5) Plot a second line so that the solution to both equations is located at (-1, -2)
The amount of times the lines intersect correspond to the number of solutions for the
system.
Example 1:
y 1 2x
4 x y 1
1) (Standard equation of the line: 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 ± 𝑏)
y 2x 1
y 4x 1
2) Identify the elements of the equation for each line. 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 ± 𝑏
𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1 𝑦 = 4𝑥 − 1
m=2/1 (rise 2/ run 1) m=4/1 (rise 4/ run 1)
b = 1 (0, 1) b = -1 (0, -1)
3) For the first equation of the line, find and plot the y-intercept (0, 1). Use the slope 2/1 (/) to
plot the next point (1, 3) and draw the line. Repeat the same process for the next equation and
draw the second line. The intersecting point is the value of the variables (1, 3).

2 2
m=-3/2 (rise 3/ run 2) m=5/2 (rise 5/ run 2)
b = 1 (0, -1) b = -9 (0, -9)
3) For the first equation of the line, find and plot the y-intercept (0, -1). Use the slope -3/2 (/) to plot
the next point (2, -4) and draw the line. Repeat the same process for the next equation and draw the second
line. The intersecting point is the value of the variables (2, -4).

The algebraic method that can be applied effectively to the widest variety of
simultaneous equations, including non-linear equations, is the substitution method.
To use this method, one of the equations must be chosen and solved in terms of the other
variable. Then, it is required to substitute this expression into the other equation to
produce an equation with only one variable, to be solved directly.
Example:
1. 𝑥 .
𝑥 − 2𝑦 = −9
𝑥 = −9 + 2𝑦
4. 𝑦

𝑥 − 2𝑦 = −9
𝑥 − 2(5) = −9
