Responsibilities : Meets with District Maintenance Superintendent to discuss work assignments, reports any problems, discusses possible solutions, and determines equipment and personnel needed to repair or maintain roads. Examines work sites in advance to prioritize work, manpower, equipment, and supplies needed to complete a job. Ensures that all equipment, tools, material and supplies such as shovels, rakes, signs, flags and cones have been assembled and are in proper working condition before departing for work sites. Determines how and what materials are to be used to repair road obstructions or unsafe conditions in roadways by taking into consideration the type of soil underneath and around the area to be repaired. Determines if the problem with the roadway is due to weather problems such as cracks, road sinking, and weak spots. Marks areas of roadway to be repaired with marking paint to notify the crew of areas to be worked. Calls the asphalt plant to determine the availability of surface material needed for the project and orders the quantity of asphalt needed for the day. Ensures workers are using safety equipment such as seat belts, back braces, safety glasses, gloves and asphalt aprons. Ensures operators have inspected all equipment and that it is in proper working condition to include checking fluids, gas and oil leaks. Contacts line locators by telephone before digging to locate gas, electrical, telephone, cable, and water lines underground. Directs flagmen to proper position and places designated signs on roads indicating a wet asphalt and men working. Inspects work in progress and completed work of a crew for any problems to ensure that each job is completed satisfactorily. Payment and retaining wall. Compacting and grading the road.
