St. Paddys riot sets Fleming aflame

alex Carmona News ediTor Fleming Drive cemented its infamous reputation late Saturday night when alcohol-fuelled St. Patricks Day revelry in the area escalated into a full-scale riot. The notorious Fanshawe enclave, home to 82 student homes, was awash in flames as up to 1,000 intoxicated rioters spent hours feeding numerous street and vehicle fires, and clashing violently with police. Last night, London experienced the worst case of civil disobedience that our community has ever been subjected to, Mayor Joe Fontana said in a press conference Sunday. This is an injury for the whole city of London. The incident began with a small bush and a couch being ignited around 10 p.m., and intensified quickly from there. The police deemed the situation on Fleming a case of illegal assembly by 11 p.m. Numerous police, clad in riotgear, emerged soon after, but were met with staunch resistance from party-goers, some of whom were chanting Fanshawe! They were literally attacked with full bottles of beer and liquor, bricks, wood planks, two-by-fours, debris, tires, rims and other various items, Brad Duncan, chief of the London Police Service, said at the press conference. In addition, members of the crowd used laser pointers aimed at our officers eyes to try to disrupt our response. The police quickly decided to establish a perimeter to contain the situation, rather than risk officers safety by sending them into the riot, where they would be massively outnumbered. Seventeen police vehicles were damaged over the course of the incident and a CTV news van was tipped and ignited. Its fuel tank exploded soon after. A propane tank was also thrown on the fire, though it did not explode. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt or killed, though there were some injuries. Estimates have placed the cost of the damage at around $100,000. The riot lost momentum around 4 a.m., at which point the police moved in to secure the area. The police made 11 arrests by the end of the night, and more have followed in the days since the riot. Seven of those arrested are current Fanshawe students. Those arrested have been charged with unlawful behaviour, assaulting police and resisting arrest. Howard Rundle, president of Fanshawe College, held a press conference Monday to respond to the situation on behalf of the college. He stressed many of the rioters were not Fanshawe students, and that those who were do not represent the student body of Fanshawe as a whole. Fanshawe College is the size of a city, with 17,000 students and over 130,000 alumni. We have graduated people who make a real difference in this community and around the world, he said. He did not deny, however, that Fanshawe students played a significant role in the nights events. The Fanshawe administration has issued eight interim suspensions against students who were arrested, and plan to expel those who are convicted. This was unacceptable. It will not be tolerated, it will not be ex-

cused and we will not have those people as students of this college, Rundle stated firmly. According the Veronica Barahona, president of the Fanshawe Student Union, social media played a large role in allowing the situation to get so out of hand. We did not anticipate the full impact of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter in

allowing people to arrive while the incident was still underway, she explained. Social media is still abuzz with news of the riot. It was sick, I was right next to [the CTV truck], I took a run for it when it exploded, one individual posted on Facebook. Then I came back.

Starbucks to break ground in UCC

Students have demanded coffee, and coffee they shall get. According to Andrew Forgione, University Students Council president, the university will be opening a new Starbucks in the University Community Centre as early as September 2012. Its the university bringing the Starbucks, so its on their timeline, Forgione said. The popular coffee shop will open up beside the student seating created this year in the atrium,

closely located to both the Tim Hortons and USC-run Spoke. As opposed to the current cafs that serve Starbucks coffee on campus, it will be fully operational, serving snacks and seasonal drinks. Why another coffee shop? Forgione claimed the university sent out a food and beverage survey which revealed a large demand from students for a Starbucks in the UCC. However, the appearance of a food outlet notable for its lines does pose some problems. Its definitely going to affect traffic flow, he said. The combination of Booster Juice, the Spoke and Tim Hortons could create some inconvenient congestion for students trying to make their way through the UCC. On the flip side, if youre

late for class, youll soon be able to get a cake pop or a caramel macchiato to soothe your nerves. Katie Roseman

Size (constancy) matters

Neuroscientists from Westerns Brain and Mind Institute recently made huge strides in understanding how our brain perceives objects as being the same size. Perception does not change regardless of distance, a phenomenon known as size constancy. This was the very first study in which viewing distance was monitored and manipulated. What we found was a part of the brain called the primary visual cortex, which is the first part of the brain, was actually modulated by perceived size and not by the retinal input of the light, Philippe Chouinard, post doctoral fellow at Westerns Brain and Mind Institute, said. Irene Sperandio, co-author of the study, explained size constancy is crucial to maintain, otherwise the world would be distorted and unpredictable. Chouinard expressed the importance of these findings, as they can help doctors better understand medical conditions such as Alice in Wonderland Syndrome, in which a disruption in size constancy recognition causes the world to appear to get oddly smaller or bigger. Other applications of this research could also aid in the development of devices for artificial vision as well as new software for object recognition. Alexandra McCann

ambitious goals for upcoming years VPs

Julian Uzielli News ediTor The University Students Council has elected the executive board for the 2012-13 academic year. The votes were held during the USCs annual general meeting on Sunday, attended by the incoming and outgoing USC councillors. Each of the five vice-presidents oversees a different portfolio of the USCs affairs, encompassing university affairs, campus issues, student events, finance and communications. The five vice-presidents and the president, who make up the executive board of the USC, all hold full-time, salaried positions and are typically held by recent graduates. Incoming vice-president university affairs Alysha Li said she hopes to engage students more in her portfolio, which involves lobbying for students interests to the university administration and various levels of government. One of my major themes throughout my whole platform and for next year is I really want to put the power back into students, she said. She cited her Purple Papers initiative as one way to begin. The new program would allow students to submit short lobby documents on any issue in the UA portfolio, which Li could then bring to the attention of the relevant government. I think it has a great potentiala lot of other schools do it as well, she said. Myuri Komaragiri, next years vice-president campus issues, said

weve got some strong policy experience, weve got some good cultural knowledge, and i think those are going to be some things that help us set a good direction for next year.

adam Fearnall,

she wanted to make awareness of the USCs support services a priority. The past four VP-CIs have done such a great job of building the momentum of the services internally, and I think, at least for the next four years, where we really need to be going is pushing them outwards, she said. Komaragiri explained she plans to work with the university senate to put information about services

into all course syllabi, putting the information directly in front of students. All students have course outlinesits the best way to reach them all, she said. Its about making the services relatable and getting services to where students are, rather than expecting them to always come to us. Erin Uberig was elected vicepresident student events, the position that coordinates Orientation Week and the sophing program, among other initiatives. She hoped to make her portfolio more inclusive after a year where some students felt left out of SE decisions. I want to create a more inclusive student events portfolio, whether it be in terms of accessibility or simply interest, she said. [SE] is, without a doubt, the portfolio that imprints itself in students memories of their experience at Western, and strengthens Westerns ability to be a host to the best student experience. The new vice-president finance, Tony Ayala, also wanted to increase student input within his portfolio. There will be a focus from me to get fresh feedback on the customer service students receive from our operations, as well as suggestions for improvements to our operations, he said. Our organization is student driven, and students have the ideas that will push us forward. Jeremy Santucci was elected vice-president communications, a new position on the USC. The job was created earlier this year when council decided to change the ex-

isting communications officer position, which was appointed by a committee, including the president, to a vice-president position elected by council. This means that Santucci will be breaking some new ground in his role. I will be expected to support the entire executive team in their initiatives, and not primarily the president, Santucci explained. Also, one of the things the executive put in place for next year was the addition of a public relations intern to aid the VP communications in the nitty-gritty media as-

pects of the position. I really want to work to reach those students who exist outside the USC bubble on a more consistent basis, so we can be the most effective council possible, he added. USC president-elect Adam Fearnall was optimistic for the coming year. Weve got some strong policy experience, weve got some good cultural knowledge, and I think those are going to be some things that help us set a good direction for next year, he said.

megan devlin GaZeTTe sTaFF On Saturday, Western celebrated a record breaking St. Patricks Day weather-wise, that is. Saturday marked the warmest St. Patricks Day in Londons history, with a high of 21.8 degrees Celsius. Theres a really big high pressure system thats over the eastern half of North America, and the jet stream way north, crossing over Hudsons Bay, James Voogt, associate professor in the department of geography, said. Its actually kind of cold out west, and thats reflecting that theyre on the north side of the jet stream. In contrast were way south of the jet stream. Voogt said the warm weather should last until the end of the week before temperatures return to normal, so students shouldnt get used to it. The jet stream moves around a lot. This isnt climate change, its weather, he said. He also explained warm spring weather can be a mixed blessing. Storms are caused by contrasting humidity and temperatures, such as the contrast between balmy Southern Ontario and the colder air up North. However, the weather was nothing but a boon for business owners on Richmond Row this St. Patricks Day. Our day was excellentpatios were full. Everybody seemed to be in great spirits, and overall it was probably the busiest day of the year for us, Ron Scarfone, general manager of Joe Kools, said. He also noted lineups began forming before noon. Jack Astors on Richmond Row was also completely full from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m, and bar manager Rich Pereira said the restaurant couldnt have gotten off better. It was busier just because there were more people on the streets. Everyone seemed to get active really early, and the weather kept people out on the streets walking around and doing their thing, Scarfone said. They would work their way into one of the establishments eventually. Richmond Street was very calm, and it looked like all the businesses thrived, Scarfone noted. He also expressed his appreciation for the police blockade of Richmond Row, starting at midnight, which he believed kept revelers calm. Community Campus Police Services concurred this years St. Patricks Day, at least around Westerns campus and downtown, was a calm one. Though warmer weather generally translates to more activity for police, Elgin Austen, director of Campus Police Services, noted more activity doesnt necessarily translate into more problems. The weather was great. There were definitely lots of parties and lots of green outfits. We only had half a dozen liquor charges and a few conflicts, but nothing serious, Austen said. Richmond row was obviously extremely busy, but really nothing out of sorts for Western students.

Fuel for fire on Fleming
Its officialLondon is the Vancouver of Ontario. Early Sunday morning, as St. Patricks Day was wrapping up, thousands of partiers on Fleming Drive took to the streets and began clashing with police. Things got way out of hand, to the point where a CTV news van was flipped over and set on fire, causing it to explode. Rioters also took the time to vandalize 17 police vehicles, and cause approximately $100,000 worth of damage. This incident made both national and international news, putting London and Fanshawe College on the map. With Western and Funshawe already having a party school reputation, this certainly wont help dispel these negative stereotypes. And with the permanent residents of London constantly at odds with the student population in the city, this riot will just be fuel for that fire. The authorities in the city are already reacting. Mayor Joe Fontana seems determined to do something about this mess, and Fanshawes president has already suspended eight students, and has vowed to expel any student convicted of riot-related charges. This threat of expulsion is an issue in itself. Rioters are being treated as representatives of their school, even in their private lives. And while its difficult to sympathize with these people, expelling them sets a precedent. If a student gets arrested for something away from campus, or even for protesting on campus, is it right for the school to expel them in the name of preserving their image? Post-secondary education is a privilege rather than a right. A provision in the student code of conduct was put in place a few years ago to allow Fanshawe to protect themselves because of incidents exactly like this. If the school wants to use this sort of method in extreme circumstances, its difficult to say they shouldnt. Maybe the problem is with the area itselfFleming is overly dense with student housing. The mix of student residences and permanent neighbours is tipped in favour of the students, to the point where there is no one left to make noise complaints, or to point out that setting a couch alight is abnormal. In this case, cracking down on students might be the only appropriate reaction. In the future, though, maybe the city should consider tackling the problem at its core. The Gazette Editorial Board

place a little longer. Those of you with two, three or more roommates have to consider the wants and needs of more people. Finding a place suitable to everyones tastes takes a little more time and consideration. That being said, there still isnt really a rush, I promise. Every year around this timeor earlierstudents start panicking about finding a place to live the following year, and most of us end up getting ripped out of four months of rent while youre home for the summer because you thought you had to sign a lease in May. Dont believe it. This is London, Ontario, home of one of the largest universities in the country, three affiliate colleges and Fanshaweits student central. If youve ever tried to find a decent place in Toronto, youll knowthis is a renters dream. A lot of landlords will try to pressure you into signing a lease very early, threatening that all the places will be scooped up soon and youll have to live in a bus shelter for the next year, but Im here to tell you its simply not true. In London, because of the abundance of students, there is a surplus of student rentals, and they never really fill up. My building manager told me that my Richmond Street building, literally a 10-minute walk to campus, was finally at capacity earlier this year. Translationthere were still places available for rent at a high-interest location until late fall. Westerns off-campus housing services posts over 5,000 rental listings every year, and thats only one source to find a place to live. Whatever youre looking for, and wherever you wish to reside, I guarantee you can find it in this city. Want an overpriced condo with en suite laundry, a pool and a gym? Go for it. Prefer a rundown shack where you and your three roommates share two bedrooms for peanuts a month? Theres a place for you. Sure, it doesnt hurt to start the hunt early. Talking with roommates about what you want can never be done early enough. But when it comes to actually signing a lease, just cool it a bit. Dont let a sketchy landlord or intimidating building manager manipulate you into signing a lease just because youre scared you wont find anything else. You will, honestly. And if you dont, you can always have my place. Issues still reside behind the wall

Re: Wall misleading (March 15, 2012) To the Editor: On March 15, Heinz Klatt wrote the editor of the Gazette calling the apartheid wall, built on concrete beach by the Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights club on March 9, misleading and false propaganda. This letter is to clarify some concerns I had. When a Palestinians home is demolished, and he lives as a refugee in his own country, his father is imprisoned and he himself has to go through humiliating checkpoints, he listens to Israeli drones fly over his head, watches his children burn with Israeli white phosphorus and wakes up to an apartheid wall every day, what kind of upbringing do you expect this Palestinian to have? Heinz Klatt is a psychology professor, so he should be able to predict what the psychological effects will be. As a Palestinian, I would love to live and prosper with Israel, but Israel has pushed some to the edge. With regards to the wall, a security fence should be on the borderline. The borderline between the West Bank and Israel is 320 kilometres long, but the

apartheid wall is 700 kilometres long. It rips through Palestinian towns and villages to take more land from the Palestinians. The Jewish-only side of the wall enjoys beautiful subsidized communities with Jewish-only roads, swimming pools and shopping malls, while the Palestinians on the other side of the wall are forced to live in slum-like refugee camps with minimal water, dirty roads, poverty and a brutal Israeli military occupation. There is no word that could describe the situation in the Holy land better, except for apartheid. Walid Abu Daia

Katie roseman coNTriBuTor The weather in London has been warm, but you might want to think twice before firing up the barbecue. A recent study from the Harvard School of Public Health found consumption of red meat increases the risk of chronic disease. The study concludes red meatprimarily processed varieties like hot dogs and deli meats are linked to a variety of detrimental health effects. The ingredients added in the processing of red meat have been strongly correlated to different kinds of cancer. The high amounts of saturated fats in these foods also have a negative impact on the cardiovascular system. The study found that even a single daily consumption of red meat was associated with a 10 to 20 per cent increased risk in mortality. Jennifer Broxterman, a registered dietician at NurtritionRx in London, suggests baking or broiling meat as an alternative. The processing of red meat [is what] causes carcinogens, especially in smoking and barbecuing, she explains. She suggests cutting the meat into smaller pieces to reduce the total amount of cooking time, or to put tinfoil under the meat to prevent smoke from touching it. Besides its ethical value, Broxterman says that eating organic beef is generally better for you, although

Determined to help people, Berardi says the philosophy behind his company and their approach is simple. We believe in something we call deep health. Deep health comes from a balanced diet of fresh whole foods, sufficient exercise combined with genuine rest, clean air and clean water, he says. And it comes from living with purpose and joy and using your life as an expression of these things. action flick predictable but pleasing

rebecca myers coNTriBuTor Directed by: Andrew Stanton Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe John Carter is an action-packed adventure co-written and directed by Andrew Stanton, based on the 1964 novel John Carter of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The plot is laid out clearly, the characters are inspiring, and in crisp IMAX 3D, the cinematography is nothing short of impressive. The adventure takes place mostly on the planet of Barsoom, or what we call the planet Mars. John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), a former Confederate soldier in Virginia with a chip on his shoulder, unknowingly transports himself to this distant planet, finding himself in the midst of a civil war between the regions of Barsoom. Although resistant at first, Carter begins to find himself won over by the noble and humorous Tharks, led by Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and beautiful princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), in their fight to stop the evil Sab Than (Dominic West), leader of the Zodongans, from taking over Barsoom with immensely powerful weapons. The backdrop of this adventure on Barsoom is breath-taking, vast and foreign, and in IMAX 3D it captivates the viewer that much more, putting one completely inside the adventure in this mysterious and fascinating new world. The magnificence of Barsoom and the enthralling cinematography causes a level of excitement and passion that translates to the audience and can lead one to embrace the grandeur and majesty of the setting and storyline. Though the plot is a tad predictable, the intensity of the action and the interjections of witty humor are enough to make a person forget the film is a Disney production. John Carter is a feel-good film with excellent graphic visuals and honorable characters that bring out the passionate, lively kid in the viewer, without feeling like a childrens film. Stantons John Carter is a film that provides mind-blowing action and is worth seeing.

which are from her 2011 album Blanc Mercredi. Two of these songs, Blanc Mercredi and Certitudes, contain French vocals and were likely included on the album to resonate with her already established fans. That is not to say, however, that new fans wouldnt enjoy these tracks. Certitudes has catchy instrumentals that will entice listeners regardless of whether they can understand the lyrics or not. The album includes six new English tracks, including Sailor Boy and The Sabres of Truth. The latter contains heartfelt vocals that will make listeners shiver due to the rawness of Caracols voice accompanied only by an acoustic guitar. It will only be a matter of time before Caracol begins to see success with her vintage-like album, Shiver. The album provides a bilingual listening experience that keeps its listeners in a warm embrace. Ryan Stevenson Seppl displays the same technical mastery of the keyboard and guitar, and his lightning fast guitar riffs and keyboard solos passably reflect the insane circus theme. Parviainen takes a bit of a back seat in Circus Black. She doesnt display as much of her vocal range, avoiding the soprano range that she has previously demonstrated in Clouds of a Northland Thunder. She takes lower notes, often overshadowed by choirs, or guest vocalists like Nils Nordling on I Share With You This Dream. The elephant in the room with Circus Black is the insane circus theme doesnt benefit the bands style. The choir influence would be absolutely incredible in the context of their old themes, but here it is a cheap archetype that is not insightful. Amberian Dawns previous work has visible thematic influences, and the blend of opera style metal with power metal drums, guitars and keyboards is a fresh musical style. Unfortunately, Circus Black doesnt develop this sound into anything compelling. Brent Holmes

The album marks her first predominately English record, though she has seen success with her French musical career for a few years now. It features 11 tracks, five of

Swedish opera metal band Amberian Dawn adopts a new thematic focus in Circus Black, breaking from their classic Swedish mythology themes and turning to a generic circus focus. Circus Black does a few things rightAmberian Dawn adds a choir into the songs Circus Black and Crimson Flower, which nicely complement Heidi Parviainens powerful voice. Tuomas

California Wives Tokyo So lets get this straightCalifornia Wives isnt really from California, but resides in Chicago? And instead of singing about synthetic body parts, they briefly mention distant cities in Japan? Even though all of that may seem confusing, there is nothing intricate about their mellow and organic sound. The four-piece band, founded in 2009, prides themselves on relaxed instrumentals and the humming of simplistic melodies. Tokyo, a single released a little over a year ago, brings these qualities into full throttle with a newwave sound straight out of a 1980s blockbuster film. Although most of the lyrics remain undecipherable, Jayson Kramers smooth vocals in the chorus are enough to ease listeners into a euphoric melancholywhich is still less confusing than their band name. Jesica Hurst Awolnation Sail I stumbled upon Sail by Awolnation while trying to compile a list of study music to soothe my ears as I frantically wrote my essay. With that in mind, I wouldnt classify this tune as soothing study music, which might explain why Im still not done my essay. Awolnation is classified as an American electronic rock band, and this song follows a similar suit. The tempo is slow, the bass is strong and the vocals have an alternative electronic twist. And yet, with all these sounds going on at once, the tune is toned down by its rhythmic and repetitive beat. Sail, the most recognizable song by the alternative band, was released in 2011. Its said to be a tribute to the classic rock song Come Sail Away by Styx. So Sail may not help you breeze through your essays or coast through your final exams, but its worth a listenI promise. The Elwins are riding a giant wave of success, one that most bands only dream of. They released their debut full-length album And I Thank You February 21, enlisting Canadian heavy weights Meligrove Band and The Bicycles to open their highly anticipated Toronto release show. The band has been a staple of the Toronto music scene for years, amassing a huge following while remaining independent. The national buzz theyve attracted from the media, including massive support from Exclaim, is a testament to their songwriting and not any

sort of label affiliation. The Elwins debut is creating a significant buzz, and after first listen to the album you can see why. It may be February, but And I Thank You is already the quintessential Canadian summer record. The 10-track album is certainly pop rock, yet the Elwins extract so much more from the genre. From the excellent opener Come on Out to the closing track Sittin Pretty, the album keeps you interested and dancing. After several listens, choosing a favourite song is nearly impossible. The production is impressive, a sure sign of big-name producer Bill Moriartys touch. This feels like a classic Canadian album, yet its still only weeks old. The impeccable songwriting and musicianship was expected of The Elwins, yet this release surpasses most expectations. The band has released a gem, proving that their music is truly worthy of the attention. Sure, they have some high profile Canadian indie rock friends, but The Elwins have certainly earned their place amongst them. Matthew Trocchi

Jason Sinukoff sPorTs ediTor They say that practice makes perfect, and even though the Western Mustangs badminton team didnt practice in their conventional way, they still took home the gold this past weekend at the Ontario University Athletics championships. This year, we didnt go to any exhibitions or go and play any provincial tournaments. That is usually how we do things, Rob Fowler, head coach of the badminton team, said. We really just practiced and scrimmaged with ourselves. We split the team up into two halves and just played against ourselves, and the winning team wouldnt have to do the suicides, he continued. The Mustangs came into the tournament as the favorites, having captured the coveted OUA title last year, and six times in the last nine years. In fact, the only other team besides Western to capture the gold in the past nine years is the Waterloo Warriors. Waterloo has been our biggest rival over the last couple of years, and they continue to be because they have a lot of great players over there. Our strategy, though, is to play our game and do the best we can to win all of our matches, Ross Golding, Mustangs player, said. We cant worry about how other teams do. If we play like we are capable of, we should be able to win. Things turned out a bit differently this year, as it was not the Warriors taking on the purple and

white in the finals, but instead the Toronto Varsity Blues. But it made no difference for coach Fowler, as he knows the depth of his team is too much for most teams to handle. This year it was actually U of T finishing in second, which came as a bit of a surprise. Waterloo has a couple of players that are extremely strong, but their team doesnt really have the overall depth that our

team does, Fowler said. It is this depth and experience that had Fowler and his players going for nothing less than gold at the OUAs. Expectations for us is always gold. We have a lot of provincial and national level junior players that have come to Western and are on the team, Fowler said. So for us, anything else other than gold

would be kind of disappointing. This year our team had high expectations wanting to go and capture another OUA title for Western, Martin Giuffre, one of the Mustangs players, added. We had great depth within our team this year and knew that if we all played well and supported each other that this would be attainable. The Mustangs now shift their

focus to the University-College National Championships in Mississauga next week. It was a good tournament for us, because I was able to see where some of the younger first and second-year players were at. But all of our focus goes to the UniversityCollege National Championships. Fowler said.

Not that spring training games matter, but the Jays are off to a hot start. Though organizational depth and maturation is to credit, it doesnt hurt that the reclamation project of Brett cecil is ahead of schedule. having lost 32 lbs. during the offseason, cecil has parlayed that into a solidified spot in the rotation. sporting three wins in his four appearances, cecil has pitched 10 innings and only allowed six hits and one earned run for an era of 0.90. coming into the spring with a light grip on the third spot in the rotation, cecil has taken the spot and ran with it, even without lighting up the radar guns. Taking his mind off of his pitch speed, cecil has been able to craft a new niche to go along with his new weight. with opening day just around the corner, it is this kind of production that will put the Jays in contention for the coveted second wildcard spot. a 13-4 spring training record is nice, but with fan excitement reaching new heights, spring training success isnt really going to cut it.
