shirts and 4 ties for P3,000 while another
customer bought 2 shirts and 6 ties for P2300. Find the price of one shirt and one tie.
 Solution:
Let x = price of a shirt
y = price of a tie
5x + 4y = 3000 Equation 1
2x + 6y = 2300 Equation 2
Eliminate the x-variable by multiplying Equation 1 by 2 and Equation 2 by -5, then add the two
equations. You will have
2 [5x + 4y] = 3000 (2) 10x + 8y = 6000
-5[2x + 6y] = 2300 (-5) -10x - 30y = - 11500
- 22y = - 5500 y = -5500/-22
 y = P250.00 price of a tie

THIS MATERIAL IS FOR EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY AND NOT FOR SALE. Page 8 of 14
Substitute y = 250 in Equation 2, 2x + 6 y = 2300
2x + 6(250) = 2300
2x + 1500 = 2300
2x = 2300 - 1500
2x = 800
x = 800/2
 x = P 400.00 price of a shirt
Hence, the price of a tie is P250 and the price of a shirt is P400. Checking (P400, P250) you will have
Equation 1: 5x + 4y = 3000 Equation 1: 2x + 6y = 2300
5(400) + 4(250) = 3000 2(400) + 6(250) = 2300
2000 + 1000 = 3000 800 + 1500 = 2300
3000 = 3000 √ 2300 = 2300 √

 Example 3: At a theater, a total of 1,250 tickets were sold in one day. The ticket price for adults is P50
and for children, P30. The total sales for that day was P50,000. How many of each kind of
tickets were sold?
 Solution:
Let x = the number of adult’s tickets sold
y = the number of children’s tickets sold
Since the total number of tickets sold was 1,250, you can form the following equation.
x + y = 1250 Equation 1
Adults’ ticket was sold at P50 each and children’s ticket at P30 each. The total sales was
P50,000. The equivalent equation is
50x + 30y = 50,000 Equation 2
Solving the system by Elimination, you multiply Equation 1 by - 50, then add the two equations and
you will have
x + y = 1250 - 50 [x + y] = 1250 ( - 50) - 50x - 50y = - 62,500
50x + 30y = 50,000 50x + 30y = 50,000
-20y = - 12,000
- y = - 12,000/-20
-

 y = 600 children’s tickets

To find the number of adults’s tickets sold, substitute the value of y = 600 in either of the two equations.
x + y = 1250
x + 600 = 1250
x = 1250 - 600
 x = 650 adult’s tickets
Hence, the number of adult’s tickets is 650 and children’s tickets is 600. You may check the obtained
values of x and y in the two equations to verify the result.
