usc elections postponed after website compromised

Kaleigh rogers multimedia director In a precedent-setting move, the University Students Council will hold a re-vote on their elections ballot following a hacking incident. Wednesday evening, around 5 p.m., USC executives informed the four presidential candidates the results for the previous two days voting had been deemed invalid after the voting website was hacked late Tuesday night. When the hack first occurred, Information Technology Services determined it to be superficial and that none of the over 10,000 votes had been affected. Once the hack was fixed, the USC decided to continue with the elections as usual. However, once administration were notified, a decision was made that the results had been compromised. Since two of the voting bullets were referenda concerning student fees, the Board of Governors and administration had the final say in releasing those results, according to Andrew Forgione, USC president. The university came to the table, and they were already going to cancel their Board of Governors and senator elections. When we came to the table we wanted to keep our results because we felt they werent compromised, Forgione said, but added it didnt seem right to release the presidential results when the other results had been deemed compromised. Its a decision that we werent happy to make. The USC has not released how the record number of votes were distributed, but Forgione explained if they stuck with the original vote, it is likely candidates would have balkedand with good reason. Any candidates who would have lost or contested the results would have had a case, he said. Candidates were invited to an elections committee meeting last night to decide how to proceed with a re-vote. USC presidential candidates and their teams, after weeks of campaigning, were unhappy with the events. They seemed shocked and exhausted after receiving the news. Im not happy that theyre redoing it, but at the same time, I think whoever would have won, there would have been an uproar about that win from other candidates saying it was compromised, candidate Logan Ross said, adding with a smile, people are joking would I do it again? Yeah, I am. Im doing it again. Claire McArthur, who was unable to attend in person, called in to the meeting to get the news. Im sure everyone put forth their best effort and Im not in their shoesI cant say if I could have handled anything differently. This was obviously a last resort, they didnt want to have to come to this, she said. After the meeting, Adam Fearnall met with two members of his campaign team outside of USC offices but seemed in good spirits. He said his supporters had run a good campaign and they were ready to do it again, if need be. The political climate will change and well see. However, one candidate was slightly more rattled by the news. Jon Silver said he felt the hack, the decisions made and the communication of these decisions was indicative of a lack of student-focus in the USC as a whole. Its like a slap in the face. You work so hard at somethingand Im not talking on behalf of myself, Im talking on behalf of every single person who put their lives into this. And not just on my team, but on other teams as well, he said after the meeting. Several member of Silvers team met with him while awaiting the elections committee meeting later that night. Silvers campaign manager Nicole Kopera was in near tears as she reacted to the decision. [USC communications officer Eliot Hong] assured me that the backup system that ITS used was not compromised and that no ballots had been added, no ballots had been deleted and nothing had been modified, she said. He assured me of that. The re-vote will likely take place the week after reading week. with files from Gloria Dickie and Cheryl Stone

Inside the hack that killed the vote

Gloria dickie news Features editor Following the hack made to the voteusc.ca website on Tuesday nightwhich resulted in the cancellation of the election results the Gazette received an anonymous email at 4 a.m. from a person who appeared to have specific knowledge about the hack. The writer displayed an intimate knowledge of the situation and offered his or her apologies to everybody that has been inconvenienced. In the email, the writer pushed for a re-vote, saying that while attempts were made to undo any permanent changes [...] it cannot be known whether or not they were successful. According to Geoff Pimlatt, senior manager of media and communications for the University Students Council, it appeared no votes were actually affected, but nonetheless, the votes were

deemed compromised. As of Wednesday afternoon, ITS was working through a forensic audit of their web server and database logs, Pimlatt said. While the writer of the email insisted the hack was not malicious in its intent, such acts can be persecuted under the Canadian Criminal Code. Additionally, there are several policies in place by the university regarding online vandalism and hacking of university servers. The emails author reasoned the motivation for the hack was to shed light on security holes. ITS needs to redo their election system before anything proceeds, the security flaw is systemic and they need to be aware of that, the email read. Software should always be tested thoroughly before being launched to a large public audience. No matter how noble the intentions may have been, a police investigation is now underway.

Right now part of the investigation is just to collect the information and ensure that we understand the circumstances, Elgin Austen, director of Campus Community Police Service, stated. Austen declined to comment on the headway being made, but USC president Andrew Forgione stated that during a meeting Wednesday afternoon, the ITS director was pulled out of the room due to progress in determining who was responsible for the hack. They had found out a couple areas where this individual may be with the IP address, Forgione revealed.

According to Forgione, if the hacker belonged to a campaign team, the candidate would be eliminated from the race. Additionally, Eliot Hong, communications officer for the USC, noted that if the hacker was a student, they are going to be held to the [university] code of conduct. Something of this nature, and of this magnitude, could very well lead to expulsion. The author concluded by stating, People should be aware that this isnt a minor flaw and a fair election is deserved. with files from Aaron Zaltzman

He has no history of heart problems, he added. Two professors, one from Kings and one from main campus, had been hired to take over teaching the remainder of McKerchers two courses. McKercher is survived by his wife Sue, three step-children, two brothers, a sister and seven nephews and nieces. We are shocked and very distressed, Bacheli said. It is a terrible loss for us. It happened so suddenly. McKerchers funeral will be held at St. James Westminster Anglican Church on Friday at 2 p.m. Julian Uzielli Cork, executive director of the London Training Centre, said. The Centre is one of eight Employment Ontario Organizations that play a role in providing employment services for Londoners, and whose role will increase with the closure of the employment resource centres. Consolidating employment services will make it easier for people to access councillors, government programs and workshops in one location, instead of getting information from many different places, Cork said. He said he realized the city of London is going through tough economic times, but is optimistic this change will pay off in the long run, and make employment services more effective overall. This is meant to streamline the system and make services consistent, so that if any Ontarian walks through a door that has Employment Ontario attached to it, they know they can get consistent and reliable service in any of the locations, Cork said. Kings mourns political science professor

William McKercher, a political science professor at Kings University College, passed away suddenly on Monday afternoon. McKercher was 67, and had been teaching at Kings for 28 years. McKercher had just parked his car in his usual spot at Kings and rolled down the window to have a cigarette when he suffered a heart attack. He was due to teach American Politics and Governance that afternoon, and after waiting for some time, his concerned students called security. He was found in his car, and pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Tozun Bacheli, chair of the political science department at Kings, had known McKercher for 48 years. He was one of our best teachers. He was much loved by his students, a methodical guy with high academic standards, Bacheli said.

world wars website launched

Two professors at Western are inviting students, researchers and the general public to take a closer look at Canadian life during the two World Wars. The Wartime Canada website is a new project displaying different artifacts from World War I and II in Canada, as well as educational lesson plans for teachers to download. People are welcome to upload their own materials to the growing interactive archive. What were looking for is for people with rare wartime ephemera. Pamphlet material, ration books, rare photo albumsthings that they dont know what to do with that otherwise might be discarded, Graham Broad, a professor at Kings University College in the department of history and the project co-director of WartimeCanada.ca, said. Currently, there are 500 items on the website and others are being digitized on a daily basis. The project is being funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council, a federal government agency that provides funding for academic pursuits. Its kind of like a one-stop shopping location for people interested in this type of rare wartime ephemera, Broad said. I think we have something in the neighbourhood of 5,000 items that will eventually be online. Hillete Warner

London may get louder

city looking to change noise bylaw
Victoria marroccoli gazette staFF London could be allowed to party louder and later with the possibility of changing noise bylaws. City council met on Monday night to discuss raising the noise limit from 90 decibels to 105 decibels, and pushing quiet hours later than 11 p.m. for special events. Dale Henderson, councillor for Ward 9, needs more convincing these changes are in the best interest of Londoners. I want to hear the rationale and Im not interested in 1 oclock personally [...] I think there will be some more people unhappy if we go longer or go louder. Henderson is interested in a more moderate change and said the current discussion within city council is about asking questions. Were trying to make the city function the best we can. According to the Galen Carol Audio website, 90 dB is comparable to a train whistle at a 166-metre distance, and 105 dB is like a chainsaw one metre away. According to Patrick Searle, vice-president of university affairs for the University Students Council, The USC encourages the city to adopt a more realistic noise bylaw that reflects the wants and needs of its population. He said that the USCs measurement of OWeeks loudest sounds hit about keep their events on the Western campus and keeps first year students on campus in a central location for this week. Searle emphasized it is important for London bylaws to accommodate everyone. Our students, just like many citizens in London, do not go to sleep at 11 p.m. A bylaw that respects both the reality of a population that enjoys entertainment well into the night, and the population that doesnt, would help London reach its potential. Nicole DAlessandro, vice-president of student events for the USC, said there is no way this potential bylaw change could negatively affect O-Week events. If this bylaw was to change, this would be good for the program [...] the better the entertainment we can offer on campus, the more students that stay for it, and we believe that its better to keep our first-years on campus than off campus.

88-92 dB, but the USCs measurement often varies from the London police readings. To avoid any bylaw violations, the USC purchases a special permit from the city each year in anticipation for O-Week noise. All the events held on campus during that week are an exception to the noise bylaw with this permit. This permit is different from what is used for other events across London. Londons accommodations for Westerns O-Week is an advantage to all parties, according to Searle, because it encourages the USC to

No votes for students on exchange

Cameron Smith gazette staFF Paul Craig is like any other student at Westernhe wants to exercise his democratic rights and vote in the University Students Council elections. The only problem is Craig is on full-year exchange in Singapore, disqualifying him from voting. I first tried to vote [Tuesday night], around midnight, which would have been 11 a.m. in London. I entered the username and email address that I use for Western Mail, but to no avail, Craig explained. At first, he thought this was merely a technical glitch, but it quickly became apparent this was not the case. It was after confirming I could still log on to the Student Centre and Student Services but not the voting form that I realized something was wrong, Craig said. Though away from school for the year, Craig felt strongly that as a student who was affiliated with, and would be attending Western next year, his vote should be counted the same as any other student. Look, its true that Im on exchange, but Im a Western student. I pay my tuition to Western and my courses have to be approved by Western, Craig said. Voting is empoweringits a foundational principle of democracy. Were going to be looking into our bylaws and talking to the university whether a student is still considered a full-time student at Western if theyre on exchange, Eliot Hong, communications officer for the USC, explained. is something were going to be following up with the university and with our own bylaws. According to Craig, though fullyear exchange students are not allowed to vote, students on half-year exchange are. He suspected this is because half-year students still have to pay a USC fee, while fullyear exchange students do not. Half-year exchange students have had no problems voting. Full-year exchange students are the ones who havent been able to vote, Craig said. What happens in this election is going to affect me personally, whether I paid the fees this year or not. The USC is currently looking into the reasons behind the voting prohibition of full-year exchange students, to see if the concerns are justified. No change in current policy is yet scheduled, despite the re-vote to take place after reading week. If I am barred from voting, this is a failure of democracy, Craig said. It would be indefensible.

Opinions
Voting hacked
At about 5 p.m. yesterday night, the University Students Council announced they were halting elections due to the voting website being comprised. Elections have been postponed until the week after reading week, and people are still trying to scramble to clean up the shit that was splattered throughout the room after it hit the fan. Precedents were set, as an event like this has never occurred before. Late Tuesday night, an as of yet unknown individual hacked into voteusc.ca and vandalized the aesthetics of the site, but it was thought that the actual ballots and votes remained untouched. This, however, was determined to be unacceptable. In a decision made with Western administration, it was decided the circumstances warranted dismissing any results accrued from the hacked website, and declaring a re-vote. Shit happens, as weve seen. The thing is, this specific type of shit was apparently completely unforeseeable. There appears to be no protocol in place dictating what actions should be taken in the event of a compromised election. As the USC scrambles to address this incident, we ourselves are scrambling to adjust to this situation. At this point, all we can ask is, was this preventable? And if it wasnt preventable, was it at least predictable? The fact that more than 10,000 student votes have to be chucked out the window as the USC figures out how to fix this situation speaks to a complete lack of preparation. And were the security holes in the website something ITS should have been aware of? To some extent though, we sympathize with the USC. Years from now, when there is a whole section in the legislature addressing website hackers and what to do if someone kills your entire election all of a sudden, people will have an idea of what to do thanks to the fustercluck that happened this year. But what will happen this year remains to be seen. Will the results be drastically affected by this hiatus? Will a candidate lose their reimbursement if their supporters now have lost interest? Many questions can be asked, and many questions will eventually be answered. When it comes down to it, this is just a whole lot of stress for every party involved. And for the students who have dedicated their past two weeks to these campaignswe feel for you. The Gazette Editorial Board

the tables have sterned
ryan Stern sPorts editor #omgrememberthattimeinhighschool #thatawkwardmomentwhenthatguydoesthatthing What is wrong? Is your spacebar broken? For average university students, social media plays a large role in our daily lives. However, if one is to use social media, they should use it properly. For clarification, a hashtag is not a punch line. Just because you have a short, succinct thought about your friends recent Facebook status does not mean you can put a pound symbol in front of it and remove the spaces. Dont get me wrong, the hashtag does have a practical useemphasis on the singular. Twitter, the centre of social media buzzwords, uses hashtags as hyperlinks to find trending topics. Its a useful tool for finding out who is talking about a specific topic or what is trending on any given day. Call it a first world problem, but using hashtags out of this domain drives me crazy. This tool does not encompass Facebook. This tool does not encompass YouTube. This tool is not a part of everyday conversation. If you would like to tell someone about a problem that arises because you are a member of the upper-middle class, it does not make sense to preface this with hashtag firstworldproblems. If your friend is making a funny face in their Facebook profile picture, is it #awkward or just plain awkward? Imagine your grandmothers reaction if you said #loveyou at the bottom of a letter sent via snail mail. Never mind the fact that saying a hashtag just doesnt sound rightbecause it doesntbut have you ever tried to read someone hashtagging a complete phrase? When reading the English language, I was taught to end words by adding a spacebut that protocol has obviously gone by the wayside when hashtagging. I cant tell you how many times I have tried to read a comment on Facebook such as #thatsincredible and wondered if the person was talking about a credible sin or exclaiming the incredulous nature of an event. Unless someone is willing to make a dictionary describing the different letter separations in hashtags, they shouldnt expect people to have to decipher a simple English phrase just because they felt a pound sign was necessary. Jack Laytonmay he rest in peace was able to use hashtags to his advantage, which is almost laughable. The fact that he was able to gain the approval of so many youth through the use of the phrase hashtag fail in a debate is genius on his part, but what does it say about the people who appreciated that statement? Much has been made of the deterioration of the English langage, but it is predicated on spacing between words. Would hashtagging even be considered English? So next time you want to write #loser on your friends lame status update about a weekend of studying, consider dropping the pound symbol. As a quick, simple rule of thumb, if it isnt on Twitter, drop the pound. As for the #win and #fail at the bottom of this page, that is a little awkwardsans hashtag.

the power of protests

Re: Fighting Against Fur (Feb 14, 2012) To the Editor: I found the editorial Fighting Against Fur commenting on Tuesdays protest one of the most ignorant statements Ive even seen in the Gazette. How dare you state that, Protests in general can be seen as ineffective, because people can easily turn a blind eye. Protests continue to advance humanity in terms of social justice around

the world. Whether referring to the Civil Rights movement or disputes over soph eligibility, theres no arguing that protests work. Furthermore, the comic accompanying the editorial is nothing short of ignorant propaganda. The protesters pictured on page three of yesterdays paperare some of the most compassionate individuals Ive ever known. The vast majority of students passing by were open to a quick conversation with us and many expressed an interest in preventing animal abuse. Whether

youre compassionate towards animals or enjoy your Canada Goose jacket, Tuesdays protest has people talking. This is Westernwe have 30,000 of the most passionate people in Canada right here on campus. Talk to people in the elevator. Walk to class without your iPod. Work together. Were all already amazing leaders and more people look up to us than we realize. Get up, stand up. How has your sound progressed since you last released music? I always try to make the music more interesting to me. Some of my more popular songs are kind of more rock or blues, but Im trying to move away from that and be a little more progressive. Im trying to take all of my different influences, like Bob Dylan, Timber Timbre and Radiohead, and mix that with Londons music community and my own personal experiences. Im also really into rhythm right now, so Im making a lot of music with a strong emphasis on that. and now Im going in a new direction. Im still making my own music and focusing primarily on that, Im doing my masters in popular music and culture at Western and Im still trying to figure out how to do these new things. looks like ill be sticking around a little while longer! #pujolstype toronto blue Jays reliever casey Janssen (@caseyJassen) tweeted about his recently signed multi year contract with the Jays.

Sports
amber Garratt managing editor What combines stamina, speed, quick reaction times and was rated by Forbes magazine as the healthiest sport? The answer is squash and Im not talking about the vegetable. The Mustangs squash teams are not often put into the spotlight, but they have been shining all on their own this season. Both the mens and womens teams took home Ontario University Athletic titles for the second consecutive year at the 2012 OUA squash championships at the University of Toronto. Our ultimate goal was to win the OUA title. Our players are especially motivated to perpetuate the winning streak of championships that enriches the proud tradition of Mustang squash, Jack Fairs, coach of the mens squash team, explained. No one wants to be a member of the losing team that ends the streak. The title recognizes a distinguished and enduring record of accomplishment. Both teams finished on top of their pools with 2-0 records before heading into the semi-finals. The mens team faced the McMaster Marauders in the semi-finals and the Queens Gaels in the finals, winning both matches 6-0. Similarly, the womens team went 6-0 in both the semi-final and final, defeating the Marauders and Waterloo Warriors, respectively. The mens squash team over the years has won 39 OUA championships, which is unmatched by any other team in Western athletics, Fairs said. The men did not lose a single match and the women only dropped one point in their pool with a 5-1 win over Waterloo. For the mens team, going up against Queens was supposed to be their biggest challenge. We faced Queens in the final again this year. They are solid, but we didnt have too much trouble, Rafik Bhaloo, a fifth-year player, said.

Fairs insisted the men were able to beat Queens because of their talent and depth. We were superior in applying pressure and where and when to use it. We played the game at our tempo and were superior in getting the ball into the back corners, Fairs said. Similarly, the womens team went into the championships with rivals. Wed traded titles with Queens for the last few years, so we knew they wanted it back. U of T always has strength in their depth, and Waterloo had a very strong top three that could do some damage. We knew that for all of these teams we had to use our strength in the fourth, fifth and sixth spots to take the pressure off of the first, second and third spots, Laura Savage, the womens head coach, explained. The mentality of the sport was an area of focus for the Mustangs this season.

We had the advantage of using Craig Hall [a kinesiology professor at Western] and his grad student, Danielle Tobin, to run sports psychology sessions for the team, which helped a lot with the mental side of the sport, Savage said. Fifth-year player Giselle Delgado believed dedication was the key to the womens success. The skill level between the girls was similar, so I think that was motivating to try harder to place in the top six. We trained hard on the court, and the mental aspect of the game too, which I think was also helpful. We were a lot calmer at tournaments because we felt prepared, Delgado said. If bringing home two OUA titles wasnt enough, the team received recognition in several categories, including OUA Male Rookie of the Year, Championship MVP OUA , Mens Coach of the Year, and took

four of the six womens OUA AllStar spots and all six of the mens OUA All-Star spots. It was an awesome end to the year having all six of our players named to the OUA All-Star team. They normally cap each team at two or three players, but this year we swept the awards, Bhaloo said. It was also great to see senior Ryan Herden winning his fourth OUA title and being named tournament MVP . One thing the Mustangs squash coaches, players and their opponents can all attest to is the team doesnt lack talent. To be a champion, the first requirement is talent, Fairs said. Talent is the source of the competitive advantage that we have enjoyed over our OUA opponents. The skills and habits of talent have to be refined for championship success.

Usman Zahid gazette staFF On Saturday, the Western Mustangs mens ice hockey team lost to the York Lions 2-1 at Thompson Arena. This was the final game of the regular season for the Mustangs who suffered only their third loss in regulation time, finishing the regular season with a record of 20-3-5. The Mustangs currently sit atop the West division of the Ontario University Athletics standings. The game started with York going on the power play early, however it was Western who scored first with Keaton Turkiewicz scoring at the 4:26 mark. The period progressed with physical play from both teams, however neither team was able to score again. The second period, like the first, started with an early Mustangs penalty just 17 seconds in. Not soon after, York took a too many men on the ice penalty, and on what can be described as a bad bounce for the Mustangs, York was able to score a

roxanne Van Gemert gazette staFF The Western Mustangs womens team was tied for the final playoff spot heading into Friday evenings game against the Windsor Lancers. With eighth place on the line for the Mustangs, they were able to pull out a crucial 4-2 win to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Lancers entered this contest just ahead of Western in sixth place. With both teams looking ahead to the post-season, this game was a must-win. A key moment in the game came just five minutes into the first period as Windsor goalie Karlyle Robinson had to leave the game due to injury and Julia Ouroumis took over. At the nine-minute mark, Marianne Filson was left unaccounted for in the Lancers crease and was able to score, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived though, as just under one minute later, Lancers forward Candice Chevalier bounced back to tie it up. The Mustangs came out strong in the second period, dominating offensively early on. Results came for the Mustangs just three minutes into the frame with Emilie Canhams third goal of the season. I feel really good about my goal tonight and Im glad it was the goahead for the second period. We just need to keep staying focused, positive and motivated out there so that we can keep getting results, Canham said. With two minutes remaining in the second period, Lancers forward Caitlin Connell blocked a shot and left the game injured. We have had so many things happen to us this year. We lost our goalie early on in this game, and then [Caitlin] in the second period. We needed to regroup, Jim Hunter, Windsor coach, said. The Lancers began the final period of play with a two-man advantage, but were unable to capitalize. At 16:45, Kendra Deller scored her sixth of the season for the Mustangs making the score 3-1, but at 14:06, Jane Gaffney from Windsor scored, closing the gap to one. With just under seven minutes left in the third period, Lindsay Gidomski scored a power-play goal, putting the Mustangs up by two

shorthanded goal at 3:42, tying the game up at 1-1. It happens, a freak bounce. Its just a bad, bad bounce, Josh Unice, Mustangs goalie, said of the York goal. Both teams took more penalties, however, neither was able to score again in the frame with the period closing out with the game tied at one. The third period started with yet another Mustangs penalty after three minutes of play and York wasted no time with the man advantage, scoring five seconds into the power play. We came out a little flat, but we got a lucky break and ran with it, Jim Wells, Yorks coach, said. I think the hockey gods were looking after us. Western is a great hockey team and we had to match their work ethic and we left it all on the ice. The win insured that York will have home ice advantage in their first playoff game. Western, after falling behind, would pick up their game and dominate the play for the rest of the period. The Mustangs got several chances towards the end, including a late power play with just over a minute left. York was able to hold off a relentless Mustang attack in the third to secure the 21 victory. It was a tough game, hard fought and our team played with good effort, Clarke Singer, Mustangs head coach, said. We played a physical team with a very good goaltender. The Mustangs will be looking forward to their first playoff game when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks tonight at Thompson Arena.

now. We are going to enjoy this for 24 hours, get on the bus Sunday morning, and hopefully secure sixth place overall, Chris Higgins, Western coach, said. The Mustangs will look to ride the momentum of a strong season into a deep post season run.
